SUMMARY:Black Harvest Dinner
DESCRIPTION:FarmerJawn’s “Black Harvest Dinner Series” series celebrates black foodways in all their facets!\n\n\nFarmerJawn presents The “Black Harvest” Dinner Series \nThe “Black Harvest” Dinner Series is a remarkable exploration of American farming history\, highlighting the often silenced narratives of black farmers whose land was unjustly taken. Over the past century\, the number of Black-owned farms has significantly declined\, from approximately one million in the early 1900s to only about 30\,000 in 2023. This series celebrates black foodways in all their facets\, from dedicated growers to ingenious product makers\, showcasing the incredible creations brought to life by Black creators. \nFarmerJawn is committed to advancing sustainable agriculture and education\, proudly being the sole Black-owned regenerative organic vegetable grower in the United States\, situated right here in Philadelphia! FarmerJawn’s regenerative and organic farm covers more than 123 acres\, making it the only farm of its kind in the nation led by a Black woman. Your involvement not only enriches the culinary experience but also contributes to promoting equity among farmers. \nOur inaugural event is a special collaboration with Cheyney University\, a pioneer in African-American higher education. As the first historically Black university\, Cheyney holds a unique place in history. Join us as we honor this institution’s legacy while celebrating the rich tapestry of Black agriculture and culinary innovation. This promises to be an inspiring\, informative\, and delightful journey that will illuminate the past\, celebrate the present\, and inspire the future of Black agriculture and food production. \n \n\n\nIn line with our dedication to making a meaningful impact\, a portion of the ticket sales will be allocated to support the Cheyney Hotel\, Restaurant & Tourism Management department. When you purchase a ticket\, you’ll not only contribute to this important cause but also receive a $100 credit toward a CSA subscription with FarmerJawn\, underscoring our commitment to sustainable agriculture.

SUMMARY:Little Sit: Accessible for All Birdwatching
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an inclusive birding event that celebrates diversity and birdability! \n\n\nDATE\nSunday\, October 22\, 2023 \n\n\n\nTIME\n8:00am – 11:00am \n\n\n\nLOCATION\nFairmount Park Horticulture Center\n100 N. Horticulture Dr.\nPhiladelphia\, PA 19131 \n\n\n\nFairmount Park Conservancy is thrilled to partner with In Color Birding Club\, Feminist Bird Club Philly\, Pennsylvania Center for Adapted Sports (PCAS)\, and Philly Queer Birders for a special morning of birding on October 22 from 8:00–11:00 AM. This event is intentionally accessible to BIPOC\, the LGBTQ+ community\, and those with disabilities. \nBirders seek out diversity in birds\, looking for an array of colors\, sizes\, ages\, origins\, etc. Thankfully\, there’s a movement underway among birders to similarly celebrate diversity in our fellow humans. All are welcome! We encourage people with all skill levels to attend (even if you have never been birding). \nHalloween costumes are welcome! You’re welcome to show up at any time between 8:00–11:00 AM and stay for as long or as short as you want. We’ll have a few light snacks and encourage people to bring outside chairs\, picnic blankets\, or anything that will make you comfortable spending a morning birding in one location (rather than walking). We’ll have name tags where you can write your name and pronouns if you want so you can easily meet other birding friends. After all\, birds of a feather flock together! \nAccessibility notes are listed in the ‘Know Before You Go’ and ‘Parking/Getting There’ sections below; however\, if you have any other questions\, requests\, or needs\, please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org. \nWHAT IS A “LITTLE SIT”? \nThe Little Sit is our answer to a typically day-long\, stationary birding event called a “big sit\,” where groups try to see as many birds in one location as possible. It’s also a departure from our normal format of taking a bird hike where a lot of terrain is covered and we go to the birds. Instead\, with the Little Sit\, we find a stationary position and let the birds come to us! \nAbout Partner Organizations \n\nIn Color Birding Club is an organization founded in 2021 to make the birding experience a positive one for BIPOC folks and their allies. This includes: organizing inclusive events\, giving back to underserved communities of color\, and inspiring youth.\nPhilly Queer Birders started in March 2021 as a way to create queer community\, learn about our feathered friends\, and explore all the great birding that Philadelphia has to offer. They typically meet up monthly and have held events at FDR Park\, John Heinz NWR\, The Woodlands\, and more.\nFeminist Bird Club was founded by Molly Adams in 2016 as a way to leverage both their passion for birds and their passion for social justice into a cohesive whole. Since then\, the Feminist Bird Club has expanded to chapters across North America and in the Netherlands.