SUMMARY:Student Week: Cyanotype Workshop with Yannick Lowery
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by ICA’s Student Board\, this year’s annual Student Week begins with a cyanotype workshop with visual artist\, Yannick Lowery.\n\n\nHosted by ICA’s Student Board\, this year’s annual Student Week begins with a cyanotype workshop with visual artist\, Yannick Lowery. \nInspired by Cheng’s interest in experimental photography from ICA’s current exhibition\, Carl Cheng: Nature Never Loses\, Lowery will teach participants how to assemble and develop unique and personal cyanotype prints. \nThis program is free and open to all Philadelphia-based college students. Please show your college ID upon registration. \n \nAbout the instructor\nYannick Lowery is an interdisciplinary artist currently residing and working in Philadelphia\, PA. Originally from New York City\, he embraces both cities as cultural and creative influences\, drawing on their rich and sociopolitical histories to fuel his practice. Yannick’s work often weaves together illustrated proverbs\, premonitions\, and historical references to guide viewers through cultural introspection and imaginative narratives. Using archival imagery and his own photography\, he engages in world-building through collage\, cyanotypes\, animation\, and sculptural pieces\, creating thought-provoking and exploratory works. \n \nAbout the exhibition\nCarl Cheng: Nature Never Loses: is the first in-depth survey of Carl Cheng’s prescient\, genre-defying work from the 1960s to the present that will transform both floors of the ICA. Cheng began his career in the experimental context of the Southern California art scene and the post-war aerospace industry\, resulting in artworks that operate at the intersection of identity\, technology\, and ecology. Over the last six decades he has worked in a variety of media to reflect on environmental change\, the relevance of art institutions to their publics\, and the role of technology in society. Because the majority of Cheng’s oeuvre is still in his possession\, the exhibition will be an exciting and rare opportunity to animate the arc of his career through a presentation of artworks that are multidisciplinary\, ephemeral\, material\, process-based\, and interactive. The exhibition will also be presented at The Contemporary Austin – Jones Center (September – December 2024)\, Bonnefanten (May – September 2025)\, and Museum Tinguely (December 2025 – May 2026). \n \nAccessibility\nICA is committed to creating a welcoming environment for all visitors. For more notes on accessibility including accessible parking nearby visit our Accessibility landing page. If you require any accessibility accommodations or have any questions about the program\, please contact Brittany Clottey (bclottey@ica.upenn.edu). \n \nSupport \nProgramming at ICA is made possible in part by the Emily and Jerry Spiegel Fund to Support Contemporary Culture and Visual Arts and the Lise Spiegel Wilks and Jeffrey Wilks Family Foundation. Public and Student Engagement at ICA is supported by the Bernstein Public Engagement Fund\, Suzanne Weiss Doft & Jacob W. Doft\, Stacey & Robert Goergen Jr.\, Hilarie L. & Mitchell Morgan\, the Nash Family Foundation\, Joline & David Stemerman\, and by Dana McDonald Strong & Mark W. Strong.

SUMMARY:How the Property Tax Abatement Revitalized Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore the lessons from Philly’s comeback story and why it should serve as a model for struggling cities across the U.S.\n\n\nOnce a struggling post-industrial city\, Philadelphia grappled with decades of economic decline\, population loss\, and a deteriorating tax base. Yet\, against the odds\, a bold policy—the 10-year property tax abatement\, first applied to commercial-to-residential conversions and later to new residential construction—ignited an urban resurgence. \nThis presentation examines how this powerful incentive revitalized neighborhoods\, attracted new residents\, and spurred private investment when other strategies failed. SUMMARY:PHILADELPHIA IN COLOR Kickstarter Launch Party
DESCRIPTION:Help us celebrate the launch of our Kickstarter for PHILADELPHIA IN COLOR\, 1950-1990!\n\n\nJoin Hidden City at Paradigm Gallery + Studio to celebrate our Kickstarter launch for PHILADELPHIA IN COLOR\, 1950-1990\, a first-of-its-kind color photographic history of Philadelphia! \nMingle with fellow Hidden City supporters\, take in the galleries\, enjoy light drinks and snacks\, and get a behind-the-scenes look at the photo research and curation process. \nWe also invite you to bring your own vintage Philly photos (or negatives or slides) to submit to the project — we can scan & digitize them for you right there on the spot! \n \nABOUT PHILADELPHIA IN COLOR: \nHidden City is working with archives\, libraries\, community organizations and amateur and professional photographers to amass photos\, slides and negatives. The book was publicly announced and opened to individual submissions in November 2024. So far over 1\,000 images have been identified for potential inclusion\, and Hidden City will continue collecting photos from the public via phillyincolor.org/submit through April 2025. \nWe have specific criteria for photos to ensure that the final images aren’t just visually compelling\, but also support our goal of illustrating what living in Philadelphia was actually like in those times. To that end\, we’re prioritizing photos of street life\, neighborhoods in transition\, slice-of-life candids\, as well as places and cultural touchstones that no longer exist today. \nSoon\, we’ll begin the process of narrowing down the photos that will make it into the book\, with input from public historians\, plus art and photography curators. In the end\, we hope to have a stunning collection of photos that will be meaningful to Philadelphians of every neighborhood and walk of life. Publication is slated for Summer 2026. \nFor more information\, visit phillyincolor.org

