SUMMARY:Self Care Sundays
DESCRIPTION:Black Lotus Holistic Health Collective presents Self Care Sundays with meditation and yoga classes.\n\n\nWelcome to Self Care Sundays! Join us on Sundays at 11:00 AM for some time dedicated to self-care and relaxation. This event will take place at Black Lotus HHC at 206 Rittenhousetown Lane\, where you can unwind and focus on yourself. \nTake part in yoga sessions\, meditation exercises\, and mindfulness activities to rejuvenate your mind and body. Treat yourself to healthy snacks and refreshments while connecting with like-minded individuals. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to prioritize your well-being and practice self-love. See you there! \n\n\n\n\nMore about Black Lotus HHC \n \nBlack Lotus Holistic Healing Collective is known for is a space designed for BIPOC healers/practitioners to be centered in the healing in order for them to heal those in the BIPOC community. Vibrational healing is the ancient art of healing with sound; it traces back to ancient Egypt & Tibet. Sound vibrations can heal the physical body at a cellular level by adjusting blockages and imbalances. These imbalances can cause the body to have a slower frequency vibration which may lead to dis-ease or illnesses. Natural healing sound frequencies can be transferred or introduced externally or directly into the body to create a more harmonious state. \nAt Black Lotus\, we combine the use of crystal chakra singing bowls\, gongs\, tuning forks\, and more to give a relaxing & transformative experience. We can balance chakras\, repair auras\, uplift the mood or help with grounding. Vibrational healing is a great tool for meditation\, alleviating stress\, and relaxing stiff or sore muscles. \nFor more visit: www.diasporaeducationalservices.org/black-lotus \nhttps://linktr.ee/blacklotushhc \n\n\n\nDIRECTIONS: \n \nBlack Lotus is not on Lincoln Drive despite the address…it is actually on Rittenhousetown Lane. SUMMARY:Twilight Tour at Mount Vernon Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Come tour the cemetery at NIGHT! Hear stories of those buried here. Watch a spiritual rite of purification. Listen to amazing opera LIVE!\n\n\nReady yourself for a walk on the (literal) dark side of Mount Vernon Cemetery (MVC). Closed to the public for almost two decades\, on May 31 we open its gates for ONE NIGHT ONLY to venture on a unique journey through MVC’s overgrown grounds and mysterious past. \nRacing against the setting sun\, this adults-only early-evening tour showcases the more macabre aspects of MVC’s history; tales of murder\, suicide\, and hoodoo. Who knows who or even what we’ll find? Spoiler alert: Be prepared for the uncanny as MVC is covered in\, as the New York Post declared: “creepy stuffed animals that inexplicably appear overnight.” \nTo kick things off the right way\, our night begins with a LIVE MUSICAL performance in front of our incomparable GARDEL MONUMENT by Logan Laudenslager (soprano) and Kyle Chastulik (baritone/guitarist)\, members of the Philly chapter of OPERA ON TAP! \nOnce darkness falls\, we’ll switch on our flashlights and stumble through the pitch black of the night – seriously\, we have no electricity\, it gets crazy dark – to the center of the 28 acre property. There\, we’ll participate in an epic on-site spiritual rite of purification\, conducted by members of SOUTH STREET CIRCLE\, Philadelphia’s own Neo-Pagan ritual group. \nAnd who knows what else is in store? \nMaybe a Civil War-era ghost story? \nCookies? \nAnything can happen! \nIt’s a night like no other! You bring the flashlights. We’ll bring the good times!! \n \nThis tour is sponsored and conducted by members of the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery. \nContent warning/Reminders: \n\nMVC’s Twilight Tour will include discussions of an adult nature that may be distressing to some visitors. Topics include tales of murder\, suicide\, death\, and infant mortality via disease.\nThis tour is for ADULTS ONLY. Anyone under the age of 18 will be turned away.\nPlease meet at MVC’s main gate. Located at the corner of Ridge and Lehigh Avenues.\nThe tour will be going offroad. Regardless of weather\, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable closed-toed shoes and long pants.\nIt is essential to arrive on time. Tour leaves at precisely 6:40. If you arrive late\, once the gate is closed and locked\, there is no coming back for you.\nMVC is in a court-appointed conservatorship. As such\, all visitors will need to sign an access waiver. Paperwork will be provided to you upon arrival.\nAll visitors are required to follow all rules and guidelines set forth by the cemetery’s conservators and by the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery. Failure to adhere to these rules will result in immediate expulsion from the grounds without refund\, and you will be banned from participating in future MVC public events.