\nPennsylvania Center for Adapted Sports has been a leader in providing adapted sports to persons with disabilities for decades. Administered from its office on Boathouse Row\, PCAS currently operates 13 sport and wellness programs year-round\, with a focus on building inclusive communities with barrier-free and supportive settings.\n\n\nTICKET PRICES: This event is FREE\, but we do ask that you RSVP so we can send pre-event info. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nCome anytime between 8:00–11:00 AM and stay as long or as short as you’d like.\nThere are ADA-accessible bathrooms inside the Horticulture Center. Enter via the ramp on the parking lot side of the building\, marked on this map.\nBYOB – as in\, please bring your own binoculars. If you don’t have any\, no problem! We will have about 35 pairs of binoculars on hand to borrow. You can also bring your own bird book or download an identification app such as Merlin.\nAppropriate for all\, including families with children! Minors must be accompanied by a guardian.\nThis is a fully outdoor event so please dress according to weather conditions.\nPlease bring your own water (drinking water is not available in the park).\nBring sunscreen and bug spray.\nFriendly dogs on a leash are welcome.\nHalloween costumes are welcome!\n\n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: We will be located in the backside of the building. If driving in from Horticultural Drive\, there are accessible parking spaces in the front and around the back of the building. There is also plenty of parking (including accessible parking spaces) available in the large lot marked on this map. As always\, NEVER leave valuables in your car! SEPTA Bus 38 (in both directions) drops off at Belmont Avenue near the Horticulture Center\, also marked on the map. \n\nQUESTIONS? Please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org \n

SUMMARY:Discover Strawberry Mansion: Neighborhood and East Park
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the past\, present and future of Strawberry Mansion and nearby East Park. \n\n\nDATE\nSunday\, October 22\, 2023 \n\n\n\nTIME\n10:00am – 12:30pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION\nBoxers’ Trail Gateway\n3336 W. Dauphin Drive\nPhiladelphia\, 19132 \n\n\n\nJoin the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Judith Robinson on October 22 from 10:00 AM–12:30 PM for a 2.5-mile walking tour to learn about the past\, present\, and future of Strawberry Mansion and nearby East Park. \nStrawberry Mansion has always had a close connection to the park. In fact\, the neighborhood is named after a prominent place in the park\, Historic Strawberry Mansion. Similar to Parkside on the other side of the Schuylkill\, Strawberry Mansion is where the city grid meets the greenspace\, buffered by a boulevard of grand homes and apartment buildings facing the park. It’s a neighborhood that has lived many lives through the years\, from its beginnings as an 18th-century rural retreat\, to its 19th-century industrial boom with a proliferation of factories and rowhouses\, to the 20th-century that experienced a demographic shift from a primarily Jewish enclave to an established African-American community. Judith will highlight the neighborhood’s history as a hub of cultural activity – the home to artists such as Henry Ossawa Tanner and Dox Thrash\, musicians such as John Coltrane and Meek Mill\, and community groups such as Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club\, the horse riders who inspired the hit movie Concrete Cowboy. \nThe tour begins with the colonial homes that first defined the area and then visits a variety of important park sites such as the Dell Music Center\, the Medicine Man statue\, the old concession stand\, and the recently installed horseshoe pits. Next\, Judith will lead us down 33rd Street\, East Park’s parkside promenade to see B’nai Jeshurun Synagogue/Cornerstone Baptist Church\, Mander Recreation Center\, and the John Coltrane house. The tour will end at a relatively new addition to the park and neighborhood\, The Discovery Center at the Strawberry Mansion Reservoir. \nEstimated distance: about 2.5 miles\nLevel: easy to moderate\nTerrain: mainly flat sidewalks/trails \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Judith Robinson is a longtime resident\, historic preservationist\, and real estate broker with years of experience as a community advocate and educator. She is a researcher and docent at the Historic Church of the Advocate and is the director of the Strawberry Mansion Civic Association. In 2021\, Judith helped form the Friends of The Henry O. Tanner House\, an all-volunteer group of local African-American preservation advocates who are spearheading efforts to save the North Philadelphia rowhouse of this significant American painter. \n\nTICKET PRICES: Pay what you can – $10\, $15\, or $20\n[ Not sure what to pay? Please refer to this Sliding Scale Pricing FAQ for additional info. ] \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nAppropriate for adults and families with children ages 12 & up. Minors must be registered and accompanied by an adult.\nPlease wear comfortable shoes.\nPlease dress according to weather conditions.\nPlease bring your own water and snacks (drinking water is not available in the park).\nWell-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome; however\, you will not be able to enter buildings.\nThere are bathrooms (porta-potties) available at the beginning and end of the tour route.\n\n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: There is plenty of free parking available in the park. As always\, never leave valuables in your car! If traveling by public transit\, the closest station is at 33rd and Dauphin. The nearest Indego bike station is also at 33rd and Dauphin. \n\nQUESTIONS? Please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org \n

