SUMMARY:Cultural Studies\, Humanities\, and Social Studies
DESCRIPTION:Ars Nova Workshop presents the blistering Mendoza Hoff Revels\, co-led by guitarist Ava Mendoza and bassist Devra Hoff\, at Solar Myth on Thursday\, December 19. \nExploding into the avant-jazz consciousness with their astonishing 2023 debut Echolocation\, Mendoza Hoff Revels is an electric and formidable unit led by guitarist Ava Mendoza and bassist Devra Hoff and featuring tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis and drummer Ches Smith. While Mendoza and Hoff have floated around each other’s musical orbits as individuals for decades\, the original impetus of this group was Mendoza’s\, based on the love she and Hoff shared for aggressive and polyglot electric avant-garde ensembles – artists like mid-80’s Black Flag and Ornette Coleman’s Prime Time bands. The result is remarkable – 21st Century progressive rock played by punk rockers with serious improv skills and a deep jazz feel. And\, vitally\, non-stop wicked catchy tunes\, riffs and grooves. \nAva Mendoza is a singular guitarist/composer/songwriter best known for her solo performances and as leader of experimental rock band Unnatural Ways. Over the past decade\, her prodigious & long-honed six-string skills have illuminated numerous projects including Bill Orcutt’s Guitar Quartet and William Parker’s Mayan Space Station. Devra Hoff is a bassist–composer–arranger who has worked extensively with creative musicians and bands spanning genres and generations\, including Sharon Van Etten\, Julia Holter\, Nels Cline and Yoko Ono.

SUMMARY:Clinic Cleaners
DESCRIPTION:Clinic Cleaners are volunteers who help us maintain a neat and tidy space for our patients at the Wildlife Clinic. \nWildlife rehabilitation can be messy work\, and volunteers foster a healthy environment by assisting with laundry\, sweeping floors\, and cleaning the lobby. This allows our expert staff to focus more time on caring for the thousands of animals that the Wildlife Clinic cares for every year. \nRegister Now \nCleaning materials and personal protective equipment\, such as gloves and masks\, are provided. Volunteers should wear clothing they don’t mind getting dirty (yes\, that includes animal waste) and sturdy closed-toe shoes. Clinic Cleaners will not be working directly with animals or have access to patient areas. Clinic Cleaners must be at least 18 years old to sign up. Due to limited space\, we are unable to accept walk-ins. \nCan’t make this date but want to attend an upcoming event? Fill out our volunteer application and we’ll let you know about upcoming volunteer opportunities here at the Schuylkill Center!

SUMMARY:Concert: Foodman Opener: Yolo Ono
DESCRIPTION:Foodman (食品まつり/Takahide Higuchi) is a Japanese electronic producer\, DJ\, and painter. He has been releasing music since 2011 and is based in Yokohama. His work first gained traction in the early 2010s when he was recognised as a leading name in Japan’s footwork and juke scene. \nHis ever-evolving and mutating musical vocabulary draws from every kind of music he stumbles across\, from Chicago footwork to Okinawan folk music of his roots\, ambient to J-pop\, Talvin Singh’s Indian classical music/drum ‘n’ bass fusion to classic video game soundtracks\, then twists them all with his playful psychedelia. This extends to his remixes and DJ mixes\, including his monthly residency at NTS radio mix. \nOpening for Foodman is local fav\, Yolo Ono who cut her teeth with the likes of Mad Decent and Factory Girls crews. \nWith her first DJ gig in October 2011\, Yolo has continued to perform with acts such as James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem\, Venus X\, Maluca\, Princess Nokia\, Anna Lunoe\, Uniique\, VanJess\, Masego\, and Jess Jubilee. Yolo carries her versatile style across a variety of events\, including music festivals\, in-store events\, award shows\, conventions/summits\, and workout classes/yoga retreats. \nWhile Yolo Ono’s initial love for music stemmed from early aughts bloghouse roots\, she plays a versatile arsenal of genres including deep house\, soulful house\, electro\, and disco\, with a passion to amplify up-and-coming and femme artists.
