SUMMARY:Nature as Healer: A (Grief) Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:“The people cannot be healed until the land is healed. The land cannot be healed until the people are healed by the land.” – Martin Prechtel\, author  \nNature can be a great healer for the heartaches we all experience along our journey. Join Naila Francis\, founder of This Hallowed Wilderness\, for a writing workshop to explore the restorative power of nature (right around Earth Day). \nTogether\, we will walk through the shady woods and sunny meadows of Hildacy Preserve\, listening to our inner voices\, on this inspiring nature immersion that also invites us into reciprocal relationship with the land and wildlife. \nBring a notebook and a writing instrument for this workshop. (We will also have some available.) \nOur stroll through the woods will be silent\, followed by some meditative time beside the flowing Crum Creek\, and quiet reflection. \nYou will be invited to share whatever you wish in a “sacred circle\,” but this is not required. The intent of this event is to bring people together\, whatever their losses and struggles\, and to connect with others and the natural world at their own comfort level. \nAbout our instructor: Naila is a grief coach and death midwife who companions people on their grief journey through multiple spaces and practices\, including meditations in nature and the written word.

SUMMARY:Kati Gegenheimer: We've Only Just Begun
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in painting but extending into architecture and social space\, the exhibition positions love not as a private or sentimental subject\, but as a serious aesthetic\, political\, and communal structure. \nTo reinaugurate the newly renovated Morris Gallery\, PAFA presents Kati Gegenheimer: We’ve Only Just Begun\, an immersive monographic exhibition exploring love–familial\, romantic\, or brotherly–at this moment of profound social division. Anchored by a symbol-laden painted musical score of the titular line from the Carpenters’ 1970 song\, the exhibition presents works surveying how love is a necessary choice to be cultivated\, measured\, sustained\, or dismissed\, over time. \nRooted in painting but extending into architecture and social space\, the exhibition positions love not as a private or sentimental subject\, but as a serious aesthetic\, political\, and communal structure. Gegenheimer’s markmaking\, symbolism\, and vibrant use of color reclaim emblems of care and tenderness (hearts\, love notes\, hinges\, calendars\, keyholes\, to-do lists)\, and ponder how love is practiced over time rather than experienced in a singular instance. In an era driven by speed\, extraction\, and instant gratification\, the exhibition insists on return and continuity. \nGegenheimer’s paintings are devoted expressions of love\, luck\, and time\, drawing inspiration from art history\, architecture\, popular culture\, and craft. Her works embrace the decorative and diaristic\, each an altar to a fleeting moment. Reliant on color\, tempo\, and composition\, each of her paintings is a sign\, symbol\, and record all at once.

SUMMARY:Arbor Day Tree Planting
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Arbor Day with the Arboretum!\n\n\nThe Arboretum has a longstanding tradition of planting trees on Arbor Day. First observed at Haverford on April 4\, 1902\, representatives of the Pennsylvania Forestry Association came out to the campus to celebrate the holiday. It became such a popular celebration that in the early 1900s\, a song was arranged by J. H. Redfield\, Class of 1899\, and published by Hums and Noble. Over the years\, the Arboretum has planted hundreds of trees in honor of this special day. \nThis year\, our guest speaker will be our student workers. The location of the tree planting is behind VCAM. Members of Haverford College Arboretum will be able to take home their membership perk of a dividend plant during this event. Parking for off-campus community members can be found in the visitor parking lot.

