SUMMARY:Virtual Toad Detour Training Session
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to protect our toads! Toad Detour protects the local toad population as they migrate to and from their breeding grounds each spring. When the toads emerge from brumation (the reptile version of hibernation) in early spring\, hundreds of them cross Port Royal\, Hagy’s Mill and other nearby roads to mate in the Roxborough Reservoir or the Schuylkill Center’s ponds. On select nights\, when the conditions are just right\, Toad Detour volunteers erect barricades and help divert traffic during busy toad crossing evenings\, saving hundreds of toads. \nSign up to receive a link to the Zoom meeting. \nWant to be included in all Toad Detour news? Join the Facebook group or send an email to volunteer@schuylkillcenter.org to stay in the loop.

SUMMARY:Film Screening Hosted by Danny Simmons - The United States of Hoodoo by Oliver Hardt
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening of The United States of Hoodoo\, hosted by Danny Simmons\, in conjunction with the exhibition Dolls\, Idols\, and Ideals. \nThe United States of Hoodoo tracks the spiritual roots that have shaped the American Black experience\, offering perspective on the interconnectedness of culture and identity. Written and directed by Oliver Hardt\, the documentary traces the influence of African religious traditions on American art\, music\, and popular culture. The film engages viewers with insightful interviews featuring a diverse array of artists\, musicians\, and practitioners of African-based religions. \nDanny Simmons\, an artist and one of the main interviewees featured in the film\, will host the screening at the InLiquid Gallery. Simmons will introduce the film and lead a discussion with the audience. Doors will open at 5.45 and the screening will begin at 6.10. \nDolls\, Idols\, and Ideals features Kimberly Camp and Emilio Maldonado\, two Black artists investigating their identity\, label\, lineage\, and how they create their own power while stranded in a “new world.” Camp and Maldonado use symbols – made or found – that reference their ancestry and spirituality. Rather than working from a notion of unchanging traditions\, they engage with aesthetics and amalgamated cultural practices that have been adapted in order to survive. Each artist finds strength\, magic\, and power in these resilient elements\, in full embrace of their individual and shared heritages.

SUMMARY:Andrew Wyeth's Botanical Imagination
DESCRIPTION:Attend this session to learn all about Brandywine Museum of Art’s newest exhibition with Dr. William L. Coleman ’07 Haverford College.\n\n\nThis illustrated talk will give a behind-the-scenes look at a new exhibition at the Brandywine Museum of Art that will be of particular interest to friends of the Haverford College Arboretum. Every Leaf & Twig: Andrew Wyeth’s Botanical Imagination brings together a remarkable group of watercolors\, most never before exhibited\, that reflect the way this uniquely place-based American artist responded to individual specimens of southeastern Pennsylvania’s plant life. Not as a botanical illustrator but as an art historically literate visionary\, Andrew Wyeth found in the ordinary plant life of Chadds Ford a point of departure for remarkable creations. \n \nDr. William L. Coleman ’07 is Wyeth Foundation Curator and Director of the Andrew & Betsy Wyeth Study Center at the Brandywine Museum of Art\, with additional oversight of staff and collections at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Maine. After Haverford\, where he is a member of the Corporation and an occasional alumni interviewer for Admissions\, he earned two master’s degrees in the UK\, a doctorate from Berkeley\, and fellowships from the NEH and Smithsonian. He writes\, teaches\, and curates exhibitions centering on the landscape art of the United States. \n \n Andrew Wyeth\, Buttonwood\, Study for The Hunter\, 1943. Drybrush watercolor on paper\, 19 ½ x 29 ½ in. Collection of the Wyeth Foundation for American Art\, B0575R. © Wyeth Foundation for American Art/Artists Rights Society (ARS)\, New York\, 2024 \nParking can be found in our visitor parking lot and participants will meet for this presentation in VCAM 001.
