SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: What Awaits the Naughty
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “What Awaits the Naughty\,” a guide to supernatural beings around the world who keep kids in line and Christmas weird\, with Linda Lee\, lecturer in folklore and fairy tales at the University of Pennsylvania. \nThe song says “Santa Claus is coming to town\,” not “Santa Claus is coming specifically to your house.” In many parts of the world\, children who misbehave expect entirely different visitors\, unwelcome bringers of punishment and fear. \nCome to Fishtown’s Black Squirrel Club to get the lowdown on strange beings that prowl the long nights during the Christmas and Yule season. Linda Lee\, a scholar of folklore and fairy tales who has taught at Penn and other universities throughout the region\, will discuss a host of entities who appear at this time of year to make the naughty rethink their ways. \nHigh on her list will be Krampus\, the goat-like\, devilish being from Central and Eastern Europe who carries chains and punishes naughty children with a birch rod. \nLooking to Iceland\, Lee will tell us about that nation’s Yule trolls and its monstrous Yule Cat\, Jólakötturinn\, known to devour those who don’t receive new clothes to wear on Christmas Eve. \nWe’ll also get to know La Befana\, an Italian witch who rides a broomstick and visits homes on Epiphany. Turning her attention closer to home\, Lee will discuss the origins and ways of Pennsylvania-famous Belsnickel\, a sketchy-looking import from southwest Germany who prowls these parts handing out candy or coal. \nWe’ll learn about the traditions associated with each of these figures and how each one fits into celebrations of Christmas\, Yule\, or the winter seasons. Among the questions we’ll consider: Why do so many of them enforce good behavior? Should we be worried? \nLee’s audience loved this talk when she gave it last year. You’ll be glad you have survived Krampus long enough to be on hand for Lee’s return to discuss him. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Doors open at 4 pm. Talk starts at 4:30.) \nImage of Krampus in Philadelphia generated by Canva AI.

SUMMARY:Philadelphia's Lost Jewish Quarter
DESCRIPTION:Explore the dense history of Philadelphia’s historically Jewish neighborhood – 2 miles\, 2 hours.\n\n\nEvent lasts 2 hours. Tour begins at 6th and Lombard\, ends at 5th and Spruce. \nFrom the 1880s through the 1920s the area between Spruce and Christian Street and 2nd and 6th was the Philadelphia equivalent of New York’s famous Lower East Side. Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe created a vibrant community with its own Yiddish Theater\, literary societies and newspapers\, along with synagogues and banks\, bath houses and delicatessens. \nThis walk begins at the front steps of Mother Bethel Church at 419 South 6th Street\, with an introduction to early Jewish life in Philadelphia\, and then continues to explore the rest of the “Jewish Quarter\,” pointing out sites of former bathhouses\, shuls\, newspapers\, theaters\, stores\, social service buildings\, union halls\, banks and hospitals\, as well as the still-active Society Hill Synagogue and Congregation B’nai Abraham. Hear about the dramatic Kosher butcher strike of 1911\, learn about the Jews arrested on Yom Kippur in 1889\, hear the ongoing debate over the first hot-dog roll\, and discover the true story of the Three Stooges. \nMeet at the front steps of Mother Bethel Church at 419 South 6th Street. \nJerry Silverman is a certified member of the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides. He earned a Bachelor of Hebrew Literature and a Master of Jewish Education\, served as the High School principal of Temple Beth Sholom in Cherry Hill\, NJ\, as well as the Educational Director of Temple Beth Zion-Beth Israel. Since 2009\, Jerry has been giving tours for Mural Arts Philadelphia\, and the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia. He is a founding member of the Museum of American Jewish History\, and was the founder of the former LGBT synagogue Beth Ahavah. \n \nHidden City Members\, remember to use your promo codes for discounts! \nQuestions\, concerns\, conundrums? SUMMARY:Special Screening: FILE/LIFE: We Remember Stories of Pennhurst
DESCRIPTION:Each person at Pennhurst had a File. Each person at Pennhurst had a Life.\n\n\nFile/Life is a community-led exploration of the Pennhurst archives produced by the Insitute on Disabilities\, Temple University\, CEHD. Seven archivists (all people with disabilities and/or family members) share stories from the archives that made them listen\, feel\, imagine\, and remember. In doing so\, they ask the question: Can a file ever contain a life? Stories are told through a variety of mediums\, including short films of varying artistic styles\, that together create an hour-long\, deeply personal\, visual\, and aural exploration of the archives. \n \nThe film is a co-creation between media artist María Teresa Rodríguez and the File/Life team developed over 20 months. The compilation film will be screened at Scribe on Saturday\, December 14th with a discussion with the File/Life collaborators to follow. The film and some installation materials will be on view at Scribe through Saturday\, December 21. \n \nFile/Life Team (Community Archivists\, Collaborating Artists\, Film Crew\, and Design): Jonathan Atiencia\, David Bradley\, Alex Catanese\, Leah Day\, Cait Giambroni\, Harold Gordon\, Ramona Griffiths\, Sabrina Kariat\, Val Keller\, Cecilia Lee\, Jacob Lee\, Elia Lyssy\, Danielle Moore\, Nate Mucha\, Frank Orr\, Biany Perez\, Virginia Plottier\, Nicki Pombier\, María Teresa Rodríguez\, Mike Schut\, Margery Sly\, Lisa Sonneborn\, and Kevin Stalder. \n \nThe film is audio described\, open captioned\, and ASL interpreted. Major support for File/Life: We Remember Stories of Pennhurst was provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.

SUMMARY:Make a Beaded Ornament at Glen Foerd
DESCRIPTION:The Tacony LAB free workshop series at Glen Foerd!\n\n\nTaught by Barb Baur \nMake a beaded ornament! We have cut out shapes on our laser cutter at the Tacony LAB that you will turn into a beautiful beaded ornament. We will have a tree or a snowflake to choose from. \nThis event will take place on location at Glen Foerd\, a hidden treasure in Northeast Philadelphia on the Delaware River about 10 minutes drive from the Tacony LAB. This event is cohosted with Glen Foerd and your registration information will be shared with Glen Foerd. \nRegistration is required for this workshop in order to be sure we have enough supplies. \nTacony LAB Class Enrollment and Attendance Policy \nThe Tacony LAB’s classes are unique in Philadelphia: we do not charge tuition or any sort of fees for any of our classes. \nOur classes are popular and often have wait-lists. If you enroll in a class\, please commit to attending it! \nHow to enroll in a Tacony LAB class: \n• You may enroll IN PERSON at the LAB beginning 3 weeks before a class first meets. Please check the “About” section of the LAB’s Facebook page for open hours or call the LAB at 267-686-7420 to hear the hours. \n• You may enroll online using Eventbrite beginning one week before a class first meets (provided there are still spaces) by visiting our Eventbrite page: www.eventbrite.com/o/the-tacony-lab-community-arts-center-1… \n• You may come to the first class and enroll at that time\, providing space is available. For same day enrollment\, please arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of the class. \nOnly one registration per person will be accepted. Each student attending the class must register with their name and email address. Multiple registrations under the same name will not be honored. \nIf you enroll ahead of time and do not attend the first class\, you will be removed from the roster and your place will be offered to another student. \nIf you need to miss subsequent classes or decide you no longer wish to attend\, please notify the LAB by phone call or email ahead of time. \nIf you do not notify the LAB of absence or withdrawal\, you will not be able to enroll in another class until 3 months have passed.
