SUMMARY:The Release Oasis: A Multi-Sensory Experience of Movement & Sound
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for an Evening of Release with Yoga\, Sound Therapy\, Fire Ceremony & Tribal Ecstatic Dance\n\n\nThis is the 2nd installment of The Release Oasis\, an event in the dome at Life Do Grow Farm (Urban Creators). Come release anything that is no longer serving you through the modalities of movement & sound. This will be a 4-hour experience that will include a yoga flow by Adonis\, a multiple player sound bath experience featuring James & Kuan\, a journaling/fire release ceremony\, and a tribal themed ecstatic dance party by DJ Pierre Paloma to enhance the energy of releasing through movement. \nAdonis Rosario is a multi-faceted healer. From holistic health coaching to yoga teacher\, he helps many with finding the tools within themselves and guiding them to healing. Adonis will lead an asana (yoga movement) practice to loosen everyone up and transition into a meditation before immersing everyone in sacred sound vibrations. \nJames Lamar is a certified sound bath facilitator and recording artist in Philadelphia\, PA. He is certified by sound healer Ana Netanel of Shakti Sound Bath in Los Angeles\, CA. James is the product of a talented bassist\, guitarist\, and musician of a father & a soul music loving mother who taught him harmony when he was 5 years old. His musical talents led him to the All Eastern Chorus\, studying music at Temple\, and having his own original music released on all streaming platforms. Since his sound bath certification in the summer of 2019\, James has shared these sacred frequencies in multiple spaces around Los Angeles\, Northeastern PA\, and Philadelphia. James’ debut meditation single is available everywhere\, “Meditative Soundscape: Crystal Singing Bowls”. \nKuan Young is a Philadelphia native\, who is known for being an artist\, artisan and business owner. Kuan has studied the science & power of sound\, which he now uses to heal himself\, his family\, underserved communities\, and individuals seeking vibrational guidance. Kuan attended the University of the Arts where he curated several public events. He owned a wellness center\, Sol Garden Studio\, where he offered various wellness practices to the city. Currently\, Kuan is giving back through his non-profit organization\, “The Garden Godfather\, Inc.” where he provides environmental awareness & social justice to youth\, adults\, and elders alike. Kuan is a featured sound healer. \nPierre “Paloma” Nix is unique in the fact that he is both a DJ and percussionist. His sound is a hybrid of his acoustic drumming with international grooves\, hip-hop soul\, and dancefloor fillers. When he is not creating his own music\, he is a part of the Philadelphia-based music collective Worldtown Soundsystem.

Vibrational healing is the ancient art of healing with sound; it traces back to ancient Egypt & Tibet. Sound vibrations can heal the physical body at a cellular level by adjusting blockages and imbalances. These imbalances can cause the body to have a slower frequency vibration which may lead to dis-ease or illnesses. Natural healing sound frequencies can be transferred or introduced externally or directly into the body to create a more harmonious state.\n \n \nAt Black Lotus\, we combine the use of crystal chakra singing bowls\, gongs\, tuning forks\, and more to give a relaxing & transformative experience. We can balance chakras\, repair auras\, uplift the mood or help with grounding. Vibrational healing is a great tool for meditation\, alleviating stress\, and relaxing stiff or sore muscles.\n \n \nFor more visit: www.diasporaeducationalservices.org/black-lotus\n \n \nhttps://linktr.ee/blacklotushhc \n\n\n\nDIRECTIONS: \nBlack Lotus is not on Lincoln Drive despite the address…it is actually on Rittenhousetown Lane. SUMMARY:The Wissahickon in August with Debbie Hoellein\, Andi Wingert & Jim McClory
DESCRIPTION:Meet at Arrow Athletic Field Parking Lot\, Magdalena Street and Walnut Lane \nJoin Andi\, Jim\, and Debbie as we hike the Wissahickon in August. We last did this hike in February when the temperature was in the mid 40s and some plants were just starting to bud. Now instead of vistas\, we will have lots of native and non-native plants to observe. And we will need to see Toleration up close instead of from across the creek. We expect to hear birds\, although it will be more difficult to see them. Besides visiting one of the 3 statues in Wissahickon Valley Park \, we will see other points of historical interest as we walk over and under 3 bridges. \nThis hike is about 3.5 miles and there are some rocky ascents and descents. There is parking in the lot across from the clubhouse of the Walnut Lane Golf Club on Magdalena Street. Children 12 years of age and older are welcome when accompanied by an adult\, but please\, no dogs except for service animals. \nDistance: ~3.5 miles \nLevel: Difficult (many inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces) \nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Walks are canceled in heavy rain. Service animals are always welcome. For more information\, contact Claire Brennan at brennan@fow.org. Visit www.fow.org for updates.

