SUMMARY:Cup Design Deep Dive: Beginning Wheel-throwing
DESCRIPTION:This 8 week course will teach beginning wheel throwing and ceramic glazing skills.\n\n\nWhat makes a cup a cup? What makes a cup a “good” cup? Why do we use some cups in our cabinet more often than others? This 8 week course will teach beginning wheel throwing and ceramic glazing skills by exploring these questions. We will cover the entire process of making a wheel thrown ceramic cup\, including design ideation\, throwing\, trimming\, making handles\, and surface decoration. We will also view images of cup designs ancient to modern\, and explore our own mug collections. By producing small\, functional forms students will build confidence and proficiency in both craftspersonship and critical decision making. Students will leave this class with cups they enjoy using\, and the ability to explain why they enjoy them. The pottery skills covered in this course will be applicable to forms other than cups\, but by focusing on drinking vessels we will be able to build on new skills rapidly in a short period of time. This class is designed for complete beginners\, but intermediate potters will also find it helpful. With only five students in the class\, each potter will receive personal attention\, hands-on instruction\, and individualized critique. \nClasses will run 6-9pm on Tuesday Nights September 17 – Nov 12 (no class Nov 5th for extra drying time) \n——- \nPlease note that this workshop takes place in the Utility Works basement\, which is only accessible via stairs. The class requires participants to be able to sit and/or stand for at least three hours and use their hands for two hours. You mustbe able to lift 25lbs. There are two gender-neutral bathrooms available for students\, including one that is ADA accessible. If you have specific accessibility needs or questions\, please contact us in advance so we can discuss potential accommodations.

SUMMARY:Occupying the Narrative Space: Activism and Political Change
DESCRIPTION:Join the Andrea Mitchell Center for its first Graduate Student Workshop of the 2024-2025 academic year.\n\n\nJoin the Andrea Mitchell Center for its first Graduate Student Workshop of the 2024-2025 academic year\, featuring Celia Eckert (Harvard School of Government) and Kalahan Brown (Penn Annenberg). \nCelia Eckert: “Shifting Grounds: Protest Occupations as Worldmaking“ \nKalahan Brown: “Watermelon Fights: Narrative Wars in the US over the Palestine Conflict“ \nPapers will be sent directly to those who register. Hybrid event\, Zoom link will be sent out after registration. \nCelia Eckert is a Ph.D. candidate in Harvard’s Department of Government studying political theory and contemporary American politics. Her research examines the intersections between urban design\, institutional change\, democracy\, and protest. Drawing from critical theory\, sociology and urban studies\, her dissertation examines how urban spaces shape social paradigms and how participants in these spaces work within and against them to craft political change. Before coming to Harvard\, Celia was an English-language educator in France. She received her B.A. in Political Science with Honors from the University of Chicago\, where she was an Odyssey Scholar. At Harvard\, she worked as a curriculum lead at the Democratic Knowledge Project at the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics\, developing a civics education curriculum for 8th graders. During the 2022-2023 academic year\, Celia is a Media and Design Fellow at the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning. \nKallahan V. Brown is a first-year doctoral student at the Annenberg School of Communication and member of the Fontaine society. He recently graduated with a B.A. in psychology and minors in cognitive neuroscience and political science from Temple University. His time at Temple inspired him to investigate means of communication as an avenue for change\, especially when disseminating information to the public and presenting platforms favorably. Brown has lived in both Charlotte\, North Carolina and Philadelphia\, informing his ability to recognize the differences in how the same messaging can be perceived differently and reinforcing his passion for finding a better way to create these messages.