SUMMARY:Fridays in the Field
DESCRIPTION:Practice observation and nature identification in the Wagner’s Teaching Garden!\n\n\nThe Wagner’s Teaching Garden is our most valuable classroom. Not only is our green space full of pollinator gardens\, but it is also a certified Wildlife Habitat\, Bird Habitat\, and Monarch Waystation—our milkweed plants provide valuable nutrients for Monarch butterflies during their cross continental migration. \nBeginning Friday\, April 10th\, the Wagner Teaching Garden will be open for independent educational exploration every Friday from 1 – 3:00pm. \nVisitors of all ages may borrow hand lenses for close observation of our urban ecosystem\, use nature guides to help identify the different animals\, trees\, and rocks found in our yard\, or take time to relax in the shade and draw from nature. Wagner staff will be available to facilitate use of materials\, but Fridays in the Field is a mostly unguided opportunity to experience the Wagner Teaching Garden. \nVisitors looking to attend Fridays in the Field must enter the museum through the front entrance on Montgomery street and check in with the front desk. Visitors who walk-in and visitors who preregister\, here or through the 2026 Visit the Wagner Eventbrite\, will have full access to the museum and access to the yard from 1pm – 3:00pm on Fridays. \n \n\n\n\n \nThings to Know Before Your Visit\n• Walk-in visitors are welcome. Advance registration is appreciated and will speed up your entry to the museum. \n• There is no coat check or place to stow personal items – please travel light. \n• The museum is located on the second floor of the building. There are 5 steps at the entryway and a flight of stairs to access the museum. It is not wheelchair accessible. \n• To protect the specimens and our historic interiors\, photography is not allowed in the museum. Open containers of food and drink are not permitted in the building. \n•The Institute does not have a parking lot. Street parking on Montgomery Avenue and 17th Street is free. There is 2-hour free parking on Bouvier Street and on many blocks near the Wagner and metered parking on Cecil B. Moore Avenue. The nearest parking garage is at the Liacouras Center on 15th Street and Montgomery Avenue. \n \nA dream that keeps growing… \nIn 1855\, William Wagner had a dream of providing free science education to anyone who wanted to learn\, regardless of background or ability to pay. Today\, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education\, not only through the museum\, but through a wide range of courses\, lectures\, field trips\, and children’s science programs. Donations also assist us in caring for the museum and library collections and in preserving our wonderful building\, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. To learn more about what we do please visit our website. \n \nRegistration Information\nIn keeping with its original charter\, admission is free—donations are suggested to ensure the future and quality of Wagner’s free education programs and to preserve its National Landmark building and collections. \nSuggested Donations \n$25/Family \n$10/adult \n$5/student \n$0 – Wagner members \nFor any questions\, please email communications@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x17. \nIf you would like to check your membership status or become a member\, please email AbigailC@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x11.

SUMMARY:An Evening of Trillium and Wine: Complementary Pairings
DESCRIPTION:Great wine and food pairings work because they either echo one another or create striking contrasts—and the same principles can be applied to the natural world. Join renowned scent ecologist Dr. Robert Raguso for a one of a kind sensory experience that blends botany\, chemistry\, and the art of tasting. \nDr. Raguso has spent decades studying the floral scents of native plant species\, including trilliums—one of Mt. Cuba’s signature collections. Unlike conventional flowers\, trilliums release unexpected fragrances reminiscent of wine\, cheese\, fruit\, and spices. Drawing on his pioneering research in chemical ecology and plant pollinator communication\, Dr. Raguso has curated a “flight” of Mt. Cuba trilliums paired with wines that complement their earthy\, woodsy aromas. \nIn this immersive class\, explore the chemistry behind trillium scents\, their ecological significance\, and the surprising ways they align with the flavor profiles of selected wines. As you taste and compare\, take note of the pairings that resonate with you—each one revealing a deeper connection between plants\, pollinators\, and the sensory world we share. \nExperience a rare opportunity to learn from a leading expert whose work has transformed our understanding of floral scent and biodiversity\, and enjoy an unforgettable journey through the fragrances and flavors of spring.\n(Ages 21 and over) \nThis program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Friday\, April 24\, 2026. An afternoon section of this program runs Saturday\, April 25. \n About the Instructor: \nRobert Raguso\, PhD\, is a professor of Chemical Ecology at Cornell University. His research interests run the spectrum of insect-plant interactions mediated by chemistry\, especially the role of fragrance in pollination ecology and animal behavior. He has promoted his research by organizing symposia\, short courses\, and workshops world-wide. \nREGISTER NOW: \nGeneral Public \nIndividual+ & Dual+ Members \nSupporter\, Advocate & Conservator Members \n
