SUMMARY:From Kelpius to the Rod of Iron: Cults and New Religious Movements in Pennsylvania
DESCRIPTION:The state of Pennsylvania and the city of Philadelphia are home to a diverse array of churches and religious organizations. This program will outline the history of some of the most famous religious monuments of our region. We will begin in the 17th century with the figure of Johannes Kelpius\, a German Pietist who established an apocalyptic religious community in the Wissahickon Valley. We will then move to the 19th century to examine the Theosophical Society\, a new religion that merged East and West\, whose United Lodge is still located in Center City. We will conclude by discussing the Iron Rod Ministries\, an offshoot of the Korean American Unification Church\, which until recently was headquartered in Wayne County\, east of the city of Scranton. \nOri Tavor is a Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies and Director of the MA Program at the department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations\, the University of Pennsylvania. He studies the history of utopian thought\, new religion movements\, and the intersection between religion and the state. \nAttend this program in person in the Education\, Philosophy and Religion Department\, or view it live on Zoom by registering at https://freelibrary-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_cNQ2q3fvQ4CqWBN9IgeFXw#/registration

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: The Life of Barbie
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “The Life of Barbie\,” on a plastic icon and her cultural legacy\, with Emily Aguiló-Pérez\, an associate professor of English at West Chester University of Pennsylvania who has extensively researched Barbie as a scholar of childhood\, media\, and popular culture. \nFew toys have shaped culture quite like Barbie has. From her debut in 1959 to the billion-dollar success of the 2023 film bearing her name\, Barbie has been a mirror of society\, a lightning rod for controversy\, and a symbol of transformation. She often has found herself at the center of society’s evolving conversations about gender\, race\, consumerism\, and identity. \nGet to know Barbie like you never did before with the help of Emily Aguiló-Pérez\, the author of An American Icon in Puerto Rico: Barbie\, Girlhood\, and Colonialism at Play and the forthcoming books Barbie in the Media and Barbie and Social Media. \nDrawing from more than a decade of scholarly research on Barbie’s significance in global contexts\, Professor Aguiló-Pérez will discuss Barbie’s evolution from fashion model to feminist (and anti-feminist) flashpoint. While Barbie wasn’t originally designed as a feminist toy\, she would emerge as an emblem of female empowerment\, with the first astronaut Barbie\, produced in 1965\, exploring space before Neil Armstrong visited the Moon. At the same time\, she would continue to face criticism for reinforcing restrictive beauty norms\, with her measurements remaining unrealistic even in the “body diverse” versions of the doll—curvy\, petite and tall. \nWe’ll explore Barbie’s shifting cultural impact—her role in shaping beauty standards\, gender expectations\, and consumer culture. You’ll learn about Barbie’s global influence and how she continues to spark conversations about identity\, inclusivity\, and play. \nWhether you loved Barbie\, loathed her\, or rediscovered her through Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster Barbie movie\, you’ll find this talk to be a fascinating journey through the life of the world’s most famous doll\, and you’ll learn a lot about what she reveals about us. SUMMARY:Solutionary Living Series: Earth Day Celebration with Judy Wicks & Journeywork
DESCRIPTION:This is a free event. Please sign up so we can gauge our crowd.\nDonations are graciously accepted so we can continue offering programs like this to the community. \n10% off  Taqueria Cresta with your Fallser Club ticket!!\n  \nLive Music by Jeff Alexander\nFrom flower pots to meadows\, we will discuss how you can add essential pollinators to your world. \nJudy Wicks will talk about her personal commitment to sustainable living and why she turned her yard into a meadow.\nBackyard Biome Design will give a presentation about their work creating Judy’s meadow and other important sustainable land projects. \nPaige Menton from Journey Works will explain her community outreach method to get you started on your path to pollinators. \nLizaette Apy will share her experience of keeping bees in her small Germantown backyard.