SUMMARY:Concrete
DESCRIPTION:Professor Anna Tsing launches the Wolf Humanities Center’s 2024-2025 Forum on Keywords with a talk exploring the “concreteness of concrete.”\n\n\nWolf Humanities Center • University of Pennsylvania \n2024–2025 FORUM ON KEYWORDS \nDR. S.T. LEE DISTINGUISHED LECTURE IN THE HUMANITIES \nConcrete\nConcrete is a material—and an adjective pointing to the physical existence of things. To be concrete is to have form in the material world. In this talk\, renowned anthropologist Anna Tsing considers the material form of concrete as a building material\, that is\, the concreteness of concrete. Concrete repels water\, and in the city of Sorong\, Indonesia\, where her current research has taken her\, it calls forth floods\, distributing mud. The concreteness of concrete is foundational to our current condition\, stuck in the infrastructural lock-in of this dangerous time\, the Anthropocene. \nCosponsored by Penn’s Department of Anthropology and EnviroLab. \nAnna Tsing teaches anthropology at the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, and at Aarhus University\, Denmark. Her most recent book (with Jennifer Deger\, Alder Keleman Saxena\, and Feifei Zhou) is Field Guide to the Patchy Anthropocene: The New Nature (Stanford University Press\, 2024). This same team curated the mammoth digital project Feral Atlas: The More-than-Human Anthropocene (www.feralatlas.org). Tsing is co-director of the Center for Southeast Asian Coastal Interactions (SEACoast) at UC Santa Cruz; she leads the center project\, “Fragmented Porosity\,” which considers changing histories\, livelihoods\, and ecologies of the land-water interface. \nMore information: https://wolfhumanities.upenn.edu/events/tsing \n––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. \nThe Wolf Humanities Center values inclusivity and we aim to create a welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds. SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: Finding the Cosmic Puzzle's Missing Pieces
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Finding the Cosmic Puzzle’s Missing Pieces\,” a look at how the fields of astronomy and subatomic physics are working in tandem to shed light on the darkest parts of the universe\, with Mark Trodden\, professor of physics\, co-director of the Center for Particle Cosmology\, and associate dean for the natural sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. \nFor most of the last century\, physicists pushed our understanding of the microscopic world down to ever-smaller sizes\, splitting the atom to reveal its inner workings and enable astonishing new discoveries\, including\, most recently\, the Higgs particle. \nAt the same time\, other scientists—astronomers—have continued to look to the skies for “the big picture” of the universe\, peering far beyond our galaxy and looking back to the beginning of time. They have discovered that the universe contains the mysterious entities of dark matter and dark energy\, and that the Big Bang may have arisen through cosmic inflation\, a dramatic expansion of space about which we’ve gained crucial new knowledge just in recent years. \nLearn how modern cosmology is weaving together these seemingly distinct strands of knowledge\, turning our telescopes into microscopes and allowing us to read the hitherto unknown dark side of the universe\, in a fascinating talk being given at the Black Squirrel Club in Philadelphia’s Fishtown. \nThe speaker\, theoretical physicist Mark Trodden\, conducts research that has contributed to a broad range of topics in particle physics\, gravity and cosmology. He focuses on some of the most pressing problems in fundamental physics found at the interfaces between these fields. His talk promises to be mind-blowing\, and it will make you see the universe in entirely new ways. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage: From a 2012 dark matter map by the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey.

SUMMARY:Habitat Advocate: Powerhouse Native Plants for Wildlife
DESCRIPTION:Uncover powerhouse native plants worthy of wildlife’s 5-star review!\n\n\nWhether they’re sustaining a bird’s stamina for winter migration\, providing ample nectar for hungry bees and butterflies\, or serving as a host plant for hundreds of juicy caterpillars to fuel the ecosystem food web\, these native plants pack a punch in their ecological services. \nCollaborate with habitat advocate peers on how to put the compiled field research trials into compassionate action\, right in your backyard! \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 10\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. Smaller patches of native habitats spread throughout urban landscapes are also essential to creating corridors of habitat – food and refuge – for wildlife. This is why we are offering our fall 2024 Habitat Advocate Certification program at Tec Centro in Lancaster City. \nThe cost of the Habitat Advocate classes covers instructor fees. If the cost of this class is prohibitive\, please reach out to Keith Williams\, VP of Engagement and Education\, at kwilliams@lancasterconservancy.org. \n \nYour Presenter\nElyse Jurgen\, owner of Waxwing EcoWorks Co.\, is a community collaborator working to rebuild ecological literacy and biodiversity through hands-on ecological gardening experiences in South Central PA. She is certified as a Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional and Ecological/Permaculture Designer\, along with earning an Ecological Gardening Certification from Mt. Cuba Center. She has a master’s degree in Environmental Education\, 7-12 Biology Teaching Certification\, and participated in Cornell University’s Civic Ecology program. \nElyse works alongside homeowners in a participatory approach to their gardening for wildlife needs\, infusing educational opportunities during the design\, installation\, and stewarding process. She invites homeowners to deeply engage with their land to maximize its potential in enhancing human well-being and supporting dwindling wildlife populations. \n \nAbout this Class\nNote\, you must have taken the prerequisite “Habitat Advocate: Building Biodiversity in our Community” prior to taking this course. Learn more about Habitat Advocate classes and certification here. \nAttendees ages 16 and over are invited but must be accompanied by an adult if younger than 18. \n \nRefund/Cancellation Policies\nRefund Policy: If you are unable to attend this event after purchasing a ticket\, refund requests must be made at least two weeks before the event. \nCancellation Policy: This event will be held rain or shine\, with cancellation for severe weather made at the time of the event. If the Conservancy reschedules the event\, attendees will be emailed and tickets will be automatically moved to the new date. If the Conservancy cancels the event\, attendees will be notified via email when possible and refunded. \n \nThank you to our host Tec Centro and partners Waxwing EcoWorks Co. and the Spanish American Civic Association (SACA)!\n \nPhoto: Elyse Jurgen