SUMMARY:Ghost Signs of Old City
DESCRIPTION:See ghost signs and learn of the businesses behind them\, from lettered signs on building facades to those embedded in the sidewalks\n\n\n“Ghost Signs” are faded and often forgotten business and advertisement signs\, usually found on the front or sides of buildings. The effects of decades of weather\, neglect\, and cover-up attempts have diminished their eye-catching glow\, but they still provide a window into the past\, revealing generations of a building’s history and uncovering fascinating stories of our city. These signs can be found all over Philadelphia\, but a large concentration of them are in the Old City neighborhood. \nJoin Hidden City as we explore a range of ghost signs from hand-painted lettering on building facades (some even at eye level) to those embedded in the sidewalks. Businesses discussed will include nautical instruments\, department stores\, restaurant supply companies\, tanners\, printers\, brush makers\, and so many more! \nMeet at the northeast corner of 3rd and Chestnut Streets: 243 Chestnut St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19106. This tour requires significant walking on uneven brick and slate sidewalks of the Old City neighborhood; proper footwear is a must. \nTour guide Jordan Keiffer has been documenting Philadelphia’s ghost signs on the Instagram page @phillyghostsigns since 2019. His goal is to connect people to the forgotten stories of these faded signs through historic narratives and supplemental images. His work was featured in a special exhibition on ghost signs at the Neon Museum of Philadelphia in 2021. A native of Montgomery County\, PA\, Keiffer is a proud Temple University alum. He enjoys long runs and bike rides through the city that allow him to periodically check in on ghost signs. \nIf you are a Hidden City Member\, don’t forget to use your promo code for a member discount! \nQuestions\, concerns\, conundrums? SUMMARY:Habitat Advocate: Native Garden Design for Stormwater Management
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to transform your stormwater chaos into a creative conservation landscaping project!\n\n\nWith increasing storm intensity\, are you discovering more water on your property than you can manage? In this course\, you’ll learn how to calculate the rain runoff volume of impervious surfaces (roof\, driveway\, etc.) and how to transform your stormwater chaos into a creative conservation landscaping project. \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 10\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. Smaller patches of native habitats spread throughout urban landscapes are also essential to creating corridors of habitat – food and refuge – for wildlife. This is why we are offering our Habitat Advocate program at Tec Centro in Lancaster City. \nThe cost of the Habitat Advocate classes covers instructor fees. If the cost of this class is prohibitive\, please reach out to Keith Williams\, VP of Engagement and Education\, at kwilliams@lancasterconservancy.org. \n \nYour Presenter\nElyse Jurgen\, owner of Waxwing EcoWorks Co.\, is a community collaborator working to rebuild ecological literacy and biodiversity through hands-on ecological gardening experiences in South Central PA. She is certified as a Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional and Ecological/Permaculture Designer\, along with earning an Ecological Gardening Certification from Mt. Cuba Center. She has a master’s degree in Environmental Education\, 7-12 Biology Teaching Certification\, and participated in Cornell University’s Civic Ecology program. \nElyse works alongside homeowners in a participatory approach to their gardening for wildlife needs\, infusing educational opportunities during the design\, installation\, and stewarding process. She invites homeowners to deeply engage with their land to maximize its potential in enhancing human well-being and supporting dwindling wildlife populations. \n \nAbout this Class\nOpen for general admission\, no prerequisite necessary for this class! Attendees ages 16 and over are invited but must be accompanied by an adult if younger than 18. \nLearn more about Habitat Advocate classes and certification here. \n \nRefund/Cancellation Policies\nRefund Policy: If you are unable to attend this event after purchasing a ticket\, refund requests must be made at least two weeks before the event. \nCancellation Policy: This event will be held rain or shine\, with cancellation for severe weather made at the time of the event. If the Conservancy reschedules the event\, attendees will be emailed and tickets will be automatically moved to the new date. If the Conservancy cancels the event\, attendees will be notified via email when possible and refunded. \n \nThank you to our host Tec Centro and partners Waxwing EcoWorks Co. and the Spanish American Civic Association (SACA)!