SUMMARY:Divine Seeds
DESCRIPTION:Led by Tiny Farm Wagon / part of Teaching at the End of Times\n\n\nDivine Seeds led by Tiny Farm Wagon \nIn her essay\, “Rootedness: The Ancestors as Foundation”\, Writer Toni Morrison argued that because Black people were disregarded\, our ways of knowing were disregarded. Because Black life is often depicted as pathological\, we create rituals to honor the wellness practices inherent in Black culture. Join Tiny Farm Wagon for seed planting and collage activities. We’ll put our hands in the soil\, set intentions\, and create art with quotes from Black self-help/wellness gurus\, and images from Black culture\, Black history\, and nature. \nWater and snacks will be provided during the event and food will be served towards the end of the workshop. \nRead more about Teaching at the End of Times and the workshop leader \nSee the full schedule of related events here

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Our Fragile Moment by Michael Mann
DESCRIPTION:A discussion about Michael Mann’s new book\, Our Fragile Moment: How Lesson’s from Earth’s Past Can Help Us Survive the Climate Crisis\n\n\nA rapidly warming climate is driving natural catastrophes. Drought\, fire\, sea level rise\, heatwaves\, flooding\, and storms threaten the wellbeing of people all around the world. As the dangers unfold\, global warming becomes a lived experience\, and it feels too late to act. \nIn his new book\, Our Fragile Moment\, Michael Mann turns this climate doomism on its head by looking to Earth’s history for inspiration. Humanity’s inception\, and some of its greatest innovations\, are the result of large-scale environmental change. He writes about how this era of global warming can hold these same opportunities for creative growth – that is\, if we act now. \nHow can the climate crisis be leveraged to propel humanity forward? Why must we act now\, in this fragile moment? What is stopping us? Join Michael Mann as he answers these critical questions and discusses the premise of his book with Bloomberg Science journalist Faye Flam. \n\n\nSPEAKERS\nMichael E. Mann is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania\, with a secondary appointment in the Annenberg School for Communication. He is director of the Penn Center for Science\, Sustainability\, and the Media. Mann received his undergraduate degrees in Physics and Applied Math from the University of California at Berkeley\, an M.S. degree in Physics from Yale University\, and a Ph.D. in Geology & Geophysics from Yale University. His research interests include the study of Earth’s climate system and the science\, impacts and policy implications of human-caused climate change. \nMann is author of more than 200 peer-reviewed and edited publications\, numerous op-eds and commentaries\, and six books including Dire Predictions: Understanding Climate Change\, The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars: Dispatches from the Front Lines\, The Madhouse Effect: How Climate Change Denial is Threatening our Planet\, Destroying Our Politics\, and Driving Us Crazy\, The Tantrum that Saved the World\, The New Climate War: The Fight to Take Back Our Planet\, and Our Fragile Moment: How Lessons from Earth’s Past Can Help Us Survive the Climate Crisis. \nMODERATOR\nJournalist Faye Flam has been from the rocky fringes of Greenland to the mountaintops of Haiti to the South Pole to capture stories about science and the natural world. She earned a degree in geophysics from the California Institute of Technology\, where she learned about global warming and the need to explain the threat to the general public. She started her science journalism career as an intern for The Economist before becoming a staff writer for Science Magazine covering particle physics and cosmology. Her desire to reach the wider public brought her to the Philadelphia Inquirer where she covered science and created a weekly column about evolution. She’s currently a columnist for Bloomberg Opinion\, where she’s able to add critical evaluation and context to scientific advances. In 2020 she won a Pulliam fellowship from the Society for Professional Journalists\, which came with a grant she used to create a podcast called Follow the Science. The weekly episodes examined the pandemic and posed questions about what to believe in a world where so much that’s labelled “science” is either pseudoscientific\, fraudulent\, distorted by the media or just plain wrong.