SUMMARY:FABSCRAP PHL Volunteer Session: Tuesday\, August 29\, PM session
DESCRIPTION:FABSCRAP needs your help to save designer textiles from landfills! It’s easy to learn\, fun to do\, and a safe way to help out.\n\n\nFABSCRAP Philly needs your help to save designer textiles from landfill! This month\, volunteers will participate in our Header Research Project! Participants will sort through fabric samples and swatches\, separating fabric from paper headers and folding large\, usable fabric to be saved for reuse. Volunteers will do this while also completing a survey. The survey will be used to record different header/packaging types that will help us rank companies by least to most sustainable packaging. \nWhen registering\, choose: \n\nFirst Time Volunteer Sorter if this is your first time volunteering with us\nReturn Volunteer Sorter if you’ve sorted with us before\n\nNote: If you choose to donate\, please make sure that you also choose a sorter ticket. \nFABSCRAP Philly is committed to keeping our volunteers\, community\, and team safe: \n\nAll visitors are encouraged to wear a mask in the FABSCRAP warehouse.\nVolunteer stations are comfortably spaced apart for individual use (unless you opt to share with a friend)\nCleaning and sanitizing of volunteer stations and frequently touched surfaces will take place between all volunteer sessions.\nThe FABSCRAP team will be wearing masks.\nHand sanitizer is available.\nWe ask that volunteers cancel their session and stay home if they are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms including fever\, cough\, and/or gastrointestinal issues (see additional info from the CDC). Additionally\, please cancel your session and stay home if you have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or had direct contact with an individual diagnosed with or suspected to have COVID-19 in the past 14 days.\n\nThank you for being part of our work and mission! When you sign up\, please consider donating to keep us operational as a sustainable resource – FABSCRAP is the only option available for the fashion industry to recycle and redistribute unused material\, and the most accessible way for consumers to find saved-from-landfill fabric\, trim\, leather\, and yarn. \nWant to get more involved? We are sending monthly invites to become a Reuse Volunteer to those who have volunteered 10 or more times! Reuse Volunteers help process materials in our Reuse bins after they leave the initial sorting table. It’s a great opportunity to understand the deconstruction of sample garments\, what types of items are donatable or mendable\, and how materials are processed for reuse or recyclability. We monitor our Eventbrite registrations closely. If you think you may have completed 10 sorting sessions and did not receive an invitation to sign up\, let us know at volunteer@fabscrap.org using the email you register for sessions with. \nPlease read below for additional information on volunteering\, including other changes at the FABSCRAP Philly warehouse due to COVID-19. \n— \nWhat to expect: \n\nWelcome: Intros and overview of FABSCRAP (10 minutes)\nTraining: Learn how FABSCRAP sorts fabric for recycling (15 minutes)\nSort: Sort through fabric samples and large pieces\, pulling out usable fabrics for reuse and removing hardware and paper from fabric swatches for recycling (~2.5 hours)\nShop for fabric! (1 hour)\n\n***Sorting fabric requires the use of sharp scissors and moderate lifting (20-30 lbs). By registering for a session\, you are confirming that you have read\, understand\, and agree to the volunteer waiver.*** \n***Volunteer Waver Link Here: https://fabscrap.org/volunteerwaiver*** \nTips for a successful volunteer session: \n\nDress comfortably and wear comfortable shoes as most volunteers sort while standing; we can provide chairs if you prefer to sit\nBring your own bag to carry home any material you shop for!