SUMMARY:The Culture of Stuff
DESCRIPTION:Everyday people are making and buying things. The world around you is made up of these things. But what do these things say about us?\n\n\nEveryday people are making and buying things. \nThe world around you is made up of these things. But what do these things say about us? And what will these things say about you and your culture one hundred years from now? \nThe Culture of Stuff is an introduction to the study of Material Culture. \nBarry Rauhauser takes a look at how objects provide us with clues about how the people of the past viewed the world around them. \nBarry Rauhauser is the Executive Director of the Historical Society of Montgomery County where he hopes to have an impact on the public’s appreciation of history and their desire to preserve and use local history. Barry is also an avid bicyclist and photographer and frequently stops along his bike rides to photograph old cemeteries and houses. \nProgram Sponsored by the Friends of the Ambler Branch Library

It’s easy to learn\, fun to do\, and a safe way to help out.\n\n\nJoin us this month as we celebrate FABSCRAP’s 7th Anniversary! For seven years we have been providing recycling and reuse solutions for our partner brands and creative communities locally and nationwide. We have reached this milestone with the contribution of our wonderful volunteers. We are sending monthly invites to become a Reuse Volunteer to those who have volunteered 10 or more times! Reuse Volunteers help process materials in our Reuse bins after they leave the initial sorting table. It’s a great opportunity to understand the deconstruction of sample garments\, what types of items are donatable or mendable\, and how materials are processed for reuse or recyclability. We monitor our Eventbrite registrations closely. If you think you may have completed 10 sorting sessions and did not receive an invitation to sign up\, let us know at volunteer@fabscrap.org using the email you register for sessions with. \nPlease read below for additional information on volunteering\, including other changes at the FABSCRAP Philly warehouse due to COVID-19. \n— \nWhat to expect: \n\nWelcome: Intros and overview of FABSCRAP (10 minutes)\nTraining: Learn how FABSCRAP sorts fabric for recycling (15 minutes)\nSort: Sort through fabric samples and large pieces\, pulling out usable fabrics for reuse and removing hardware and paper from fabric swatches for recycling (~2.5 hours)\nShop for fabric! SUMMARY:Second Thursday Gallery Nights at The Clay Studio - Resident Artist Exhibitions Closing
DESCRIPTION:Every Second Thursday of the month\, The Clay Studio joins Crane Arts and NextFab in Second Thursday Gallery Nights\, where galleries along the North American Street Arts Corridor are open late to highlight the neighborhood’s creative community. At The Clay Studio\, visitors can take a guided tour of the latest exhibition and participate in a free art-making activity. \nOn September 14\, The Clay Studio celebrates the solo exhibitions of Resident Artists Ruth Easterbrook\, Chris M. Rodgers\, and Stephanie Kantor. During this special event\, guests will have the opportunity to join some of the artists on a tour of the three exhibitions at 6:30 p.m. and ask questions about the work. The work of Easterbrook\, Rodgers\, and Kantor show the range and depth of meaning achievable by artists who have virtuosic technical skills and a grasp of the metaphor possible when working with clay as their medium. \nVisitors can also participate in a free Hands-On Clay Workshop project appropriate for all ages sponsored by PNC Arts Alive. Projects will be fired at the studio and available for pick up approximately three weeks later.

SUMMARY:Second Thursday at NextFab: Repair Fair
DESCRIPTION:We will be welcoming the Philly Fixers Guild’s Repair Fair back to our spaces to help you fix and repair\, fix\, and assemble your tricky items. Why replace it when you can repair it? This urban volunteer repair outfit will help you fix your stuff\, free of charge\, and they’re ready for the challenge. Got tangled jewelry\, IKEA furniture that needs assembling\, or a vacuum cleaner that’s on the fritz? Sit down with one of their volunteers and they’ll help you hands-on with fixing it. While they do have some limits\, they encourage a read of their ground rules before bringing in your items. Reserve a spot here. \nGuidelines: \nTheir talented volunteer fixers love the challenge of repairing everyday things. However\, we have some limits and guidelines so things can run a bit more smoothly: \n\nGuests are required to stay with their item and participate in the repair (dropping an item off for them to work on defeats the purpose of the Repair Fair)\nIf you already know your item needs a particular replacement part\, order it early and bring it with you to the fair\nAs long as you can carry the item in\, we will do our best to get it repaired\nThere will\, of course\, be some things that cannot reasonably be fixed or might need a part ordered. In these cases\, a fixer will recommend the best course of action. Usually\, they will be able to supply you with info on part numbers and repair steps so you can complete the repair at home on your own!\n\nCan’t make it to the Repair Fair? They don’t want you to miss out on repairing your favorite possessions! For that reason\, their “ASK A FIXER” email link can be used with details of your broken item. A Fixer can then offer some advice and guidance on how to make the repairs on your own time. \nDisclaimer: The Philly Fixers Guild exists to help people repair their personal items and educate the community in general troubleshooting\, diagnosis\, and repair. The guild volunteers are not necessarily professionals or licensed in any way. Any repair work undertaken at a fair is done as a “Good Samaritan” effort and is for educational purposes only. No repair made at a Repair Fair carries any warranty\, promise of reliability\, or guarantee of safety. \nRolling tours of NextFab will be available\, and light drinks and refreshments will be served. \nWhat are Second Thursdays? \nFor 17 years\, the Crane Arts Building has hosted monthly art exhibitions\, performances\, and openings on the Second Thursday of every month. Similar to First Fridays in Old City\, but not wanting to compete\, Second Thursdays was created to highlight the creative community of the North Philadelphia neighborhood – and well it stuck! \nAmerican St. is becoming a booming street for artists\, makers\, and creatives of all types\, and we invite you to come out to be a part of this. Between the Crane Arts Building and the Clay Studio\, the NextFab building at 1800 North houses eight businesses that will also be opening their doors on the second Thursday of every month. At 1800 N. American St. the creative work ranges from restoring historic neon\, sourcing salvaged materials\, empowering artists\, building bicycles\, supporting artisan businesses\, a gorgeous floral market\, and a restaurant mixing up amazing cocktails. All are welcome to this open house-style event! \nWhile at the 1800 N. American St. building be sure to check out our neighbors:\n\nThe Resource Exchange\nSor Ynez\nKeystone Bicycle Co\nBeaty American Salvage\nCenter for Creative Works
