SUMMARY:In-Person Citywide Climate Resilience Plan Community Workshop
DESCRIPTION:How is extreme weather affecting your daily life? What does your neighborhood need to be better prepared? \nTTF Watershed Partnership is proud to host a community workshop in collaboration with the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Sustainability. Together\, we’ve helped design a workshop that is specific to our neighborhood\, grounded in local experiences\, and centered on community voices. \nThis workshop will provide direct input to Philadelphia’s Citywide Climate Resilience Plan\, which is focused on developing strategies at different scales – citywide and neighborhood-level solutions – to prepare for extreme heat\, flooding\, storms\, power outages\, and other climate impacts. \nWhy does this matter? \nClimate change is already impacting our homes\, health\, and daily lives—but those impacts don’t look the same in every neighborhood. Decisions about where resources go\, what gets built\, and how communities are supported are being made now. \nThis workshop is a chance to: \n\nMake sure City decision-makers understand what residents are actually experiencing\nEnsure climate investments protect the places\, relationships\, and resources our community values\nLift up solutions that already exist locally\, rather than starting from scratch\nHelp shape priorities so future funding and programs reflect real neighborhood needs\n\nYour participation helps move climate planning from ideas to people-centered solutions. \nWhy attend? \n\nShare your lived experience with extreme weather\nHelp identify neighborhood strengths\, challenges\, and priorities\nLift up what’s already working\, and where support is most needed\nContribute directly to solutions that will inform City decision-making\nConnect with neighbors around shared values and ideas\n\nAs a thank-you for your time\, in-person participants will receive a $50 stipend and a free meal. \nWhat to expect \nThis is a welcoming\, interactive session. Participants will: \n\nReflect on what they love about their community and what gives them hope\nShare how extreme weather has affected their homes\, health\, and daily lives\nIdentify what helps people prepare for and recover from climate events\nName barriers that make preparedness and recovery harder\nPrioritize solutions that would make the biggest difference locally\n\nNo technical or policy background is needed\, just your perspective. \nLearn more and sign up \nYour voice matters. Join us to help ensure Philly’s climate plan reflects the real needs\, strengths\, and priorities of our neighborhood.

Everyone will create their own unique paper infused with native wild-flower seeds and pretty petals! Please be aware that this process does involve water and is slightly messy. This is a beginner friendly workshop and you do not need any paper making experience. This workshop is open to folks 16+. \nSpace is limited in our studio- we are able to accommodate 8 attendees. The studio/workshop space is up 4 steps of stairs but we can accommodate and move the tables we will be working at for this workshop to the “first floor”. Please let us know if you would like the workshop to take place in our “first floor” store area. There is a ramp to enter our store but because of how the building was made\, there is a sharp turn when entering. If this circumstance occurs\, please email StitchAndDestroyClothing@gmail.com ASAP- this credit is only available if we hear from you prior to workshop’s commencement. \nIn the event that STITCH AND DESTROY cancels this workshop\, an alternate date will be chosen and ticket refunds will be available to all that are unable to attend the alternate date.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: The Neanderthals Among Us
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “The Neanderthals Among Us\,” on the genetic legacy of our ancestors’ pairings with Homo neanderthalensis and what such genes tell us about prehistoric life\, with Alexander Platt\, evolutionary geneticist and senior research scientist at University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. \n“Extinction” is a slippery word. Neanderthals went extinct tens of thousands of years ago\, yet in a sense they’re more genetically present on Earth than ever given all of the markers of Neanderthal ancestry found mixed in the genes of the eight billion Homo sapiens around today. Moreover\, Neanderthals aren’t the only type of humans whose extinctions weren’t the end of the line. \nCome to Philadelphia’s Black Squirrel Club to learn about fascinating research on the relationship between Neanderthals and modern humans being done by the University of Pennsylvania’s Tishkoff Lab. That lab\, broadly devoted to studying genetic variation in global populations\, generated worldwide headlines in February with a study finding that most of our Neanderthal ancestry appears to come from the pairing of male Neanderthals with Homo sapiens females \nDr. Alexander Platt\, lead co-author of the recent study\, will talk about what we know about human-Neanderthal interactions and the major questions that have yet to be answered. \nYou’ll learn how fossil evidence helps us know where and when individuals from various early human groups lived\, while anatomical similarities between them let us speculate about their respective migration histories and their relationships. Genetic evidence\, from both modern humans and samples of ancient DNA\, offers us fresh insights into the connections between some of them. \nDr. Platt will talk about how modern humans and Neanderthals shared a common ancestor over 500\,000 years ago. They then spent hundreds of thousands of years evolving on separate continents\, only to encounter each other repeatedly over the last 250\,000 years\, during which their interactions and interbreeding left each carrying a complex set of genetic relics of the other. \nExactly how and why such pairings took place is one of the key mysteries that Dr. Platt and his colleagues are working to solve. To get a better sense of how sex differences shaped those interactions\, the researchers contrast genetic diversity in non-sex chromosomes with genetic diversity in the X chromosome\, more reflective of the history of women than men. \nYou’ll emerge from the talk with a much better understanding of how breakthroughs in genetics are contributing to our understanding of human evolution\, as well as a recognition that our own genetic makeup tells us about our roots in prehistory. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage: A reconstruction of a Neanderthal man on display at the Neanderthal Museum in Mettman\, Germany (Neanderthal Museum / Wikimedia Commons).