Coleman Jr. is an illustrator\, muralist\, fine artist\, children’s book author\, and 2D animator. His fine artwork\, geared toward adults\, focuses on evoking emotion through vibrant color\, texture\, and bold composition. Art has served as a powerful means of emotional expression for him\, particularly in environments where such expression has not always been encouraged\, especially as a Black man. It has also acted as a bridge\, connecting him with people from different backgrounds and offering perspectives that were not always accessible in his upbringing. \nCorinne Jones – Corinne Jones is a color-loving maximalist whose quirky\, bold\, and mildly inappropriate collages have been a staple of her art booth for five years. Now based in Philly\, she’s eager to create\, collaborate\, and surprise. Her love for movement shapes her designs—playful\, dynamic\, and always unexpected. Watch out—her favorite tool is a pair of scissors\, so… Cut It Out! \nKassandra Wall – Kassandra is an artist who creates oil paintings\, with her work ranging between surrealism and realism. She is inspired by space\, landscapes\, bright colors\, and the magic that can be seen in everyday life. However\, she is always up for a new and exciting challenge! Her main goal is to become the best possible version of herself while bringing out the best in others. With a dream to enhance the lives of others through artistic expression\, she aims to impact the world one project at a time. \nJah Beverly – Jah Beverly redefines masculinity through the lens of his identity as a Black trans man\, exploring themes of eroticism\, self-expression\, and autonomy. His large-scale oil paintings use vibrant colors and dynamic portraiture to center Black trans-masculine bodies\, challenging gender and racial binaries. By juxtaposing figuration against minimalist backgrounds\, he symbolizes trans identities transcending oppression. In the face of rising anti-trans legislation\, his work celebrates trans liberation\, visibility\, and resilience\, offering a powerful platform for affirmation. \nJoar Mejia – Joar Mejia looks to capture the essence of melancholy and memories through the use of different colors and film techniques. \nMINK – MINK \, a Philly-born painter\, explores the styles of neo-expressionism\, surrealism\, and figurative/ portraiture art- playing with bold colors\, brush strokes\, and figures in her works. From pen to acrylics\, MINK pieces evoke moments from joy to pain\, using color stories to push deeper narratives. But most importantly\, she is just having fun with paint \n \nFeatured Live Music\nVelvet Grüve – Velvet Grüve is an instrumental band that takes influence from all genres of music ranging from funk to metal. We believe music can oftentimes speak for itself without lyrics. Our group developed an eccentric sound through casual jam sessions that stem from our own individual explorations of music. Our mission is for everyone to have an immersive listening experience through Velvet Grüve’s affinity for sound. \n \nInterested in Showcasing Your Work?\nGermantown Art & Sound was created with the creative in mind! We are a passionate platform for artists to share and\, most importantly\, sell their work to a supportive and growing community of art lovers. Stay tuned to our Instagram page for our next call for artists! \n\n\n\nCollaborators\nOur House Culture Center – Our House is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization dedicated to providing a platform and space for artists to network\, gain exposure\, share skills and knowledge with one another. Our House hosts events\, collaborative exhibitions\, group projects\, and more on a broad range of important issues including environmental\, economic\, social and cultural sustainability through the development and leveraging of local and regional partnerships. \nVanessa Chandler – Vanessa Chandler is a Philadelphia based event planner\, nonprofit development professional and MC. She finds her passion in supporting local artists\, curating community art shows and MCing live music events. Born in Norristown PA\, Vanessa has lived in Philadelphia since attending Temple University in 2015. Vanessa holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Tourism and Hospitality Management with a focus in event leadership. \nJulian Moore-Griffin – Julian is a prolific storyteller. Whether penning articles spotlighting Philly’s Sneakers of Brotherly Love\, social justice in the city\, cultural and community happenings or capturing the city’s night life through his camera’s lens\, his thoughtful applications give his work a colorful depth and layered meaning. Check out Julian Moore-Griffin! \n\n\n\n\nAlumni Artists\nJuly 2024 – Ali Derricotte\, Arianna Cabrera\, Azella Gardens\, Jae Martin\, Kariem Young\, Lava Lamp Bebop Art\, Louis Washington & Olivia Duffy \nApril 2024 –Kashana Ricketts\, Anaz X\, Devyn Dais\, Marie Rih\, Ellis Rosenberg\, Velvet Grüve & Re-Mus \nJanuary 2024 – Salma Garcia Nolasco\, Boujee Mustard\, KrazedKai\, Kelley Prevard\, Cassidy Carter & Sanovia \nOctober 2023 – Nevaeh Ryals\, Talynn Kiara\, Cocoa Canvas\, Kenni Field\, Michael Nixon\, Velvet Grüve\, Cheri \nJuly 2023 – UNAPXLXGETIQ\, Prince De León\, Gina Taylor\, Muy Franco\, Angelle Rivera\, Steven Cooper\, Douglas Ethan\, BeGreat Bowties\, Velvet Grüve & Sabrina Pantal \nApril 2023 – Névia Da’Vesa\, ArtSoul By\, Heather Bowlan\, Shaunia Bronson\, Ayiana Viviana\, Thistle Pot & Diaja \nJanuary 2023 – Lady Vic\, Mareshet Johnson\, Jahnea Pressley\, Rhapsody by Rae\, Destiny Crockett & Judy Ha \nOctober 2022 – Mason Carter\, Keisha Whatley & Tony Woodbury \nSeptember 2022 – Dayja Chaney\, Keshida Layone \, Timothy Willis & Julian Moore-Griffin \nAugust 2022 – Chelsey Luster\, Daphne Smallwood\, Anthony Johnson & CJ