\nWe play music\, but feel free to bring headphones\nFeel free to bring water or beverages with a cap/lid; there are also vending machines in the building\nAs the weather gets cooler\, windows will only be open for ventilation depending on the outside temperature\nPlease be sure to register for every session you plan to attend\, and if you are unable to attend – especially if you are showing symptoms of COVID-19\, have been diagnosed with COVID-19\, or had direct contact with an individual diagnosed with or suspected to have COVID-19 in the past 14 days – cancel your ticket so that others may sign up for your space\n\nAs a thank-you for completing a 3-hour volunteer session\, we’re happy to: \n\nGive you 5 pounds of fabric for FREE and a 30% volunteer discount on any additional material you’d like to purchase… OR\nWaive the fee for recycling personal sewing scraps\, up to 10 pounds… OR\nSign a community service form\n\n***FABSCRAP does not accept used garments or home linens for recycling.*** \nTHESE DIRECTIONS ARE IMPORTANT: \nThe FABSCRAP Philly warehouse is located in Unit 601 within BOK\, which is accessible by foot\, bike/scooter\, car\, subway\, and bus. \nSUBWAY: Broad Street Line to Snyder Station \nBUS: 45\, 47\, 47M\, 79 Lines \nBIKE: Approach BOK’s Pedestrian Entrance on 821 Dudley Street\, between 8th and 9th Street. SUMMARY:Sugar Don't Go on Grits
DESCRIPTION:Sugar Don’t Go on Grits: An Archival Look at The Great Migration’s Effect on How We Eat\n\n\nHow Black is sweet cornbread? Do WE put marshmallows on sweet potato casserole? “Sugar Don’t Go On Grits: An Archival Look at The Great Migration’s Effect on How We Eat” will be a conversational space dedicated to retracing the divergent pathways of the African American culinary tradition. Leaning on archival materials\, we’ll highlight how Black people altered recipes in different areas of the United States due to the availability of ingredients and to match local tastes while reflecting on how these changes have led us to debate the cultural appropriateness of foods we eat. Food & culture historian Donna Battle Pierce and restauranteur and food expert Valerie Erwin will be joining the conversation. This event was produced jointly by University of Mississippi Libraries and the Culinary Literacy Center of the Free Library of Philadelphia. \nRegister for the event at: https://olemiss.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_XqeRlRVJRVqnbiwqJec7Iw

SUMMARY:Lapidary Info Sesh
DESCRIPTION:Look at some rocks and learn about how you can utilize them in your own creative practices.\n\n\nI hope to establish the Philadelphia Lapidary society\, because I love cutting rocks\, but I don’t know anybody else who does this\, and I desperately need to share the joy that this art form brings me. At the initial meeting\, I hope to talk with folks about what they feel the group should look like\, lay some ground rules for equipment sharing and general courtesy\, and do some hands-on instruction with folks about cutting and polishing minerals! My hope is that the org will become self-sufficient like many other Lapidary Societies throughout the country are\, with an operating volunteer board. – Your Host M. Sheppeck \nIf you have any questions leading up to the event\, feel free to reach out to me at Sheppecksays@gmail.com \nThe Location: This event is held at The Craft Coven’s space in Cherry Street Pier. Plan to arrive a bit early because the pier is a large space. We are located in studio 14 on the second floor. Unfortunately there are no elevators to the second floor. You will need to go up a very large flight of steps to get to the second floor. The space is heated/cooled inside the pier and there are bathrooms located on site (on the first floor). There are often installations and events around the pier\, and the larger space is open from 12-9pm most days. Look at their events HERE and you could make a whole day out of your visit!
