SUMMARY:Priority Hoarding: A Retrospectacle
DESCRIPTION:“Where our baggage is yours!” \nWelcome to the Bearded Ladies’ Hairport\, an interactive installation & performance series built on 16-years of accumulated baggage from a queer cabaret company devoted to art\, care\, mess\, and community. While you’re waiting for a flight that may never take off\, unpack your baggage and rifle through some of ours. You may recognize something as your own\, or find something you never knew you were carrying. \nMade for anyone who has ever lost a bag\, gotten stuck\, or missed a (metaphoric) flight\, this trans(formational) installation asks: how do you know it’s time to move on when you don’t know where you’re going? \nProduced by The Bearded Ladies Cabaret\nPart of FringeArt’s 2026 Festival & Collective Futures \nInstallation on view September 10-December 20\, 2026\nat The Hairport | 444 N 3rd Street\, Philadelphia PA 19123 \nInstallation hours:\nWednesday\, Thursday & Friday 4-9PM | Last timed entry at 8:15PM\nSaturday & Sunday 11AM-3PM| Last timed entry at 2:15PM \nLive events at The Hairport | Saturdays at 8PM \nThe Hairport is an interactive\, immersive installation filled with costumes\, cardboard props\, and other ephemera from the Bearded Ladies Cabaret’s 16-year performance history. Visitors will make their way through a sprawling multi-room space made to look like a fantastical\, metaphorical “airport”. Visitors will be invited to interact with components of the installation and may encounter docents in guiding roles. The experience will culminate in a “lounge” space full of “Bearded baggage” which will also serve as the performance site for the Now Hoarding: In-Flight Entertainment live event series. \nIt will take visitors approximately 60-75 minutes to view the entirety of the Priority Hoarding installation. Groups of 6 will enter the installation\, at 15-minute timed entry intervals. An opportunity to ride a Surrey bike is offered but not required.

SUMMARY:Curators in Conversation: Revisiting the Story of the Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Join curators Bill Ewald and David Brigham for a gallery talk conversation that revisits the American Revolution through the exhibition Paths to Independence. Moving beyond a simple Patriot versus Loyalist framework\, they explore how revolutionary ideals intersected with the practical realities of war—provisioning\, militias\, governance\, and daily decision‑making. This discussion opens the story wider\, asking how curators can reintroduce historical complexity and include many voices in telling the nation’s founding moment. Discover how ideas\, operations\, and lived experience shaped the Revolution we continue to interpret today.

SUMMARY:Building Hope in Gaza
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion with Dr. David Hasan on what support might look like for children facing the humanitarian situation in Gaza.\n\n\nSince October 7\, 2023\, UNICEF reports that over 20\,000 children in Gaza have been killed and at least 40\,000 injured. With estimates that almost all schools in Gaza have sustained damage or been destroyed\, over 600\,000 children remained out of school as of early 2026. Some 800\,000 children have been displaced from their homes\, and in the first six months of this year\, UNICEF treated just under 20\,000 children for acute malnutrition. Child protection indicators\, like those around child labor and psychosocial distress\, are worsening amid these conditions. \nWhat might support look like for children facing this devastating humanitarian situation? \nIn 2024\, Palestinian American neurosurgeon David Hasan took it upon himself to try to answer this question after traveling to Gaza on one of the first international medical missions in the territory. He responded by founding the nonprofit Gaza Children’s Village (GCV). Its flagship program\, the Academy of Hope\, provides education\, meals\, healthcare\, and emotional support to thousands of orphaned and displaced children. GCV\, in coordination with international partners\, the Board of Peace\, and with approval from the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT)\, is also setting up a mobile hospital to address the critical lack of pediatric care. GCV also runs a women’s center\, an “educational city\,” and is working to deliver fresh food aid. \nJoin Perry World House for a discussion with Dr. David Hasan\, moderated by journalist Deborah Amos\, who has reported from war zones for decades\, to learn more about this initiative\, what it has taken to build it amid ongoing strife\, and what he believes needs to happen next. \nGuest Speaker \nDr. David Hasan is a Professor of Neurosurgery\, Neurology\, and Biomedical Engineering at Duke University\, where he has built an international reputation as a cerebrovascular scientist-surgeon\, having treated more than 2\,500 brain aneurysms and authored over 270 peer-reviewed publications. He was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2024. Since founding the Gaza Children’s Village\, he has led its growth into a multi-site operation supported by figures like José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen and donors from both Palestinian and Israeli communities\, and he now oversees its expansion into pediatric medical care alongside education and psychosocial support. \nDeborah Amos is a Ferris Professor of Journalism in Residence at Princeton University. A longtime international correspondent\, Amos spent much of her award-winning career at National Public Radio. Her reporting on the Middle East and on refugees regularly aired in the U.S. on NPR’s Morning Edition\, Weekend Edition\, and All Things Considered. She recently covered the Syrian and Iraqi refugee crises\, the economy in the Middle East\, and the Arab youth surge. Previously she reported for ABC’s Nightline and PBS’s Frontline. Amos is the author of two books: Eclipse of the Sunnis: Power\, Exile\, and Upheaval in the Middle East\, and Lines in the Sand: Desert Storm and the Remaking of the Arab World. She has won several major journalism honors\, including a Courage in Journalism Award from the International Women’s Media Foundation\, a George Foster Peabody Award\, an Edward R. Murrow Lifetime Achievement Award\, and an Emmy.

