SUMMARY:Reception for "Binding Ties" & Meet and Greet with Michelle Marcuse
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, July 19th\, in celebration of Park Towne Place’s Artist In Residence\, Michelle Marcuse!\nDuring her 2023 artist residency at Park Towne Place\, Philadelphia-based artist Michelle Marcuse created a new body of work\, resulting in this exhibition\, aptly titled Binding Ties. Originating from South Africa\, Marcuse’s studio practice investigates the concept of our intricate relationship between identity\, history\, and our shared human experience amidst a “melting pot” of cultures. With an ever-curious exploration\, Marcuse utilized wire\, string\, and raffia to create the included works. Binding Ties pushes the boundaries of her creative practice as she interweaves traditional craft techniques with her aesthetic sensibilities.\nEach meticulously crafted composition serves as a conduit for unearthing the interconnectedness of our humanity. In an era defined by increasing divisions\, Marcuse’s artistic journey reevaluates the importance of art in fostering empathy as she reflects on her own heritage and the power of art to transcend time and place.\nAbout the Artist:\nMichelle Marcuse (South Africa) holds a Bachelor of Design from the Shenkar College of Engineering and Design (Israel)\, a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Tyler School of Art (Philadelphia\, PA\, USA)\, and has additionally studied at The Michaelis School of Art\, University of Cape Town (South Africa). Marcuse has exhibited widely including notable exhibitions with BLAM Projects (Brooklyn\, NY)\, Arte y Amor\, Taller Boricua (NYC)\, and Borderless Caribbean\, The Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance (Miami\, FL)\, and Against Gravity: TECTONICS\, DORAL Contemporary Art Museum (Doral\, FL). Marcuse is active locally\, exhibiting at Grizzly Grizzly\, List Gallery\, the Philadelphia International Airport\, Rowan University\, and Park Towne Place.\nInternationally\, her work was included at the Art Life Foundation in Hong Kong and at the Restart Museum in Hangzhou\, China. Marcuse had a CFEVA fellowship\, she made it to the finalist position for the prestigious Joan Mitchell Foundation and received a nomination for The Pew Fellowship in the Arts. She was co-director of HOUSEGallery from 2010 – 2020. Her work can be found in public and private collections\, including The Philadelphia Museum of Art. She currently works and resides in Fishtown\, Philadelphia.

SUMMARY:Kingsessing Community Greening Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Only 30 residents will be chosen: must register & COMMIT TO PARTICIPATE IN ALL 3 workshops: July 19th\, Aug 2nd\, & Aug 16th\, 5PM-7PM per date\n\n\nPlease join us in developing a community-led Green Vision Plan for Kingsessing. Your neighborhood has been selected to install a green demonstration project\, which this community-led plan will determine. Collaborate on creating the types of green that will best support your community. \nWe are sponsoring a three-part workshop series to co-create the Green Vision Plan. Recognizing your service to the community\, YOU ARE INVITED to apply. Thirty applicants who agree to attend all workshops will be selected. Those selected will receive $225 for their participation. Workshops will include a light dinner\, with transportation available and reimbursement for childcare costs as needed. \nRegistration closes at midnight July 17th or sooner based on response to this announcement. If you are interested\, apply ASAP. \n \nThe Kingsessing Community Greening Workshops is a three-part series involving neighborhood\, civic\, and business leaders. As a participant\, you will share information about your neighborhood\, tour select areas that could be future green hubs\, and prioritize projects and locations. This project is not an academic exercise. Resource organizations\, and existing green programs around the city are being mobilized to expand their programs in Kingsessing and additional funding will be sought to make the plan that you and your neighbors produce. \n \nThe workshops include: \n\nWednesday\, July 19th: Kingsessing Planning Workshop: participants will map the locations of all existing greening programs\, vacant lots\, and favored locations where people gather or are otherwise valued by the community.\n\n\nWednesday\, August 2nd: Kingsessing Walkshop: participants will tour locations identified in the June Workshop to determine feasible greening options and potential challenges.\n\n\nWednesday\, August 16th: Kingsessing Green Plan Prioritization Workshop: participants will meet to review\, approve\, and prioritize a draft Green Vision Plan for Kingsessing.\n\n \nThe Kingsessing Community Workshops are sponsored by Clean Water Action and Hinge Collective\, team members of the Resilient Community Stormwater Initiative. \nThe Resilient Communities Stormwater Initiative (RSCI)\, seeks to manage stormwater and advance other community greening goals in historically underserved neighborhoods using the approach known as green stormwater infrastructure – or GSI. When thoughtfully designed\, GSI can reduce flooding and pollution caused by stormwater runoff\, increase neighborhood green space\, and contribute to other climate-resilient community benefits. \nDuring the past eighteen months\, the project has engaged residents in ten of Philadelphia’s least-served neighborhoods to identify what greening means to each neighborhood and the role of green infrastructure and other climate-resilient projects. The Kingsessing Green Visioning Workshops are the next step in this process. \nThe Resilient Community Stormwater Initiative is funded by the William Penn Foundation. \nOther members of the RCSI team include the Academy of Natural Sciences\, The Nature Conservancy\, Greenprint Partners\, PEER Environmental\, and The Sustainable Water Resource Engineering Lab at Drexel University.

We are sending monthly invites to become a Reuse Volunteer to those who have volunteered 10 or more times! Reuse Volunteers help process materials in our Reuse bins after they leave the initial sorting table. It’s a great opportunity to understand the deconstruction of sample garments\, what types of items are donatable or mendable\, and how materials are processed for reuse or recyclability. We monitor our Eventbrite registrations closely. If you think you may have completed 10 sorting sessions and did not receive an invitation to sign up\, let us know at volunteer@fabscrap.org using the email you register for sessions with. \nPlease read below for additional information on volunteering\, including other changes at the FABSCRAP Philly warehouse due to COVID-19. \n— \nWhat to expect: \n\nWelcome: Intros and overview of FABSCRAP (10 minutes)\nTraining: Learn how FABSCRAP sorts fabric for recycling (15 minutes)\nSort: Sort through fabric samples and large pieces\, pulling out usable fabrics for reuse and removing hardware and paper from fabric swatches for recycling (~2.5 hours)\nShop for fabric!
