DESCRIPTION:FOR ADULTS AND YOUTH AGES 12-17 \nDiscover how you can make a difference for pollinators in this presentation by Tyler Docent and Xerces Society Ambassador Woody Kotch. \nWoody is eager to share how individuals can help slow or stop the decline of pollinator populations and improve our environment. In this session\, you will learn about our local pollinators\, their importance in our ecosystem\, and the actions you can take to support them. Woody will also discuss ways to maintain biodiversity in your garden. The program includes a presentation and literature from the Xerces Society and a Q&A session. Weather permitting\, there will be a guided tour of the Pollinator Preserve following the presentation. \nThe Xerces Society is an international nonprofit organization that protects the natural world through the conservation of invertebrates and their habitats. As a science-based organization\, we both conduct our own research and rely upon the most up-to-date information to guide our conservation work. Light snacks will be provided. \nFor Black folks\, a recent history wrought with systemic violence against both the natural world and our land stewarding ancestors\, can make being present in nature difficult. And even so\, we is here\, present in those spaces. \nCome play\, explore and adventure in forest bathing\, journaling and self-portraiture. Khaliah will lead a beginner level hike along the Wissahickon where folks will engage in active listening\, internal experiencing and earthbased writing prompts. After the hike\, participants will stop at a comfortable location to explore and practice self-portraiture\, either solo or in pairs/groups\, using elements from the natural world. \nPlease note that this space is welcome to all folks and please be aware that this is a BIPOC sacred space and we will be centering the Black experience.

DESCRIPTION:Native plants of the Eastern Temperate Forest are beautiful\, inspiring\, and critically important for healthy landscapes. From the subdued colors and fragrances of spring wildflowers to the exuberance of summer perennials and the captivating hues of fall foliage\, discover a wealth of plants that satisfy your gardening needs throughout the seasons. Using Mt. Cuba Center’s stunning gardens\, learn to identify 60 trees\, shrubs\, and herbaceous perennials in each Native Plants course. Examine their key identifying characteristics\, preferred growing conditions\, overall size\, and ecological significance. Students seeking a Certificate in Ecological Gardening must take the onsite exam. Garden tours include walking over rolling terrain and mulched paths.\nThis program takes place online with separate in-person tours of Mt. Cuba Center’s gardens. Six prerecorded online lectures are available starting Monday\, May 27th. Three garden tours take place in person on Saturdays: June 8th\, 22\, July 13th.\n*No class on July 6th\nOptional exam: Saturday July 20th.\n About the Instructors:\nKathy Elliot works as an Educator at Mt. Cuba Center. She earned her PhD in biology from Northwestern University and an MSc in plant biodiversity and taxonomy from the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and University of Edinburgh in Scotland. As part of her studies\, she completed a certificate in field botany in Colombia. We will be meeting at the I Street and Ramona Ave Gateway\, there is plenty of street parking around the gateway. \nCome join our cleanup crew for a chance to win a United by Blue backpack made out of recycled plastic and stick around for free food after the cleanup. Environmental non-profits from the Philly area will be tabling to show how you can get more involved in their amazing efforts. \nAll cleanup gear (gloves\, pickers\, buckets\, & trash bags) will be provided\, but feel free to bring your own gloves if preferred. Please wear comfortable clothing and closed-toed shoes\, and don’t forget sun protection and rain gear (just in case! ☔️). DESCRIPTION:Over 130 species of birds have visited the Strawberry Mansion Reservoir since it was decommissioned. Now that nature has taken over the space\, we’ll be going out in the canoes to find out exactly what draws them to this special place. We will be fitting everyone with paddles\, Personal Floatation Device (PFD)\, and binoculars. Join us for a paddle as we search for flora and fauna that call the reservoir home. \nNo canoeing experience or bird/ plant knowledge required! Just bring a buddy and enjoy your time on the reservoir. Participants will learn tips and proper canoe technique from our Outward Bound Instructors. \nRequirements: \n1). Stroll the many rooms and make observations to decorate your personal viewpoint of the fireplaces. \nThe pop-up cards are cut using a cricut machine. We will be having the machines for you to watch them make the cards \nThis event will take place on location at Glen Foerd\, a hidden treasure in Northeast Philadelphia on the Delaware River about 10 minutes drive from the Tacony LAB. This event is cohosted with Glen Foerd and your registration information will be shared with Glen Foerd. \nRegistration is recommended\, but not required for this workshop. This is not an instructional work shop but more like a make and take experience. SUMMARY:Jazz on the Green at Fisher Park
DESCRIPTION:Jazz on the Green will bring live music to the Olney section of Philadelphia on Saturday\, June 8. This multi-generational showcase will present four distinguished groups of musicians including the venerable Professor Randy J. Gibson & the Double Portion Ensemble\, Vibraphonist Hudson River\, Maria Mamarou Quartet and the legendary Odean Pope Quartet. \nThe event will be held from 3 pm – 7 pm. \nIn the event of inclement weather\, the event will be moved indoors at Gibson School of Music at 5425 North 5th Street. \nJazz on the Green is produced by the Olney Culture Lab (of the CultureTrust Greater Philadelphia). \nMain support for this event is given by William Penn Foundation. Additional support provided by Forman Arts Initiative\, Councilman Anthony Phillips and Fisher Park Community Alliance.
