SUMMARY:A Jewish Approach to Activism and Accompaniment Through the Climate Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Religion & Environment Series – Session 2: Judaism\n\n\nExploring Religion & Environment Series\nJoin us for a series of lunchtime conversations this Fall and Winter focused on exploring religion and the environment. We will be joined by experts\, theologians\, activists\, and thinkers for deep dives into different religious traditions. By blending informative education with ground-breaking discourse\, we hope that wherever you are on your own journey exploring faith and our changing world\, you will find value in this foray. \nSession 2: A Jewish Approach to Activism and Accompaniment Through the Climate Crisis\nIn this month’s conversation\, are taking a deep dive into the Reconstructionist Jewish tradition. Rabbi Ora Nitkin-Kaner will share about her work in tending to human hearts at the edges of perceived apocalypse. Rabbi Fred Dobb will share about how his approach to climate activism is shaped by his own tradition. Rabbi Nathan Martin will then moderate a panel discussion exploring themes that arise in both of these presentations\, and there will be a time for audience Q&A. \nBring your lunch and your questions – we can’t wait to see you there! \nThis event has been sponsored by Exploring Apocalypse \nOur series co-sponsors: \nBetter Path Coalition\, Delaware Interfaith Power & Light\, Green Muslims \n\n\n\nRabbi Ora Nitkin-Kaner: I’m a rabbi\, climate change chaplain\, and the founder of Exploring Apocalypse\, a space for folks to productively explore their emotional and spiritual responses to the climate crisis. Over the past 15 years\, I’ve served as an advocate\, chaplain\, and rabbi in prisons\, hospitals\, and congregations\, and I write and teach on fear\, intergenerational trauma\, and moral injury within the context of the climate crisis. Originally from Toronto ON\, I live in New Haven CT with my partner Asa and our sweet dog Tuna. \n\n\n\nRabbi Fred Scherlinder: Rabbi Fred Scherlinder Dobb is chair of COEJL (the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life)\, and has served as the rabbi at Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Congregation in Bethesda\, MD since 1997. He serves on the Board of National Interfaith Power & Light\, and previously served on the Maryland/Greater Washington Interfaith Power and Light and Washington Board of Rabbis. He has helped Adat Shalom become a widely-acclaimed green spiritual center and has been active within and beyond Adat Shalom on social and economic justice\, LGBTQ and gender equality and progressive Israel education and advocacy\, as well as eco-Judaism. A Wexner Graduate Fellow\, Fred received a Doctor of Ministry from Wesley Theological Seminary in 2009. His two young children provide both impetus for\, and limits upon\, his activist rabbinate. \n\n\n\nRabbi Nathan Martin: Rabbi Nathan serves as the Associate Rabbi at Congregation Beth Israel in Media and is currently serving as President of the board of PA IPL. Prior to his pursuing the rabbinate\, Nathan worked for nearly a decade in the field of energy efficiency research in California at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He has sought out ways to integrate his passion for environmental sustainability into his rabbinate including participating in the Greenfaith fellowship program\, offering teaching around the intersection of Judaism and the environment at various conferences\, and his ongoing work for PA IPL. Nathan feels that his best stewardship work is done in collaboration with other religiously minded climate activists and is thrilled to put his energies to the important work of the PA IPL Board. \n\n\n\nAbout our Sponsor \n“Exploring Apocalypse is chaplaincy for a world made uncertain by climate change. Rooted in the original meaning of ‘apocalypse’–‘to uncover’ or ‘to reveal’–this is a dedicated space for you to name and explore your feelings around climate change and other systemic unravelings. But you don’t get stuck in your anxiety\, rage\, or grief. You are accompanied through your distress to reveal how you can respond meaningfully—even joyfully!—to the challenges of our time.\n \nExploring Apocalypse guided sessions are one-on-one reflective conversations with a skilled\, trauma-informed climate change chaplain. Sessions are open to folks of all faiths\, identities\, and backgrounds. To learn more visit www.exploringapocalypse.com.