SUMMARY:The Historical Society of Frankford: New Exhibit\, and Monthly Meeting and Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Using historic maps\, photographs\, artifacts\, and documents\, Frankford and the 1876 Centennial provides a snapshot of Frankford at the time of the U.S. Centennial. Still in the midst of an industrial depression\, Frankford’s developing industries were not heavily represented at the Exhibition\, but they were the heartbeat of the neighborhood. The fair offered Frankford visitors technological expertise and inspiration\, as well as a wide variety of souvenirs. Among the artifacts preserved in the Historical Society of Frankford’s collections is a rare carved chair from the Pennsylvania Pavilion\, a match to ones owned by the Smithsonian Institution\, the Atwater Kent holdings\, and in a private collection. \nThe exhibit opens Tuesday evening\, September 8\, for the Historical Society of Frankford’s monthly lecture and runs through the Semiquincentennial year. Admission is free during the Society’s current opening hours: Tuesdays\, Thursdays\, and Saturdays\, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. \nThe same evening as the exhibit opening\, historian Jeff Denman will speak about his new book\, Philadelphia Quakers and the American Revolution. Denman shows how the Quakers’ pacifist beliefs ran afoul of revolutionary passions\, undoing their control of Pennsylvania politics and government. Copies will be available for purchase and signing. \nDoors open at 7:00 PM\, and Denman’s presentation begins at 7:30. It will also stream live on the HSF Facebook page. The lecture is also free and open to the public. Free\, off street parking will be available across Orthodox Street at the Frankford Friends School. Light refreshments will be served before and after the presentation. \nPlease join us for two intriguing examinations of Frankford and Philadelphia history.

SUMMARY:Save The Academy of Natural Sciences Museum Rally
DESCRIPTION:Philly Science Action\, Green Philly\, and Skype a Scientist invite the people of Philadelphia to join us for a rally to hold Drexel University accountable for the closure of the Academy of Natural Sciences Museum. \nWe are asking Drexel to find a way to keep the museum open to the public past September of 2026. \nFor almost 200 years\, the Academy of Natural Sciences has been dedicated to understanding the natural world and inspiring everyone to care for it. \nAt a time when climate change and science continue to be under attack\, Philadelphia cannot afford to lose another institution that connects people to the natural world. From initiatives like Plastic Free Philly to Academy Town Halls that bring people together to discuss climate challenges\, along with exhibits that make science accessible to the public\, the Academy plays a critical role in our city. \nThis is an institution Philadelphia can’t afford to lose.

SUMMARY:"Possession: Body\, Memory\, Home " Gallery at Scribe
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Friday\, July 24\, 4 – 6:30 PM \nThis exhibit brings together the work of artists Jihan Thomas\, Efi Green\, and Linda Fernandez in an exhibition exploring healing\, identity\, and self-possession through deeply personal visual language. Across painting\, mixed media\, abstraction\, and symbolism\, the artists transform experiences of grief\, motherhood\, migration\, mental health\, and cultural memory into spaces of reflection and resilience. Rooted in vivid color\, expressive gesture\, and layered storytelling\, Possession considers home not only as a physical place\, but as something carried within the body\, memory\, and spirit. Together\, these works affirm art’s power to hold vulnerability\, transformation\, and collective care in times of uncertainty. \nFREE \nThe exhibition will be on view at Scribe Video Center Monday through Friday\, 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM\, from July 24 to September 12. \nThe Gary Smalls Gallery Project at Scribe is curated by Tamara Mason.
