SUMMARY:Native Alternatives to Invasive Ornamentals
DESCRIPTION:Non-native invasive plants\, like Japanese barberry and English ivy\, damage our environment by invading natural areas and outcompeting native plants. To help stop the spread\, the Delaware state legislature recently passed a law banning the sale of 36 invasive plant species. Join Leah Brooks as she presents beautiful native alternatives to these invasive ornamentals and explains how making these substitutes helps protect our ecosystems. A garden walk to view recommended plants is included.\nThis program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center on Friday\, July 19\, 2024.\nAbout the Instructor:\nLeah Brooks is the Public Programs Coordinator at Mt. Cuba Center. She has dual bachelor’s degrees from the University of Delaware in Environmental Science and Wildlife Ecology. She is a Delaware Master Naturalist and Vice Chair of the Delaware Invasive Species Council. She’s an avid contributor to the Delaware Native Plant Identification and Exchange group on Facebook. Explore the history and collections of the Wagner with a guided tour!\n\n\nSummer Fridays!\nGuided Tour of the Wagner – Rocks & Minerals\nJoin us on Friday afternoons this summer for guided tours of the Wagner – each week will highlight a different part of the collection!\n \nThe Wagner Free Institute of Science is a National Historic Landmark natural history museum\, with more than 100\,000 specimens on display in its historic Exhibition Hall. \nEvery specimen in the collection has its own story to tell. There are smaller stories of how each specimen arrived at the Wagner and larger stories about evolution\, religion\, and humans’ place in the universe. This guided tour offers a special opportunity to learn more about our specimens\, why the exhibit hall is arranged the way it is\, and how our museum reflects social and intellectual histories of the 19th and 20th centuries. \nEach week\, the tour will begin in the Lecture Hall with a presentation on the founding and history of the Wagner\, followed by a guided tour of the museum that will highlight the architecture of the building and some of the specimens on display. This week will feature Rocks & Minerals – the Wagner has one of the largest mineral displays in the region!  \nAfter the tour\, you can continue to explore our historic site and museum collections\, including minerals\, fossils\, shells\, insects\, taxidermy birds and mammals. Themed scavenger hunts\, drawing or coloring activities are available to guide you. Stop by our gift shop and pick up a geode to crack open\, polished crystals for your collection\, a vintage tea towel or your own copy of Historic Landmarks of Philadelphia–which features the Wagner! \nThe guided tour runs from 2:30 to 3:30 pm. All ages are welcome but the recommended age is 12 and up. \nTickets are not required to visit the museum but if you’d like to speed up your entry\, sign up HERE. Advance registration for the guided tour reserves your place on the tour. Please register on this page. Sign-up will be available on the day of the tour if space is available. \nGuided tour tickets are $20 for adults\, $15 for members and seniors\, $10 for students. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special presentation of a performance and screening celebrating contemporary Japanese video artists with cinéSPEAK. \nABOUT THE PROGRAM \nCommunity of Images: Japanese Moving Image Artists in the US\, 1960s-1970s is an exhibition that explores experimental moving images created by Japanese artists and their connections to North America. Covering a wide range of practices and themes; including avant-garde film\, performance\, design and healing\, ecology\, expanded cinema\, independent documentary\, music\, race\, feminism\, video art\, community-based video\, technology and communication\, and others\, the project features works and activities that took place in Japan and in the U.S. \nAs part of the public engagement programming for the exhibition\, we will be presenting the 1983 Video Letter\, a remarkable 64-minute compilation exchange of video letters that took place between video artists Shuji Terayama and Shuntaro Tanikawa in the months immediately preceding Terayama’s death. The Video Letter can be thought of as a home video produced by two preeminent poets and interlaid with highly abstract philosophizing\, slightly aberrant behavior\, and occasionally flamboyant visuals. \nIn homage to the original 1983 Video Letter\, CCJ and JASGP commissioned a group of four contemporary video artists to produce a new video letter exchange as part of the Community of Images exhibition. Two of the artists are U.S.-based (Nadia Hironaka\, Philadelphia\, and Shinpei Takeda\, San Diego)\, with two others based in Japan (Hikaru Suzuki\, Tokyo and Yu Araki\, Kyoto). \nUnlike the original video\, the videos were anonymized during the exchange that took place between February – May 2024. This screening will be the first world premiere screening.

DESCRIPTION:Using nothing but reeds\, cane and wood handles we will construct our own baskets.\n\n\nWith instructor Cassie Jones we will be construction baskets using nothing but lengths of dry reeds and wooden handles.  \nMeet up at Cassie’s studio 14 on the second floor of Cherry Street Studio and we will pick out our materials and discuss the process of weaving three dimensionally. Depending on the weather we can take our basket materials and buckets of water to assemble our projects outside in the garden area\, or across the way at Race Street Pier. \nThe Location: This event is held at The Craft Coven’s space in Cherry Street Pier. We are located in studio 14 on the second floor. Unfortunately there are no elevators to the second floor. You will need to go up a very large flight of steps to get to the second floor. The space is heated/cooled inside the pier and there are bathrooms located on site (on the first floor). There are often installations and events around the pier\, and the larger space is open from 12-9pm everyday.
