SUMMARY:Community Paddle Boating at FDR Park
DESCRIPTION:See FDR Park from a new perspective with a paddle on the lake!\n\nDate\nSunday\, August 30 \n\n\n\nTime\n10:00 am – 2:00 pm \n\n\n\nLocation\nFDR Park Boathouse \nFDR Park\nPhiladelphia PA 19145 \n\nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and Independence Seaport Museum for free paddle boating at FDR Park on select dates in the spring\, summer\, and fall! \nPaddle boats are an easy and safe way for families and people of all ages to explore Edgewood Lake\, just behind the FDR Park Boathouse. As you pedal around\, use the kid-friendly binoculars provided to spot turtles\, ducks\, blooming flowers\, and maybe even a great blue heron – the long-legged shorebird the boats are shaped after. This event is geared toward our FDR Park neighbors. \nChildren must be able to fit into a life jacket (30+ pounds) in order to participate. All minors must have an adult with them. \nWaivers will be provided and must be signed before participating. You can do this ahead of time by clicking the ‘sign up for event reminder’ button below. Please include everyone in your party on the form. This will also ensure that you receive any important weather updates that may affect the event. Please note\, clicking the ‘sign up for event reminder’ button does not guarantee a spot on a boat! There is often a line to get on the boats. If the wait time for boarding is longer than 30 minutes\, the line will close before the actual event end time of 2 PM. \nThere is no place to store belongings while out on the water\, so we recommend bringing a small bag/waterproof case to store them in. We suggest having at least two people on each boat to balance pedaling; boats cannot hold more than four people. \nTICKET PRICE: Free\, RSVP appreciated but not required \nABOUT INDEPENDENCE SEAPORT MUSEUM: The Independence Seaport Museum\, located along the Delaware River at Penn’s Landing\, invites visitors of all ages to discover Philadelphia’s river of history and world of connections. With water as the unifying thread\, stories of those who lived and worked along our regional waterways come to life through award-winning exhibitions. Our historic ships\, the Olympia and the Becuna\, connect Philadelphia to the rest of the world\, telling tales about the people and cultures they have interacted with on their journeys. These stories are woven into every aspect of the visitor’s journey\, from the first time they enter the lobby to when they walk off the gangway of Olympia. \n\nQUESTIONS?: Feel free to reach out to programs@myphillypark.org.

SUMMARY:Healing in the Garden: Art\, Plants\, and Medicine at Bartram’s Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Garden for a conversation about healing across time\, place\, and practice. Set inside America’s oldest surviving botanical garden\, this special event brings together artist Terrence Gore\, herbalist and urban forager Lady Danni Morinich\, and Dr. Burton of Burton Wellness & Injury Center for a thoughtful discussion on the many ways nature has shaped our understanding of medicine\, resilience\, and care.\nModerated by WHYY’s Maiken Scott\, the conversation will begin with a panel exploring art as a form of healing\, the wisdom and usefulness of plants growing all around us\, and the connection between traditional\, alternative\, and modern approaches to health. Terrence Gore will reflect on how Bartram’s Garden has influenced his artwork and his personal healing journey. Lady Danni will share insight into the medicinal and practical uses of plants found in our own backyards and public green spaces. Dr. Burton will bring a medical perspective to the conversation\, connecting the body\, wellness\, and integrative approaches to care.\nFollowing the panel\, guests will be invited to continue the conversation outdoors with a guided plant tour of Bartram’s Garden\, looking at the landscape through the lens of healing\, history\, and discovery. Light refreshments will be served. \nACCESSIBILITY – This event will take place in the Barn\, an indoor space that is accessible via wheelchair. It is about a 2-minute walk from the main Visitor Parking Loop\, ADA-accessible on a paved path at a slight incline. Gendered\, multi-stall public restrooms and all-gender single restrooms\, both ADA-accessible\, are about a two-minute walk away.\nWe’re happy to make accommodations for guests with mobility limitations. Large portions of our 50+ acre botanical garden can be explored via wheelchair\, though some of our paths should be used at your own discretion. If you have questions or concerns\, don’t hesitate to reach out ahead of time to info@bartramsgarden.org.\nFor more information about planning your visit\, see bartramsgarden.org/visit

SUMMARY:Botanical Sun Printing: Section A
DESCRIPTION:Cyanotype\, also known as sun prints\, is a camera-less photographic process that uses light\, chemistry\, and nature to create striking blue-and-white images. In this hands-on class\, explore how this historic technique invites close observation of plants while celebrating form\, texture\, and the fleeting beauty of the natural world. Begin with a brief introduction to the history of cyanotype\, then use the sun itself as a UV light source to create your own prints using plant materials harvested from Mt. Cuba’s gardens. As you arrange leaves\, stems\, and flowers\, you’ll learn how composition\, exposure\, and light interact to produce unique and expressive images—no photography experience required. \nYou will leave with finished cyanotype prints and a deeper appreciation for the intersection of art\, science\, and plants. This creative experience offers a new way to engage with Mt. Cuba’s landscape\, turning observation into lasting works of art. All supplies are provided. Please note the use of chemicals may stain\, so wear appropriate clothing. \nThis program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Saturday\, August 29\, 2026 (Rain Date: Saturday\, September 12). \n🥬 Gift or take home \n About the Instructor: \nShelly Silva holds a M.S. in Marketing Management from Wilmington University and a B.F.A. in Fine Art Photography from Corcoran College of Art + Design. When Shelly is not teaching workshops on botanical cyanotypes or alternative photographic processes\, she works as a digital communications specialist at the University of Delaware. She enjoys teaching people about the connections between nature\, art\, and the process of art making. \nREGISTER NOW: \nGeneral Public \nIndividual+ & Dual+ Members \nSupporter\, Advocate & Conservator Members \n