In addition\, participants will learn what green burial is\, see photos of green burial grounds currently in use\, and tap into resources for further learning and for finding green cemeteries where they live. Cuba’s varied landscapes and topography provide the ideal habitats for three of Delaware’s native owl species – the barred\, great horned\, and Eastern screech – and winter is the best time to spot them roosting in our trees. Owls are nocturnal so join us as we search for them just after dusk. Following a brief introductory lecture\, we’ll head out into the garden and listen for their unique calls. Dress for the weather. \nThis program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center on Wednesday\, November 1st\, 2023 (Rain Date: Wednesday\, November 8). \n About the Instructors: \nJoe Sebastiani is the Director of Adult Engagement for the Delaware Nature Society. He is passionate about birds and wildlife\, founded the Ashland Hawk Watch\, and edits Delaware eBird\, an online checklist program\, for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. \nIan Stewart\, PhD\, was raised in Newcastle\, England and received a doctorate in ornithology from the University of Leicester. He has conducted research on tree swallows and bluebirds and how local land management activities are affecting bird numbers and diversity throughout the year. Ian works for the Delaware Nature Society where he is studying the effects of non-native plants on birds. \nRegister Now \nMember Registration \n

When industry moved downtown\, the area was preserved to protect the water supply for the region\, producing an environment that became world renowned for its beauty and inspired the works of Walt Whitman\, John Greenleaf Whittier\, Edgar Allen Poe\, Christopher Morley\, and Currier and Ives. Forbidden Drive is so named for its prohibition of all motor vehicles. The Wissahickon Valley has a stillness untouched by time\, strange for one of the world’s larger cities\, and is surely Philadelphia’s best kept secret\, offering as appealing a walking route as is available for a hundred miles around. \n“The Wissahickon is of so remarkable a loveliness that\, were it flowing in England\, it would be the theme of every bard.” — Poe \n \n“Some of my happiest hours have been spent there\, some of my freest hours.” — Whitman \nOur journey begins at 30th Street Station\, with convenient connections to Septa\, NJ Transit\, Amtrak and Megabus. The walk ends in the tony main-street neighborhood of Chestnut Hill\, where we shall meet for eats and libations\, with two train stations available to carry us back to 30th Street. Easy gravel and paved terrain\, with very few road crossings after one leaves Center City. Two snack bars with nearby bathrooms assist along the way. \n \nThe half-marathon route is a shortest-distance trek along the Schuylkill and Wissahickon. The full route provides a broad and meandering treatment of all of the many highlights of sprawling Fairmount Park\, along with visits to the places of debate and worship of our founding fathers\, the site of the 1876 Centennial Exposition\, the world’s tallest masonry building\, dozens of works of public art\, and the nation’s most pioneering and pedestrian-friendly cemetery\, replete with graves of countless war heroes\, inventors\, tycoons and even local icons like Harry Kalas and Rocky’s Adrian Balboa. \nVisit FreeWalkers.org for more walks like this!\n \nMap of walking route\nMARATHON WALK Highlights\n\nUniversity of Pennsylvania\nSchuylkill Banks Boardwalk\nRittenhouse Square\nWashington Square\nIndependence Hall\nCarpenters Hall\nSpruce Street Harbor Park\nPenns Landing\nChrist Church\nCity Hall\nLogan Circle\nBen Franklin Parkway\nArt Museum steps\nFairmount Waterworks\nBoathouse Row\nKelly Drive\nMemorial Hall\nJapanese House and Garden\nBelmont Plateau\nStrawberry Mansion Bridge\nLaurel Hill Cemetery\nFalls Bridge\nWissahickon Creek\nBattle of Germantown\nForbidden Drive\nValley Green Inn\nMagarge Dam\nCovered bridge\nChestnut Hill\n\nHALF-MARATHON Highlights\n\nFairmount Waterworks\nBoathouse Row\nKelly Drive\nFalls Bridge\nWissahickon Creek\nBattle of Germantown\nForbidden Drive\nValley Green Inn\nMagarge Dam\nCovered bridge\nChestnut Hill\n\nVisit freewalkers.org for ongoing event info: http://freewalkers.org/events \n \nPartners:The East Coast Greenway Alliance is a non-profit organization developing a public multi-use 3\,000 mile trail from Canada to Key West through New Jersey and New York. SUMMARY:Clean Water Action Pennsylvania: Environmental Justice Bike-a-Thon
DESCRIPTION:Please support us in a cause that truly matters. Clean Water Action’s 50-mile combined bike ride and fundraising event will raise awareness of environmental justice issues in Pennsylvania. This event also supports our work to embrace and empower residents in underserved communities of color who are disproportionately burdened with adverse environmental impacts to foster a healthy environment where they live. \nThe Pennsylvania Bike-a-Thon for Environmental Justice will be a two-day event. On Saturday\, October 28\, bikers will travel a loop on the Harrisburg Capital Area Greenbelt\, beginning and ending at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. The ride will offer a contrasting journey through the streets that have huge mansions\, underserved communities and off-road\, wooded trails with lots of trees\, and a creek on the Susquehanna River. It will also offer a view of the Harrisburg Incinerator smoke stack located in the Susquehanna Resource Management Complex in the last half mile of the trip. \nThe next Saturday\, November 4th bikers will assemble near the site of the Nicetown Combined Heat & Power plant and peddle to the Falls Bridge and Schuylkill River Trail to South West Philly pass the junkyard and tire dumps in the neighborhoods of Kingsessing and Elmwood and to Eastwick\, the site of the Clearview Landfill and chronic flooding. The trip will end in the City of Chester passing the proposed site of the proposed Penn LNP and the Chester Waste to Energy Incinerator. \nBoth trips will feature stops and brief presentations led by Maurice Sampson at Environmental Justice locations. Sampson will be the Bike-a-Thon lead rider on both days\, has been an environmental advocate for 52 years\, and is currently the Eastern PA Director of Clean Water Action. \nSign up now to receive more details on how you can sponsor Maurice join him as a sponsored rider or plan a bike ride of your own choosing. SUMMARY:Fall Adopt-A-Tree Treeplanting At Riverbend
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun-filled day with your family to adopt and plant trees at Riverbend.\n\n\nFall is a wonderful time to plant trees just before it turns colder in the winter months. Planting trees at the preserve helps to combat climate change and helps to maintain our local water supply as the trees we plant keep runoff from heading to the Schuylkill River watershed. \nThis event is open to ALL ages! Registration is required as spaces are limited. \nPlease bring your own water and work gloves to the event.