\n  \nPlants for sale by John Janick with Good Host Plants and Margaret Kramaric with 2 Hounds Flower Garden\n \nNo Mow Solutions for Your Yard\nThe Fallser Club and Solutionary Coaching present the first event in our Solutionary Living Series. \nA Solutionary ( coined by Zoe Weil) is someone who makes decisions and life choices by considering what would do the most good and the least harm for themselves\, other people\, animals\, and the environment. \n  \n \nYou wake up on a beautiful spring weekend to the sound of birds\, and then\, overpowering the robins and sparrows\, is the endless droning of lawnmowers and weed whackers. Why do we have lawns? They were at first a symbol of wealth and only became commonplace after the Industrial Revolution. But lawns are an invasive species!  They require large amounts of water consumption and chemicals to keep pristine and green\, killing off the beneficial insects (bees!!)\, and endless mowing contributes to unnecessary carbon emissions. \n \nJudy Wicks and Paige Menton will offer you alternatives that are easier to care for and better for the environment. Native plants attract beneficial insects and other pollinators and are drought-tolerant. \nOur lives depend on our little pollinator friends. There is no us without them. Come enjoy Earth Day with friends\, listen to live music\, and hear about alternatives to traditional lawns. Learn how to turn your yard into a meadow\, add a few pollinator garden beds to your yard\, or add some native pots to your stoop. No matter the size of your property\, your budget\, or your gardening expertise\, you can make whatever changes work for you. We will have native plants for sale.  \n \nJudy Wicks\n \nJudy Wicks grew up on the outskirts of Ingomar\, Pennsylvania\, where she developed a love for nature and an appreciation for the role of small businesses in community life. After earning a BA in English in 1969\, she spent a year as a VISTA volunteer in Chefornak\, Alaska\, where she experienced a culture rooted in sharing and cooperation. This insight deepened during the 1990s when she worked with Zapatista revolutionaries in Chiapas\, Mexico\, to establish a fair-trade coffee initiative. Her work with small farmers in Chiapas and Pennsylvania helped shape her vision of a global economy based on self-reliant\, sustainable local economies connected through fair trade relationships. \nIn pursuit of this vision\, Judy founded the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia in 2001 and co-founded the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE)\, now Common Future. She is best known as the founder of Philadelphia’s landmark White Dog Cafe\, a pioneer in the farm-to-table movement\, which she ran for 26 years. Under her leadership\, White Dog gained national recognition for its commitment to local food sourcing\, sustainability\, and community engagement. The restaurant set industry standards by purchasing only humanely raised meats\, sustainably harvested seafood\, and fair-trade products while also implementing eco-friendly practices like composting\, solar heating\, and 100% renewable energy use. \nBeyond the restaurant industry\, Judy launched initiatives to support sustainable local economies. She founded Fair Food Philly to connect local family farms with urban markets and operated Black Cat\, a fair-trade gift shop. In 2015\, she established the Circle of Aunts & Uncles\, a microloan fund providing low-interest loans to entrepreneurs lacking traditional startup capital. Responding to the climate crisis\, she founded All Together Now Pennsylvania in 2019 to build resilient\, just\, and regenerative regional economies. After retiring from organizational leadership in 2023\, she passed the torch to her successors\, who rebranded the initiative as PA Fibershed to focus on sustainable regional textiles. \nCurrently\, Judy and her daughter\, Grace\, are creating a sustainable\, solar-powered homestead\, transforming a two-acre lawn into a thriving meadow\, orchard\, and vegetable garden. The homestead will serve as an educational and community gathering space. Throughout her career\, Judy has received numerous accolades\, including the James Beard Foundation Humanitarian of the Year Award and recognition from Oprah Magazine\, Inc.\, and Conde Nast Traveler. Her book Good Morning Beautiful Business won the Nautilus Book Award for Business Leadership and has been translated into Chinese and Korean. \n  \n\nAbout journeywork\n\n\nJourneywork collaborates with neighborhoods\, schools\, and congregations to give people the tools to enhance the ecological value of their landscapes. They grow and source plants\, provide design guidance\, and engage volunteers to help people improve the habitats they steward. They foster community dialogue\, education\, skill-building & sharing through workshops\, consultations\, and client work. Journeywork meets people where they are and seeks to revitalize the land\, one lawn at a time.  Their mission is to restore the land together\, joyfully.  \n\nPaige Menton\n \nPaige has been growing flowers and food for over twenty years. She took David Attenborough’s A Life on Our Planet as a call to action and founded Journeywork to offer people hopeful\, energizing ways to respond to climate change together. She has a permaculture design certification\, has taught gardening to children for several years\, and is the land manager at Gwynedd Friends Meeting. She is a former elementary school teacher and has a master’s in environmental education. She grew up in the Cahaba River watershed\, now lives near the headwaters of the Wissahickon\, and enjoys birding in both of those places and everywhere else. \n  \nBackyard Biome Design\nAt Backyard Biome Design\, we specialize in native landscape design and installation\, offering sustainable\, eco-friendly solutions for traditional landscapes. Our designs focus on enhancing local plant communities\, providing habitat and food for pollinators and wildlife. Using resilient native plants\, we create low-maintenance\, seasonally blooming gardens that thrive in harmony with the environment\, contributing meaningful ecological impact\, no matter the size of the space.\n\n \nJulie Britton\n \nJulie’s love for nature began in the rich forests of North Jersey\, which inspired her to earn a degree in Evolutionary Anthropology from Rutgers University. Her academic journey also led her to Kenya\, where she deepened her understanding of conservation and the natural world. Over the past 10+ years in Philadelphia\, Julie has continued to expand her expertise by studying horticulture and ecology at prestigious institutions like Longwood Gardens and Mt. Cuba. Currently she is working towards her Pennsylvania Master Naturalist certification. As a horticulturist\, she combines her knowledge of ecosystems\, sustainability\, and design to create beautiful landscapes that foster a healthier\, more balanced environment.\n\n \nMiles Christenson\n \nWith a diverse background in the arts\, Miles perceives nature not just as a landscape\, but as a vibrant palette from which to craft beautiful and diverse gardens that endure over time. His many years of field experience has led him to create innovative and sustainable landscape management solutions to offer quality service. The deep love and connection to nature inspires his designs and keeps his hands dirty in the field.\n \n \nJeff Alexander \n \n\nJeff Alexander is a seasoned and dynamic musician. His specialties in guitar and vocals showcase Jeff’s personal influences from artists like Jimi Hendrix\, Tommy Emmanuel\, Ritchie Kotzen\, and Al Dimeola\, with his unique flare. He delivers recognizable songs that are proven ‘crowd-pleasers’\, and incorporates climactic originals. \nJeff has organized\, played in and collaborated with multiple Philly-based bands\, cataloging original and cover songs. He has been featured on film\, wedding bands\, played in local festivals such as Roxyunk Porchfest and currently hosts the monthly open mic at The Fallser Club. Currently\, Jeff resides in East Falls and focuses on his solo acoustic performances that punctuate his ability to make one man feel like an entire band. Follow Jeff on Instagram at @Funkandvibe to learn more about upcoming gigs. \n\n  \nBy Car or By Train \nThe East Falls Train Station is a short walk from the Fallser Club. Parking in East Falls is no problem! There is ample free on-street parking near the East Falls train station driveway at 3610 Midvale Ave and a paid municipal lot three blocks away at 4100 Ridge Ave.  Midvale Ave and Ridge Ave are both well-lit!

SUMMARY:The Secret Lives of Spring Wildflowers
DESCRIPTION:Skunk cabbage\, bloodroot\, and trout lilies are among the first signs of spring and warmer weather ahead. Spring ephemerals and wildflowers must complete part of their life cycles before the tree canopy leafs out\, reducing light levels at the forest floor. These plants face many challenges including unpredictable weather and pollinator availability. Spring wildflowers have special adaptations to overcome these challenges and intricate relationships with pollinators and seed dispersers. Learn more about these wildflowers\, their life histories\, and plant-insect interactions\, and look for them during a guided walk in the gardens.\nThis program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center on Wednesday\, April 23\, 2025 (Rain Date: Wednesday\, April 30).\nAbout the Instructor:\nEllen Lake\, PhD\, is the Director of Conservation and Research at Mt. Cuba Center. She taught environmental education and was the Education Director at the Brandywine and Red Clay Valley Associations. Ellen has a master’s degree in Entomology and Ph.D. in Entomology and Wildlife Ecology from the University of Delaware\, where she researched biological control of mile-a-minute weed and how to integrate weed management techniques to restore plant communities. Ellen has extensive experience researching insect-plant interactions\, including work for the USDA in the Greater Everglades ecosystem.

