SUMMARY:What's Gender Got to Do With It?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation about consequences of gender toxicity on a global scale.\n\n\n In a world threatened by armed conflicts\, climate collapse\, widening inequality\, and potentially ungovernable technologies\, political leaders have plenty on their plates. At the same time\, regressive and repressive gender policies are taking center stage in many places around the world. For instance\, women’s rights are in continued crisis in Afghanistan; women’s health care is under assault in too many places\, including the U.S.; and loudly anti-feminist presidents govern Argentina and El Salvador.  \nWhy have reductive\, exclusionary\, and even life-endangering reproductive and gender-based policies gained such traction globally? How do gender politics play into it all? Join Perry World House as former UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights and current chair of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) Board\, Kate Gilmore\, considers the cause and consequences of gender toxicity on a global scale.  \n\n\nSPEAKER\n \nKate Gilmore is a former United Nations (UN) deputy high commissioner for human rights\, a professor-in-practice with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)\, and an honorary professor with the University of Essex Human Rights Centre. Chair of International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) Board\, she is also vice chair of the Interpeace Board\, co-chair of the World Health Organization (WHO) Gender and Human Rights Advisory Panel on Human Reproduction\, and a member of the WHO Immunization Agenda 2030 Partnership Panel. Previously a fellow with Harvard University’s Carr Centre\, Professor Gilmore was assistant secretary general with the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and earlier\, Amnesty International’s executive deputy secretary general. Her career began in Australia\, having received a BA from the University of New England and a BSW from the University of Melbourne. Her areas of interest include the international human rights system\, political narratives on sexual and reproductive health and rights\, youth exclusion from key political processes\, and international leadership in tumultuous times.

SUMMARY:QWANQWA
DESCRIPTION:QWANQWA\nSATURDAY\, APRIL 13\n8:00PM \nTICKETS\nArs Nova Workshop presents a special performance by QWANQWA\, a five-piece improvisatory ensemble based in Addis Ababa and dedicated to furthering Ethiopia’s unique musical traditions\, on Saturday\, April 13 at Solar Myth. Inspired by a shared passion for Ethiopian music\, the group brings together some of the most accomplished traditional players in the country; creating a space to explore new sounds and break the rules in an otherwise conservative musical culture.\nQWANQWA takes its name from the Amharic word for “language\,” dedicated to creating musical dialogues between cultures and the proposition that music is a universal language that transcends borders. Their singular sound is built on an array of Ethiopian traditional instruments. QWANQWA was founded by American violinist Kaethe Hostetter\, who first performed Ethiopian music as a founding member of Debo Band. After relocating to Ethiopia’s capital\, Addis Ababa\, in 2009\, she dove deep into the culture\, working on numerous musical projects. In 2012 Hostetter brought together some of the undisputed heavyweights in Addis Ababa’s music scene to form QWANQWA. \nSince then\, QWANQWA has become an integral and constant presence on the Addis Ababa music scene\, and has released three critically-acclaimed albums. Members of QWANQWA have performed with some of the biggest names in Ethiopian music and beyond\, including Getachew Mekuria\, Mahmoud Ahmed\, Mulatu Astatke\, The EX\, Thurston Moore\, Fred Frith\, Butch Morris\, and more.

SUMMARY:Jack Larimore: Bonding
DESCRIPTION:When experiencing nature and her complex relationships\, New Jersey-based maker Jack Larimore is drawn to the positive bonds that coexist with the challenges of competition. His creative muse pulls from this nuanced interplay\, where he perceives patterns and processes that speak to resilience\, adaptability\, and interconnectedness. He sees bonds materializing through the process of making\, ranging from the personal and domestic rituals of procreation\, meal preparation\, fostering a home\, and nurturing a family\, to the more globally recognized acts of producing music and stories. \nThe works in this exhibition are an intuitive and philosophical exploration of those stories and these acts of bonding. In essence\, Bonding isn’t just a collection of artworks; it’s a journey into the soul of a maker and his profound relationship with his process and the materials that fuel it.

SUMMARY:Storytelling with Saundra Gilliard and On Blackness: Artist Talks and Panel
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Saturday\, April 13th from 3 – 5 pm for a hybrid artist talks and a panel on Blackness in America\n\n\nPlease join us on Saturday\, April 13th from 1:30 – 5:30 pm for a hybrid cultural sharing artist talks\, panel\, and storytelling event Blackness in America in conjunction with the exhibition Dolls\, Idols\, and Ideals. Artists Kimberly Camp and Emilio Maldonado are joined by Storyteller Saundra Gilliard \nThe afternoon will open with a performance by Saundra Gilliard who will weave together a collection of stories from West Africa\, Black America\, and the Caribbean\, which have inspired the artists in Dolls\, Idols\, and Ideal. These stories will help audiences better understand the work and the conversations within. Doors will open at 1:30 pm\, and the performance will start at 2:00 pm. \nWe will continue with two mini-artist talks from Kimberly Camp and Emilio Maldonado\, the featured artists of Dolls\, Idols\, and Ideals. After a short introduction\, Kimberly\, Emilio\, and Gilliard will be joined by guest moderator Erlin Geffrard to discuss Blackness in America. Guests will be able to select if they would like to join virtually or in person during checkout. Virtual audiences will be sent a Zoom link in the days before the event. \n \n________ \nAbout our Guests: \n \nSaundra Gilliard is a nationally recognized Storyteller and Personal Transformation Leader. For the past 20 years\, her stage performances and training “playshops” have promoted and cultivated Sacred Feminine Practices and techniques. Saundra is the founder of Femininely Free!\, and the current co-chair of the Philadelphia Folklore Project. \n \nDolls\, Idols\, and Ideals features Kimberly Camp and Emilio Maldonado\, two Black artists investigating their identity\, label\, lineage\, and how they create their own power while stranded in a “new world.” Camp and Maldonado artists use symbols – made or found – that reference their ancestry and spirituality. Rather than working from a notion of unchanging traditions\, they engage with aesthetics and amalgamated cultural practices that have been adapted in order to survive. Each artist finds strength\, magic\, and power in these shapeshifting\, resilient elements in full embrace and exploration of their individual and shared heritages.
