SUMMARY:Public Meeting about Chemical Contamination
DESCRIPTION:In Summer 2024\, we learned of a potential chemical contamination originating at a privately owned site adjacent to Bartram’s Garden and the Bartram’s Mile Trail. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health and our independent test results\, most park users are at very low risk for exposure. The impacted site is a privately owned industrial property and is not an area of public access. \nThe property owner is required to hold a public meeting about the contamination. All are welcome. \nPlease note that the meeting will be held at Richard Allen Preparatory Charter School\, 2601 S. 58th Street. Parking is available on-site. The school is also accessible via the T5 (#36) trolley.

SUMMARY:Liberty\, Freedom\, and Social Justice Printmaking Workshop with Lori Raggio
DESCRIPTION:This event will be held as part of Mural Arts Philadelphia’s Printmaking by the People project.\n\n\nIn this workshop\, Liberty\, Freedom\, and Social Justice\, we will discuss the words “Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness” to create a dialogue of what Freedom and Social Justice mean in relation to the Declaration of Independence. \nWe will then take our ideas and express them visually through prints made using Gelli plate. This event will be led by Lori Raggio and held as part of Mural Arts Philadelphia’s Printmaking by the People project.  \nPrintmaking by the People is a city-wide project that will help commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration by asking Philadelphians the question\, if the Declaration were to be written today\, what rights would you want it to include? Come join us and have a chance for your work to serve as inspiration for an upcoming mural and to be shown in an exhibition at the Free Library!

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: Across the Atlantic: Sloopers and the First Organized Emigration from Norway to America
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of the ASHM Balcony exhibit Across the Atlantic: Sloopers and the First Organized Emigration from Norway to America. \nEnjoy traditional Norwegian recipes\, a special kransekake from MANDEL bakery\, and the opportunity to meet Susan Satkowski\, Honorary Consul General to Norway. \nAcross the Atlantic explores the trans-Atlantic journey of the first organized group of Norwegian immigrants to sail to the United States. Traveling aboard a small sloop called the Restauration\, the 1825 voyage took three months and challenged the strength and resolve of its passengers and crew from the very onset of the journey. The exhibit highlights the Sloopers’ experiences on the open sea and their eventual arrival in the United States. \nAcross the Atlantic: Sloopers and the First Organized Emigration from Norway is part of Crossings Bicentennial in North America. The exhibit is made possible with support from the Sons of Norway Foundation. Additional support for the exhibition opening is provided by NorCham Philadelphia\, IK Start\, and Sons of Norway Restauration Lodge 3-555. \nThe exhibition event is free to the public\, with light refreshments served. Please RSVP to help us plan. https://www.americanswedish.org/events/balcony-exhibit-opening-across-atlantic-sloopers-and-first-organized-emigration-norway

DESCRIPTION:Join Uncle Bobbie’s as we welcome activist\, writer and filmmaker\, Tourmaline for the release of her book\, Marsha.\n\n\n“Thank god the revolution has begun\, honey.” \nMarsha P. Johnson was a trailblazer\, a revolutionary and an absolute force of nature. Her impact is woven into the fabric of Uncle Bobbie’s so we are excited and honored to host an event dedicated to telling her story. \nJoin us as we welcome\, activist\, writer and filmaker Tourmaline for the release of Marsha: The Joy and Defiance of Marsha P. Johnson. \nTourmaline will be in conversation with poet\, visual artist and Operations Manager of Uncle Bobbie’s\, Van Brooks! \nThis will be an amazing night full of joy and community. \nAll copies of Marsha will be signed. \nSee you there! \n****** \nAbout the book: \nRumor has it that after Marsha P. Johnson threw the first brick in the 1969 Stonewall Uprising\, she picked up a shard of broken mirror to fix her makeup. Marsha\, a legendary Black transgender activist\, embodied both the beauty and the struggle of the early gay rights movement. Her work sparked the progress we see today\, yet there has never been a definitive record of her life. Until now. \nWritten with sparkling prose\, Tourmaline’s richly researched biography Marsha finally brings this iconic figure to life\, in full color. We vividly meet Marsha as both an activist and artist: She performed with RuPaul and with the internationally renowned drag troupe The Hot Peaches. She was a muse to countless artists from Andy Warhol to the band Earth\, Wind & Fire. And she continues to inspire people today. \nMarsha didn’t wait to be freed; she declared herself free and told the world to catch up. Her story promises to inspire readers to live as their most liberated\, unruly\, vibrant\, and whole selves. \n \nAbout the author: \nTourmaline is an award-winning artist\, filmmaker\, writer\, and activist whose work is dedicated to Black trans joy and freedom. She is a TIME 100 Most Influential Person in the World awardee and a Guggenheim Fellow. She has frequently appeared on ABC News\, as well as in the New York Times and Vogue. Her art is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Tate\, and the Getty Museum. She created the critically acclaimed film Happy Birthday\, Marsha!\, and she has directed Pride campaigns for Dove\, Marc Jacobs\, and Reebok. She previously worked with Queers for Economic Justice and the Sylvia Rivera Law Project. \n… \nDoors open at 6:00pm. \nBuy your book now and save on the General Admission fee! \nAll tickets are non-refundable. \nStreet parking available. Wheelchair accessible entrance also available through the rear parking lot. \nChildren older than 5-years old need a ticket for entry.

SUMMARY:Night Music presents Bach Family Salon Concert
DESCRIPTION:Night Music\, a period-instrument chamber ensemble\, will present “‘Ich bin ein Berliner’: Music from the Court of Frederick the Great” at Powel House\, 244 S. 3rd Street\, on Wednesday\, May 21. Pre-concert talk by musicologist Dr. Ellen Exner (The Juilliard School) at 6:30 PM\, concert at 7:00 PM. Featuring Karen Dekker\, violin\, Steven Zohn\, flute\, Heather Miller Lardin\, viola da gamba\, and John Walthausen\, harpsichord. \nThe finest among eighteenth-century composers wrote music not only for entertainment\, but also to educate and inspire those who paid their salaries. In “Ich bin ein Berliner\,” Night Music invites audiences to a multifaceted experience of musical life at the Berlin court of Frederick the Great of Prussia – including an opportunity to connect with the musicians over a mid-concert reception (with jelly donuts\, naturally!) \nAs an avid music lover and staunch supporter of the arts\, Frederick played the flute and composed. Night Music’s program highlights the king’s musical circle\, including his sister Anna Amalia\, his flute teacher and other court musicians\, and several members of the Bach family. Featured is the dramatic trio sonata from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Musical Offering\, the linchpin of an epic collection based on a fugue subject that Frederick himself presented to Bach. \nTickets required; “Pay what you can”: suggested donation $25 for General Admission\, $50 for Premium Seating. Purchase tickets here. \nAudiences describe Night Music’s concerts in the historic ballroom of Powel House as “a rejuvenating and delightful evening” and “a wonderful performance in the perfect setting.” \nNight Music\, now in its 10th season\, is a period-instrument chamber ensemble based in the greater Philadelphia area. Its repertoire centers on the Classical and early Romantic periods (roughly 1750–1850)\, highlighting excellent yet seldom-heard music by composers both familiar and obscure. The ensemble’s mission is to explore this repertoire with audiences in Philadelphia and beyond.
