SUMMARY:The Power of Hollywood: A Conversation on 'American Energy Cinema'
DESCRIPTION:What does energy look like on the big screen?\n\n\nJoin us for a Fellow in Focus conversation with Raechel Lutz and Conevery Bolton Valencius\, coeditor and contributor to the recent collection American Energy Cinema. By analyzing Hollywood films that feature energy as historical objects\, the volume shows how energy systems of all kinds are both integral to the daily life of Americans and inextricable from larger societal change and global politics. \n \nAbout the speakers\nRaechel Lutz is a historian and teacher at the Wardlaw + Hartridge School. She earned her PhD in United States history from Rutgers University\, and is the coeditor of American Energy Cinema. Her writing and research focuses on environmental history and energy history and her manuscript project is an environmental history of Exxon titled The Good Polluter. She is also editing a collection of essays on the environmental history of New Jersey. \nConevery Bolton Valencius is a professor of history at Boston College. She earned her PhD in the history of science from Harvard University and works on the history of environments\, health\, and energy. Valencius is the author of two books: The Health of the Country: How American Settlers Understood Themselves and Their Land and The Lost History of the New Madrid Earthquake. She is currently finishing a book about earthquakes and energy in the contemporary United States\, which she is cowriting with science journalist Anna Kuchment of the Boston Globe. \n\n\nAbout Fellow in Focus\nThe Rohm and Haas Fellow in Focus Lecture series gives the Institute’s scholars an opportunity to present their work to a broad audience interested in history\, science\, and culture. Fellow in Focus lectures are presented by the Beckman Center for the History of Chemistry. \n\n\nAbout Science and Society\nOur Science and Society speaker series explores the history of science embedded in our everyday lives. We invite scientists\, historians\, policymakers\, and educators for engaging\, in-depth conversations that expand our perspectives. Program formats include lectures\, interviews\, roundtables\, and book launches. Science and Society events are curated for an adult audience\, fostering curiosity\, conversation\, and interactivity. Each evening concludes with a free reception with the speakers. \n\n\nFeatured image: Scene from Wings\, 1927.

SUMMARY:Clay Play Open Studio Making
DESCRIPTION:Come out and touch some clay!\n\n\nThis is an open session clay making workshop. Each person will receive 1-2 pounds of clay per session and access to our basic tools and supplies. Pieces can be glazed with color and will be once fired and ready for pickup in 3-4 weeks. We will have limited colors available and suggest that you purchase your own Stroke and Coat glaze if you’d like consistent color and control. You’re welcome to bring any of your own tools. \nThe instructor leading your session will have a basic project that you can build if you aren’t working independantly. Some sessions will be more guided than others. \nAny unfinished clay pieces should go home with you. We will do our best to provide you with plastic and wrap enough to walk out with your piece so you can keep it moist enough to complete it and dry it ahead of firing. Please plan ahead if you know you were looking to make something complex that you’ll want to take home and continue working on. \nThis is an ongoing workshop offering. You can come to this session\, take your piece home to finish and dry it fully\, then bring it back in the future to have it fired. Or you can complete your piece in the 2 hour session and leave it at the studio to dry and be fired for you. We will have a clay artist on site that can answer technical questions and get you started with a project idea. Suggested age is adults but ages 7+up can attend along with a paying adult. \nMay 1st: Hosted by Cassie \nAbout your instructors:Clay artist Sea Star (pronouns: they/them and she/her) has been making sculptures with clay since they were 2 years old. The material has been a great exercise in play\, design\, and patience. Over the years\, they have harvested and processed unique clays from Maine to Tennessee to Puerto Rico. In 2022 Sea earned a BFA in Interdisciplinary Sculpture from MICA and currently works as a Glaze and Decoration Technician for a Philadelphia pottery manufacturer. \nCassie Jones (pronouse: She/They) is the craft coven founder and lead organizer. She has her hands in most crafts but has a great passion for anything scultping. When running open studio you can expect a concentration on non-funtional applications and decorative projects. Currently working on staff at Black Hound Clay studio Cassie has also worked many years at Painting with a Twist in Philadelphia\, run a leather brand CUSP by Cassie\, is building a line of chain stitch embroidered patches\, as well as many other ventures since graduating from The Savannah College of Art and Design in 2010. \nAbout the space:This event is located in the Starr Garden Playground rec center. When you enter the gates for the playground you will walk to the right of the building to the entrance that is facing Lombard Street. The rec center is mostly used for after school programs and kids camps but is empty in the evenings so they allow us to have adult programming. You’re welcome to bring your own water bottle or snacks\, and there will be light music and a social studio atmosphere rather than a classroom. \nOrganized by The Craft Coven\, this event is part of a community oriented series of creative enrichment projects focused on affordability for all. For more information on the group’s missions and to get involved more widely check out https://www.TheCraftCoven.org and become a Member for all the inside opportunities and classes. \nIf you woud like updates on pieces that are in the firing process please watch the IG account @CassiesCraftCoven for updates\, or email Info@TheCraftCoven.org with the date you attended.

A portion of the class will be held outside; please dress for the weather.\nThis program takes place in person at Mt. He is an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist. Scott has been working with trees since 1980\, and he joined Mt Cuba Center in 1986.\nWilliam Trescott is the Arboriculture Manager at Mt. Cuba Center. SUMMARY:Bike and Hike Gathering in Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Regional gathering in the Philadelphia area for anyone participating in the Bike and Hike Fundraiser\n\n\nJoin us on Sunday\, May 19 at 2pm on the Schuylkill River Trail near the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education! We will have a regional gathering for communities and individuals in the Philadelphia area who are participating in the Bike and Hike Fundraiser to get together\, be in nature\, and go for a walk together! There will be poetry reading and some light meditation on the Earth\, the land\, and our relationship to the natural world. We aim to be in community with others doing this work\, and thinking about the intersection between faith and climate\, while fundraising for PA IPL. Help us increase feelings of community within the PA IPL network\, and increase participation and enjoyment of our annual Bike and Hike! \n\n\n\nThe annual PA IPL Climate Advocacy Bike & Hike is a tour of PA’s great outdoors & various routes that highlight the beauty of our state. The ride seeks to nurture hope for a cleaner future across our state & is an opportunity for cyclists and hikers to connect with likeminded people and the broader PA IPL community statewide by sharing their journeys – the diversity of landscape and life – across Pennsylvania\, reminding us of what we work so hard to protect!
