DESCRIPTION:WPA in the Wissahickon: Wonderful Park Assets or Worrisome Park Additions – Part I\nMeeting at Northwestern Avenue and Forbidden Drive (see map here)\nEver walk past a structure in the Wissahickon and observe a cornerstone with the initials WPA and a date? WPA is short for the Works Progress Administration\, a federal New Deal program during the Great Depression that helped provide jobs for unemployed workers. Fairmount Park and the Wissahickon Valley were sites for multiple WPA projects and some controversy.\nJoin us for a loop walk that includes stops at several structures built by WPA workers. We’ll share highlights\, some history about the buildings\, and the controversy about the scope of work in the Wissahickon. Children 12 years of age and older are welcome when accompanied by an adult; no dogs except for service animals\, please.\nDistance: 5 miles\nDifficulty Level: Difficult (many inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nAudience: Ages 12+\nParking: There should be plenty of parking in the nearby Northwestern Ave Parking Area.\nRestrooms: There will not be bathrooms available for use during our hike.\nRegistration is required for all events so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations.\nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain or icy conditions. Service animals are always welcome. For more information contact Marisa Miller at miller@fow.org. Visit www.fow.org for updates.\nRegister below!

SUMMARY:Feedback Forum
DESCRIPTION:Bring your artwork to share with a group of like minded creatives for honest and caring feedback. For artists of all levels and mediums\n\n\nJoin other members of The Craft Coven to discuss our work as a supportive and caring group of creatives. Presenting artists will be cut off at a maximum of 6 presenters so that we can provide a solid 15 minutes of feedback to each artist. Presenting artists will also receive a full recap of the feedback provided\, so no need to take notes during your 15 minutes of time. \nPRESENTING WILL START AT 4PM ON THE DOT. Please arrive early\, parking can be tough\, public transportation gets you almost to our front door. I’ll have the doors open by 3:30pm so come get settled in with a bevy before we start \nIf presenting: Please email any specifics about your work as soon as you sign up to info@thecraftcoven.orgNote that these first few events will be held in the Coven studio and we can only accommodate smaller works. The ideal presenters will have 2 or 3 dimensional pieces that we can place on a 6 foot table for attendees to view from all sides. You are welcome to bring easles to setup on the table\, a table cloth is optional. We are not yet equipped for video work (a projector is coming soon!) Auditory/ musical work can be played if already uploaded to a website or played from an emailed file. Presented work must be able to setup and breakdown in 5 minutes or less between presenters. If you have a more complicated setup please email ahead of time and we will confirm whether or not we can accommodate. In the future we will be hosting these events at other locations and private studios. Please email with thoughts or questions info@thecraftcoven.org \nIf attending: Never been to a crit or similar event before? This is a great trial step for you! Feel free to come and just watch\, understand the format and come back with feedback for the next event. If you’re looking for a way to more thoughtfully talk about art in general- this is a first lesson for you\, and your host will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Please keep your comments to constructive and informative feedback rather than only personal likes and dislikes. For example instead of saying ‘I really like your painting\, and would definitely hang it in my home’ you could say ‘I’m drawn to the bright colors and representational forms. I hang mostly modern art in my home and this piece would fit right into the theme’Please don’t take up too much of the artists time with your feedback. It is most helpful for makers to hear a range of different opinions and thoughts so that they can best form their next steps based on the feedback that resonates best with their goals. An ideal response takes up less than 2 minutes of time then sesedes the floor to any other comments. \nFree beer will be provided (while supplies last) thanks to Philadelphia Brewing Company. Snacks are welcome but please label with ingrediants and be prepared to share. \nAbout your Host:Cassie Jones is a multidisciplinarian artist as well as the leader of The Craft Coven. Recently her personal work ranges from 2 dimensional watercolor\, embroidery\, ink\, papermaking\, and acrylic painting as well as 3 dimensional fired clay\, fiber arts\, textile installations and leatherwork. Cassie graduated with a double major in Accessory Design and Fiber Arts from The Savannah College of Art and Design in 2010 and has over 15 years of experience working in varying fields of art and creative education. \nAbout the Location: The coven studio is located in the heart of Old City in a below ground storefront. There are 10 steps down to get into the space\, and our ceilings are not very high. Anyone over 6’4″ will have watch their head until they have a seat. Any more questions about accessibility-please reach out!

SUMMARY:Fierce Desires: Variation\, Conflict\, and Pleasure in the History of America
DESCRIPTION:From puritans to polyamory\, Professor Rebecca Davis explores the story of America’s sexual past.\n\n\nIn the United States today\, we have government decrees that there are only two sexes\, debates about “trad wives” and polyamory\, and frequent references to the nation’s “puritan” past. But in her latest book—and in this talk—Professor Rebecca L. Davis argues that seventeenth-century Puritans are a weak precedent for how the history of sexuality has unfolded in the United States. Into the 1800s\, the United States was far more welcoming of gender nonconformity and same-sex/queer desires than we might presume. Instead\, a significant shift occurred in the late nineteenth century\, when anti-obscenity and anti-immigration legislation vastly expanded the federal government’s investment in shaping sexual morality. The history that unfolds is far less about prudish puritans than shifting sexual values. Our contemporary conflicts over sex and gender highlight the power of this surprising history. \nRebecca L. Davis is the Miller Family Early Career Professor of History and an associate professor of Women and Gender Studies at the University of Delaware. She is a historian of marriage\, religion\, sexuality\, and politics in the United States. In addition to Fierce Desires: A New History of Sex and Sexuality in America\, she is author of Public Confessions: The Religious Conversions that Changed American Politics and More Perfect Unions: The American Search for Marital Bliss\, and the co-editor of Heterosexual Histories. She is also a podcast host and producer and writes the newsletter Carnal Knowledge\, which explains the history behind today’s headlines about gender\, sexuality\, and American politics. \nPenn State Great Valley strives to host inclusive\, accessible events that enable all individuals in our community to engage fully. The campus includes accessible and gender neutral restroom\, dedicated parking spaces\, elevators\, lactation room\, step-free access\, and a complimentary wheelchair. If you require any accommodation not listed above\, or have questions about the physical access provided\, please contact Becky Stanko at rus1078@psu.edu or call 610-648-3236.

SUMMARY:Cadence in the Clouds
DESCRIPTION:Cadence in the Clouds is an industry night that celebrates the dreamers in Philadelphia; the artists\, the creatives\, the entrepreneurs\, and the supporters of the arts. It is meant to show Philly artists that they don’t need to move out of the city to have a thriving career. Philly is a city rich in history\, and they should be a part of it given the necessary resources and connections. We aim to create the industry night that puts all of those people in one room\, while using all local Philadelphia businesses and artists\, to make a night where people connect and collaborate through the language of music. While patrons get to enjoy a live concert featuring music from DJ Bear One\, A.Rob\, and Sahlii\, their ticket also comes with artist bios\, raffles for a studio session and a photography/music video shoot\, live art\, complimentary snacks and sweets\, and so much more. \nThis particular concert is all about celebrating artists who are courageous enough to use their music and their art to make a change and stand up to what is going on in the world. It’s meant to show that while some pay punish you for speaking up\, we will highlight you\, putting you on our stage to amplify your voice. Every artist and business who is taking part has used their platform as a release\, and as a means to protest everything happening in the world. By purchasing tickets or any of the art that will be at the event\, you are directly putting money into the pockets of Black and Brown artists.
