SUMMARY:Uncle Bobbie's X Eddie Glaude Jr. - Book Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome NYT bestselling author\, Eddie S. Glaude Jr. for his latest book\, “We Are The Leaders We Have Been Looking For”\n\n\nWe are excited to welcome\, Princeton University professor and New York Times bestselling author\, Eddie S. Glaude Jr. to discuss her newest book\, We Are The Leaders We Have Been Looking For. \nEddie will be in conversation with author\, activist and the owner of Uncle Bobbie’s Marc Lamont Hill. Q&A to follow. \nAll copies of We Are The Leaders available will be signed. \nYou don’t want to miss this! \n****** \nAbout the Book: \nFrom the author of the New York Times bestseller Begin Again\, a politically astute\, lyrical meditation on how ordinary Black Americans can shake off their reliance on a small group of professional politicians and pursue self-cultivation and grassroots movements to achieve a more just and perfect democracy. \nWe are more than the circumstances of our lives\, and what we do matters. In We Are the Leaders We Have Been Looking For\, one of the nation’s preeminent scholars and a New York Times bestselling author\, Eddie S. Glaude Jr.\, makes the case that the hard work of becoming a better person should be a critical feature of Black politics. Through virtuoso interpretations of Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, Malcolm X\, and Ella Baker\, Glaude shows how ordinary people have the capacity to be the heroes that our democracy so desperately requires\, rather than outsourcing their needs to leaders who purportedly represent them. \nBased on the Du Bois Lectures delivered at Harvard University\, the book begins with Glaude’s unease with the Obama years. He felt then\, and does even more urgently now\, that the excitement around the Obama presidency had become a disciplining tool to narrow legitimate forms of Black political dissent. This narrowing continues to undermine the well-being of Black communities. In response\, Glaude guides us away from the Scylla of enthusiastic reliance on elected leaders and the Charybdis of full surrender to a belief in unchanging political structures. Glaude weaves anecdotes about his own evolving views on Black politics together with the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson\, John Dewey\, Sheldon Wolin\, Toni Morrison\, James Baldwin\, and Ralph Ellison. \nNarrated with passion and philosophical intensity\, this book is a powerful reminder that if American democracy is to survive\, we must build a better society that derives its strength from the pew\, not the pulpit. \n****** \nDoors open at 6:00pm. \nBuy your book now and save on the General Admission fee! A ll tickets are non-refundable. \nStreet parking available. Wheelchair accessible entrance also available.

SUMMARY:Death & Life at Mt. Moriah Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Mount Moriah is the largest cemetery in Pennsylvania\, and home to some of our city’s finest grave architecture.\n\n\nMount Moriah is the largest cemetery in Pennsylvania\, and home to some of our city’s finest grave architecture. Trees and vines have engulfed the gravestones in some areas\, giving the place the atmosphere of a lost city in the jungle. Almost every style of tomb can be found here\, from Egyptian Revival to Art Nouveau. Guests will learn about the role of cemeteries as a place for leisure in the Victorian era\, as well as the influence of the Freemasons. Part wilderness and part sculpture-garden\, this city of the dead is by turns eerie and poignant. Join Hidden City as we peel back the canopy and reveal the wonders below. \n \nIMPORTANT DETAILS \nWe’ll meet at the main gate\, where Kingsessing dead-ends at 62nd Street.***If you’re using Google Maps type in 6191 Kingsessing Avenue*** \nThis tour requires significant walking\, so practical shoes and water are a must. There are plenty of ticks\, especially as the weather warms\, so we recommend long pants\, socks\, and most of all a careful check of oneself after the tour is over. \nTour guide John Vidumsky has been exploring abandoned spaces for as long as he can remember. He has an MA in history from Temple University\, where he studied 20th-century Russian history. John was Hidden City’s first intern! \nHidden City Members\, remember to use your promo codes for discounts! \nQuestions\, concerns\, conundrums? SUMMARY:"The Mother Artist" Book Launch Party
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening celebrating the book launch of “The Mother Artist: Portraits of Ambition\, Limitation\, and Creativity”.\n\n\n“The only reason you’ll want to put down Ricketts’s lyrical tour de force is to make more art.”—Sarah Sentilles\, author of Stranger Care: A Memoir of Loving What Isn’t Ours \n \nJoin us for an evening celebrating the launch of The Mother Artist: Portraits of Ambition\, Limitaiton\, and Creativity as well as the many luminous contributions that mother artists make to the Philadelphia arts community on the 3rd floor of the Paradigm Arts Building. Light food and beverages will be served\, and the author will give a reading at 6:00 p.m. \nThe Mother Artist\, by Philadelphia writer Catherine Ricketts\, weaves memoir with studies of the art and lives of modern and contemporary women artists who had children. Highlighting 20th-century artists like Ruth Asawa\, Elizabeth Catlett\, and Alice Neel\, as well as contemporary Philadelphia artists like Alison Dilworth\, Aimee Koran\, Becky Suss\, and Mickayel Thurin\, The Mother Artist debunks the myth that to be an artist you must give up a family life\, demonstrates the very real challenges facing women who aspire to rise in their disciplines\, and explores the humanizing vision that caregivers bring to the making and shaping of culture. Rachel Yoder (Nightbitch) calls this book “brilliant and open-hearted\,” while James KA Smith (editor\, Image) writes\, “Read this if you’re a mother and an artist\, to be sure; but read this\, too\, if you’re human and hope for a different world.” \nAdmisssion includes a copy of Catherine Ricketts’s book The Mother Artist \nKids under 12 are free to attend. Dress code is festive. \n \nSchedule: \nWellspring: A Mother Artist Project is thrilled to partner with Catherine Ricketts and Paradigm Gallery to launch her amazing new book! Let’s CELEBRATE! In order to support women in their callings as mothers and artists\, Wellspring provides environments of rest and creative invitation where the exploration of creativity\, faith\, and motherhood are supported. A place where one’s creative life and spiritual life can intertwine\, to feed the mind and soul\, as well as the motherly heart and artistic hand. We host nurturing retreats\, art exhibitions\, panel conversations\, and workshops\, with a rich community that makes space for mother artists of all ages and stages\, and all creative mediums and expressions.
