SUMMARY:Bodies and Souls
DESCRIPTION:“My concern is with humanity. I want to confront the viewer with life and with what we are doing to each other. I hope to awaken in the viewer a sense of compassion . . . without compassion there is nothing.”\n—Luis Cruz Azaceta \nBodies and Souls examines the liberatory power of figurative art. Though often treated as conservative in the second half of the 20th century\, artists used representational and realist methods to assert presence for those omitted from dominant narratives or harmfully depicted by those outside their communities. Realism and representation remain powerful means to show embodied human experience\, encompassing gender\, sexuality\, interpersonal relationships\, psychological states\, and connections to home. \nThese methods can help us imagine the world we want to live in. Representational art has been critical for artists who want to make themselves and their communities visible on their own terms. It provides the agency to see and be seen\, to show relationships\, pleasure\, and autonomy. Representing ourselves is a powerful means of celebrating our full humanity. \nThis is the throughline of an eclectic collection formed by Philadelphians Robert and Frances Coulborn Kohler. Bodies and Souls celebrates their devotion to artists and immense generosity towards PAFA. Featuring over 120 works given and promised to the museum\, the exhibition will examine prominent themes in the collection\, integrating artists who are often seen independently or as part of regional communities. \nBodies and Souls is presented concurrently with an exhibition of the same title featuring the Kohlers’ personal collection at Woodmere\, Charles Knox Smith Hall\, 9201 Germantown Ave. Bodies & Souls – Woodmere. \nFeatured Artwork: Rafael Ferrer (born 1933) El Bolero\, 1983–84. Oil on canvas; 60 × 72 in. © Rafael Ferrer\, courtesy of the artist \nThe exhibition will include works by Robert Arneson\, Luis Cruz Azaceta\, Joan Brown\, Roy DeForest\, Rafael Ferrer\, Viola Frey\, Gregory Gillespie\, Juan Gonzalez\, Red Grooms\, Anne Minich\, Gladys Nilsson\, Ed Paschke\, Christina Ramberg\, Winfred Rembert\, Tabitha Vevers\, John Wilde\, Didier William\, Karl Wirsum\, and many others.

SUMMARY:Confluence Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Join the Academy of Natural Sciences for its third annual Confluence Film Festival. \nA month-long environmental film series held each April in celebration of Earth Month\, with screenings every Thursday evening. Presented in partnership with BlackStar Projects\, cinéSPEAK\, the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival and the Philadelphia Latino Arts & Film Festival\, Confluence 2026 showcases films that speak to this year’s theme\, “Seeding the Future.” \nWith feature-length films\, shorts and documentaries appropriate for adults\, the festival is both a call to action and a loving reminder that we don’t have to simply react to the climate crisis; we can actively shape a more just and sustainable future. Rooted in tradition\, wonder and possibility\, Confluence invites audiences to imagine what’s next. Experience this powerful film program\, hear from filmmakers\, community organizations and advocates\, and learn how you can support and imagine climate resilience for the next seven generations. \nAcademy Members receive a free Confluence tote bag. Show your membership card at check in to claim yours! \nStudents can receive $6 tickets available onsite with a valid ID.  \nThis program is supported by The Arcadia Foundation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nApril 9\n\n5:30–8:30 p.m. \nProgrammed by PAAFF (the Philadelphia Asian American Film Foundation) \n\n\n\n\n\nSchedule of Events\n5:30–6:30 p.m. Pre-screening gathering with organizational partners In Dino Hall that will include food\, music\, and advocacy organizations \n6:30–8:30 p.m. Film Program: Screening followed by Q&A \nConference of the Moths\n(2024\, 8 min)\, a short animation directed and animated by Samhita Sunya \nThe film is a 2-D paper cut-out stop-motion silhouette-animation film that is both a gentle parody and an homage to the 12th-century Persian epic poem THE CONFERENCE OF THE THE BIRDS. Drawing out classical Indo-Persian motifs of light and darkness\, of the moth and the flame\, the original epic’s Wise Hoopoe returns to once again impart lessons on love\, care\, and connection for our current day and age. \nNocturnes\n(2024\, 83 min) A documentary feature film by director Anupama Srinivasan  \nIn the dark of night\, two curious observers shine a light on this secret universe. Together\, they are on an expedition to decode these nocturnal creatures in a remote ecological “hot spot” on the border of India and Bhutan. The result is a deeply immersive film that transports audiences to a rarely seen place and urges us all to look more closely at the hidden interconnections of the natural world. \nQ&A with Samhita Sunya\, director of Conference of the Moths and Academy Entomologist Greg Cowper\, moderated by Arzhang Zafar\, PAAFF’s Festival & Programming Director

