No experience needed and all ages welcome!\n\n\nWe need volunteers to help us crank out massive panels of colors on our knitting machines for our yarn bomb project near Lardners Point Park! \nAll ages welcome and no experience needed. Walk in Event \nTacony LAB Class Enrollment and Attendance Policy \nThe Tacony LAB’s classes are unique in Philadelphia: we do not charge tuition or any sort of fees for any of our classes. \nOur classes are popular and often have wait-lists. If you enroll in a class\, please commit to attending it! \nHow to enroll in a Tacony LAB class: \n• You may enroll IN PERSON at the LAB beginning 3 weeks before a class first meets. SUMMARY:Managing Invasives: Section A
DESCRIPTION:Is your landscape being invaded by overly aggressive plants? Examine the problems caused by invasive plants and discover management strategies for controlling them. Learn how to identify common invasive weeds and how to distinguish them from similar-looking native species. See invasive-plant management techniques and restoration strategies in practice in Mt. Cuba’s natural lands. Outdoor learning may include walking over rolling terrain and mulched paths. These classes are rain or shine.\nThis program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center on Three Thursdays: 5/1 through 5/15.\nAbout the Instructors:\nEllen Lake\, PhD\, is the Director of Conservation and Research at Mt. Cuba Center. She taught environmental education and was the Education Director at the Brandywine and Red Clay Valley Associations. Ellen has a master’s degree in Entomology and Ph.D. in Entomology and Wildlife Ecology from the University of Delaware\, where she researched biological control of mile-a-minute weed and how to integrate weed management techniques to restore plant communities. Ellen has extensive experience researching insect-plant interactions\, including work for the USDA in the Greater Everglades ecosystem.\nNate Shampine\, CERP\, is Mt. Cuba Center’s Natural Lands Manager responsible for implementing land conservation practices through the creation and maintenance of healthy\, functional ecosystems. He is a graduate of SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry\, and he is also a Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner through the Society for Ecological Restoration.

SUMMARY:Richard's Rambles: Hike to Pink Hill Serpentine Barrens
DESCRIPTION:FOR ADULTS (18+) AND TEENS AGES 15-17\nPink Hill showcases the only surviving serpentine barren of the 10 that once existed in Delaware County. Join us as we explore this unique landscape and look for endangered and threatened species that call this harsh environment home. In early May we hope to see the pink serpentine phlox\, for which this barren was named\, along with other unusual species endemic to serpentine barrens.\nNote: Please meet your guide at the Visitor Center and be prepared to hike to the Serpentine Barrens\, a walk of about 30 minutes. There is one short\, steep staircase to enter the Barrens.\nThere’s more to discover in Tyler’s 650 acres. Join Dr. Richard Brenner for a walk through the various eco-communities at Tyler. From seasonal wonders\, living fossils\, meadows\, watery locations\, geological treasures\, conservation areas\, and unexpected wildlife\, Richard will expertly guide you to prime areas for an experience you will remember. Expertise from others will often be on hand for a more in-depth exploration. These rambles are for those who have a love for nature\, exploring\, and learning. While a description of each ramble is posted in advance\, we reserve the right to make last-minute changes\, including adjustments for weather and trail conditions. Bring your reusable water bottle and dress for the weather\, including sturdy shoes. Long pants and bug spray for tick prevention are recommended. \nUpon arrival\, please check in first at the Visitor Center\, where you’ll then meet your guide.\nPRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED \nMEMBERS (sign in for your discount!): FREE\nNON-MEMBERS: $18 per Adult; $10 per Teen (ages 15-17). Sewing machines\, pre-cut fabric\, thread and all other materials will be provided! We will be sewing on Singer Brilliance machines. \nAll levels are welcome! This is a beginner friendly workshop and you do not need any sewing experience.
