SUMMARY:Make Your Own Watercolors
DESCRIPTION:Using soil and natural materials we will make our own watercolor paints!\n\n\nI was shocked when I learned that acrylic and oil paints are made out of plastics. I knew there had to be a way to create paints that were conducive to my health and belief systems. I mean\, people did it before there were plastics\, right? So ten years ago\, I embarked on a journey to learn everything I could about pigments and dyes. And\, I want to share it with you. \nJoin me for the Make Your Own Watercolors workshop\, where we will learn how to make every color in the rainbow using soil\, insect based\, and plant pigments. I will offer up my personal watercolor recipe\, and teach you about all the tools and tricks I have collected along my journey. You will make your own watercolors\, name them\, and share them with classmates to build a full set of 6 or more colors. \nEveryone will leave with a small set of watercolors in an upcycled tin container. We’ll even create a one of a kind color guide for understanding your colors. \nYour Make Your Own Watercolors Workshop Ticket Includes:-2.5 hours of dedicated creative time with no interruptions-Invitation to a Facebook Group where we will share meditations\, inspiration\, artwork and feedback-Your own unique color guide for understanding the colors in your set-A graphic printout with my own personal recipe for watercolors-A new paintbrush– A small upcycled tin with your own set of bespoke watercolors made with love \nAbout your Instructor Heidi Lowell: \nI am a multi-disciplinary artist based in Austin\, Texas. I use site specific soils and other plant materials from sites around Texas and the country to produce my own paint. Through my work\, I nudge the viewer into a more intimate relationship with place. I believe making and teaching art is a spiritual practice. \nI also come with 20 years of experience in education\, starting out as a public school art teacher for about a decade. I now regularly teach at retreats\, museums\, and festivals around the United States. \nAbout the Location:This event is held at The Craft Coven’s space in Cherry Street Pier. We are located in studio 14 on the second floor. Unfortunately there are no elevators to the second floor. You will need to go up a very large flight of steps to get to the second floor. The space is heated/cooled inside the pier and there are bathrooms located on site (on the first floor). There are often installations and events around the pier\, and the larger space is open from 12-8pm everyday.

All donations are non-refundable* \nFABSCRAP Philly is committed to keeping our volunteers\, community\, and team safe: \n\nAll visitors are encouraged to wear a mask in the FABSCRAP warehouse.\nVolunteer stations are comfortably spaced apart for individual use (unless you opt to share with a friend)\nCleaning and sanitizing of volunteer stations and frequently touched surfaces will take place between all volunteer sessions.\nHand sanitizer is available.\nWe ask that volunteers cancel their session and stay home if they are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms including fever\, cough\, and/or gastrointestinal issues (see additional info from the CDC). Additionally\, please cancel your session and stay home if you have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or had direct contact with an individual diagnosed with or suspected to have COVID-19 in the past 14 days.\n\nThank you for being part of our work and mission! When you sign up\, please consider donating to keep us operational as a sustainable resource – FABSCRAP is the only option available for the fashion industry to recycle and redistribute unused material\, and the most accessible way for consumers to find saved-from-landfill fabric\, trim\, leather\, and yarn. \nWant to get more involved? We are sending monthly invites to become a Reuse Volunteer to those who have volunteered 10 or more times! Reuse Volunteers help process materials in our Reuse bins after they leave the initial sorting table. It’s a great opportunity to understand the deconstruction of sample garments\, what types of items are donatable or mendable\, and how materials are processed for reuse or recyclability. We monitor our Eventbrite registrations closely. If you think you may have completed 10 sorting sessions and did not receive an invitation to sign up\, let us know at volunteer@fabscrap.org using the email you register for sessions with. \nPlease read below for additional information on volunteering\, including other changes at the FABSCRAP Philly warehouse due to COVID-19. \n— \nWhat to expect: \n\nWelcome: Intros and overview of FABSCRAP (10 minutes)\nTraining: Learn how FABSCRAP sorts fabric for recycling (15 minutes)\nSort: Sort through fabric samples and large pieces\, pulling out usable fabrics for reuse and removing hardware and paper from fabric swatches for recycling (~2.5 hours)\nShop for fabric! By registering for a session\, you are confirming that you have read\, understand\, and agree to the volunteer waiver.*** \n***Volunteer Waver Link Here: https://fabscrap.org/volunteerwaiver*** \nLATE POLICY: Our sorting time is very valuable and we aim to start right on the hour! For every 30 minutes a volunteer is late\, they will receive 1 less free pound of fabric. Thank you for understanding! We appreciate your time. \nTips for a successful volunteer session: \n\nDress comfortably and wear comfortable shoes as most volunteers sort while standing; we can provide chairs if you prefer to sit\nBring your own bag to carry home any material you shop for!\nWe play music but feel free to bring headphones\nFeel free to bring water or beverages with a cap/lid; there are also vending machines in the building\nAs the weather gets cooler\, windows will only be open for ventilation depending on the outside temperature\nPlease be sure to register for every session you plan to attend\, and if you are unable to attend – especially if you are showing symptoms of COVID-19\, have been diagnosed with COVID-19\, or had direct contact with an individual diagnosed with or suspected to have COVID-19 in the past 14 days – cancel your ticket so that others may sign up for your space\n\nAs a thank-you for completing a 3-hour volunteer session\, we’re happy to: \n\nGive you 5 pounds of fabric for FREE and a 30% volunteer discount on any additional material you’d like to purchase… OR\nWaive the fee for recycling personal sewing scraps\, up to 10 pounds… OR\nSign a community service form\n\n***FABSCRAP does not accept used garments or home linens for recycling.*** \nTHESE DIRECTIONS ARE IMPORTANT: \nThe FABSCRAP Philly warehouse is located in Unit B05A within BOK\, which is accessible by foot\, bike/scooter\, car\, subway\, and bus. \nSUBWAY: Broad Street Line to Snyder Station \nBUS: 45\, 47\, 47M\, 79 Lines \nBIKE: Approach BOK’s Pedestrian Entrance on 821 Dudley Street\, between 8th and 9th Street.