SUMMARY:Fridays in the Field
DESCRIPTION:Practice observation and nature identification in the Wagner’s Teaching Garden!\n\n\nThe Wagner’s Teaching Garden is our most valuable classroom. Not only is our green space full of pollinator gardens\, but it is also a certified Wildlife Habitat\, Bird Habitat\, and Monarch Waystation—our milkweed plants provide valuable nutrients for Monarch butterflies during their cross continental migration. \nBeginning Friday\, April 10th\, the Wagner Teaching Garden will be open for independent educational exploration every Friday from 1 – 3:00pm. \nVisitors of all ages may borrow hand lenses for close observation of our urban ecosystem\, use nature guides to help identify the different animals\, trees\, and rocks found in our yard\, or take time to relax in the shade and draw from nature. Wagner staff will be available to facilitate use of materials\, but Fridays in the Field is a mostly unguided opportunity to experience the Wagner Teaching Garden. \nVisitors looking to attend Fridays in the Field must enter the museum through the front entrance on Montgomery street and check in with the front desk. Visitors who walk-in and visitors who preregister\, here or through the 2026 Visit the Wagner Eventbrite\, will have full access to the museum and access to the yard from 1pm – 3:00pm on Fridays. \n \n\n\n\n \nThings to Know Before Your Visit\n• Walk-in visitors are welcome. Advance registration is appreciated and will speed up your entry to the museum. \n• There is no coat check or place to stow personal items – please travel light. \n• The museum is located on the second floor of the building. There are 5 steps at the entryway and a flight of stairs to access the museum. It is not wheelchair accessible. \n• To protect the specimens and our historic interiors\, photography is not allowed in the museum. Open containers of food and drink are not permitted in the building. \n•The Institute does not have a parking lot. Street parking on Montgomery Avenue and 17th Street is free. There is 2-hour free parking on Bouvier Street and on many blocks near the Wagner and metered parking on Cecil B. Moore Avenue. The nearest parking garage is at the Liacouras Center on 15th Street and Montgomery Avenue. \n \nA dream that keeps growing… \nIn 1855\, William Wagner had a dream of providing free science education to anyone who wanted to learn\, regardless of background or ability to pay. Today\, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education\, not only through the museum\, but through a wide range of courses\, lectures\, field trips\, and children’s science programs. Donations also assist us in caring for the museum and library collections and in preserving our wonderful building\, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. To learn more about what we do please visit our website. \n \nRegistration Information\nIn keeping with its original charter\, admission is free—donations are suggested to ensure the future and quality of Wagner’s free education programs and to preserve its National Landmark building and collections. \nSuggested Donations \n$25/Family \n$10/adult \n$5/student \n$0 – Wagner members \nFor any questions\, please email communications@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x17. \nIf you would like to check your membership status or become a member\, please email AbigailC@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x11.

SUMMARY:Help Preserve the Nation's History-One Document at a Time! at Parkway Central Library
DESCRIPTION:Discover how you can help deepen our understanding of American history by transcribing original post–Civil War documents. Your work will uncover stories of family\, resilience\, and community in the years following Emancipation.\nIn this Acts of Science: Connected program\, Smithsonian experts will introduce the Freedmen’s Bureau records\, explain their significance\, and share why your participation matters.