SUMMARY:Earth Day at the Library
DESCRIPTION:Raised beds and raised awareness! Volunteer to clean up the West Oak Lane Library garden and some early Spring planting.\n\n\nEarth Day is Everyday!\n \nVolunteer to prepare the West Oak Lane Library garden for the 2025 growing season. \n \nUrban gardens provide a wide range of benefits for the people who tend them and the communities they nourish. These productive green spaces support climate resiliency\, a healthier environment\, and health & wellness. Urban gardens like the one at the West Oak Lane Library are an integral part of a healthy neighborhood providing an avenue for food sovereignty. \n\n\n\nAll ages are invited to help prepare the West Oak Lane Library garden for the 2025 growing season!\n \nEarly Spring is an ideal time to prepare the garden for a season of successful growing. Volunteers will help refresh the garden at the West Oak Lane Library by building new garden beds\, removing weeds\, replenish soil nutrients\, loosen the soil and more! \nImproving soil health by increasing its organic matter (by introducing compost or adopting no-till methods) is critical. The United States is losing soil 10xs faster than it is replenished. Philadelphia has lost much of the organic matter\, minerals\, sand and clay that make up natural soil due to hundreds of years of urban development. Beneath our feet is lots of “rubble\, debris and the history of the city”. \n \nThrough this volunteer project\, we will all act as environmental and community stewards\, tending to the soil that nourishes the natural world and our place in it. \n\n\n\nRefreshments provided. \n \nBYOB…water bottle that is!\nIn being good stewards of our planet\, we will not be providing individual plastic water bottles\, although water will be available. \nIf you don’t have water bottles\, we will have Black Girls With Green Thumbs water bottles available for sale.

SUMMARY:The reimagining of the oldest building on Broad Street
DESCRIPTION:Lindsey Scannapieco will discuss the approach and ethos in reimagining the iconic buildings at Broad and Pine.\n\n\nThis presentation by Lindsey Scannapieco\, the Founder of Scout\, will focus on the approach and ethos in reimagining the iconic buildings at Broad and Pine\, where Strickland\, Furness\, and Haviland left their influence. Since 1892\, these spaces have nurtured artists\, makers\, and educators — giving rise to institutions like the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Now\, we have the opportunity to build on that foundation\, transforming these interconnected buildings into a dynamic ecosystem of studios\, small businesses\, non-profits\, and artist residences—an open-ended\, ever-evolving place of exchange. Informed by experience executing incremental development and a vision of reanimating these spaces with meaning and possibility\, we are hoping to not merely preserve the architecture; but also seek to restore the conditions for creativity and community to grow. \nPhoto Credit: Michael Bixler \n \nThis event will be held at the Center for Design Philadelphia. \nLight refreshments will be served. \n \nFor more information\, click HERE!

SUMMARY:Provisions | A Virtual Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Attend this virtual session to discuss the exhibit Provisions with artist Rainey Tildale ’94 and poet Charlotte Boulay\n\n\nProvisions is a collaboration between artist Rainey Tisdale ’94 and poet Charlotte Boulay (HC staff)\, which will be on display at the Entrance Ramp Gallery of Lutnick Library from April 1 – June 2\, 2025. Join us for a behind-the-scenes discussion on the making of the exhibit with Rainey and Charlotte. \nProvisions invites the Haverford community to experience poetry as tangible nourishment that girds us for the work of being human. The exhibit showcases Rainey’s “poem preserves”—buckeyes inscribed with carefully selected poems\, nestled in glass jars like summer produce put by for winter. Opening during National Poetry Month\, with poems curated by Charlotte and Rainey\, Provisions offers words to sustain us on seeds that grow toward light. A number of the poems were written or contributed by Fords\, and at least one buckeye in every jar is from the Haverford Arboretum. The jars line the library’s Entrance Ramp Gallery shelves like a community larder\, where we can reach for exactly the words we need when winter settles into our bones\, when we forget how many ways there are to be alive and tender together in this beautiful\, troubled world. \nThe event link will be emailed to participants in the confirmation email generated from program registration.