SUMMARY:Street Movies! Undercover with Brewerytown-Sharswood Neighborhood Coalition
DESCRIPTION:Free community-centric screening series bringing independent short films and videos to vibrant public spaces throughout Philadelphia\n\n\nScribe and Brewerytown-Sharswood Neighborhood Coalition present Street Movies! Undercover\, a film screening and performance event on Friday\, May 30th. Join us at Celestial CDC (2800 W Thompson St) for a curated screening of short films about local history in Brewerytown-Sharswood\, and the power of community organizing. Hosted by BSNC’s Sunshine Unlimited team and featuring an opening dance performance by Shirladelphia Classics. \n \nAll Street Movies! Screenings are free\, open to the public\, and family-friendly. \n \nFilm Program: \n \nWalls and Doors: Inspirations From Our Elders (Directed by Jubilee School\, 2008\, 23 Minutes): Students of the Jubilee School have been collecting oral histories and tales of courage and resistance as told to them by their community elders. In Walls and Doors: Inspirations from Our Elders\, the elders are both witnesses and creators of under-told parts of history. Making this video has transmitted a legacy from one generation to the next and given the Jubilee youth a sense of the power of their voices and ability to create change. In this film\, students interview members of the Freedom Fighters\, who successfully desegregated Girard College in the 1960’s. \n \nAthletic Recreation Center – The Jewel of Brewerytown (Directed by Brewerytown Sharswood Community Civic Association\, 2007\, 9 Min): Baseball and Brewerytown have an illustrious history: the famed Oakland A’s baseball team originally hailed from this section of North Philadelphia. Known as the Philadelphia Athletics\, the team was based in the neighborhood in the late 1800s. When they departed out-of-state\, the Athletic Recreation Center was founded at the team’s former site. With a rich tradition of community-based sports and recreation\, the Athletic Recreation Center has been a central feature of the Brewerytown neighborhood for over a century. Boxing\, swimming\, women’s softball\, and basketball have thrived at the center along with its hallmark\, baseball. This portrait video features the reflections of community residents who utilize the center\, from young little-leaguers to senior-aged basketball players who still utilize the center after fifty years. As the Brewerytown section experiences a “growth spurt” of home building and small business development\, the Athletic Recreation Center promises to continue to be a “jewel” in this North Philadelphia neighborhood. \n \nChange the Name (Directed by Cai Thomas\, 2022\, 19 Minutes): An intimate portrayal of Black youth organizing on the west side of Chicago\, Change The Name follows a group of 5th graders from Village Leadership Academy as they embark on a campaign to rename Stephen A. Douglas Park after freedom fighters Anna Murray and Frederick Douglass. Over the course of the three-year grassroots campaign\, the students tackle bureaucratic Chicago Park District systems\, underestimations of their capacity to make real change\, as well as a pandemic and global uprising. \n \nGirard Avenue – A New Destination by West Girard Community Council (2005\, 10 Min): Girard Avenue at 27th Street is a vibrant neighborhood shopping district featuring a plethora of small\, locally-owned businesses. So it was no surprise that neighbors banded together to oppose the planned building of a McDonald’s fast food joint in 2002. The neighbors argued that they wanted to buy local\, and that what the community really needed was a supermarket.

SUMMARY:DonChristian Jones: The Politics of Mourning IV
DESCRIPTION:DonChristian Jones is a postdisciplinary artist and social sculptor whose practice blurs the boundaries between visual art\, music\, performance\, and social intervention. Working across media and modes\, his work engages architecture\, community\, and futurity—often emerging from spaces shaped by surveillance\, abandonment\, or resistance. \nRaised in Philadelphia and based in New York\, DonChristian’s early years painting inside Rikers Island and other carceral institutions ground his work in both aesthetic experimentation and civic urgency. His installations\, soundworks\, and performances have appeared at The Whitney Museum\, MoMA PS1\, The Shed\, New Museum\, and Brooklyn Museum\, among others. \nIn 2020\, he founded Public Assistants Inc.—a radical mutual aid network and community design studio that reimagines urban space as a site of liberation\, care\, and creative infrastructure.
