SUMMARY:Girard College Historical Campus Tour
DESCRIPTION:Take a guided tour behind the 10-foot wall of Girard College to explore its history and architecture.\n\n\nEnjoy a guided tour behind the famous 10-foot wall of Girard College with Director of Historical Resources Kathy Haas. As we stroll around this 43-acre oasis in the middle of the city\, we’ll talk about Stephen Girard\, the 19th-century multi-millionaire who left his fortune to create a school for financially-disadvantaged children; the monumental architecture of the school\, including Founder’s Hall\, a National Historic Landmark; the generations of students who have lived and learned here (and still do); and the powerful civil rights activism that led to the school’s desegregation. \nThe tour will begin at the front gate of Girard College (corner of S. College and Corinthian Avenues)

SUMMARY:Identity and Well-Being: Issues of Policy & Practice
DESCRIPTION:Exploring how identity-based disparities are embedded in social policy\, housing\, education\, and healthcare.\n\n\nHow do race\, gender\, sexuality\, and other aspects of identity influence well-being? This conversation centers on how identity-based disparities are embedded in social policy\, housing\, education\, and healthcare systems. Our speakers will explore how intersectional approaches to well-being can illuminate paths toward greater justice and inclusion. \nSpeakers: DeMarcus Jenkins & Amy Hillier. Moderated by Ayana Colvin. \nSpeaker Biographies: \nAmy Hillier\, PhD\, MSW\, is a social worker and an Associate Professor in the School of Social Policy & Practice (SP2). Her most recent research focuses on transgender youth and their families. With colleagues\, she is working to develop a short screener for parents to complete in health care settings to identify young children who are gender non-conforming\, to normalize a wide range of gender expressions and identify families who might need support. \nHer other research has focused on historical housing and public health disparities\, including mortgage redlining\, affordable housing\, healthy foods\, park use and access\, and outdoor advertising. She has taught courses in city planning\, urban studies\, public health\, and social policy on GIS\, racism\, public health and the built environment\, and research methods. \nShe is the founding director of the cross-school graduate LGBTQ certificate. With Dr. Stephanie Boddie\, Dr. Hillier co-directs “The Ward\,” a research\, teaching\, and public history project dedicated to sharing the timeless lessons about racism and the role of research in affecting social change based on W.E.B. Du Bois’ 1899 book\, The Philadelphia Negro. \nDeMarcus A. Jenkins is an assistant professor in the School of Social Policy and Practice with a secondary appointment in the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. Broadly\, his program of research centers on important policy- and practice-relevant issues concerning Black and other vulnerable populations in relation to education\, housing\, and criminal/juvenile justice. Specifically\, his work focuses on (1) the interconnectedness of education and criminal justice\, including the strategies\, technologies\, and logics of carceral systems that appear in schools; (2) the relationship between education reform and urban development with a focus on housing policies; and (3) the politics of policy change or how marginalized populations interact with the policy process. He investigates the intersection of race\, urban space\, and policy and its implications for educational equity and justice. Dr. Jenkins’ interdisciplinary scholarship draws on critical theories of race\, critical spatial theory\, Black geographies\, critical policy studies\, and urban sociology. His research has been funded by the Spencer Foundation and the William T. Grant Foundation. \nBefore joining SP2\, Dr. Jenkins held faculty appointments at Penn State University and the University of Arizona\, where he was founding faculty in the Education Policy Center. He is currently a faculty affiliate at the Social Policy Institute at Washington University in St. Louis and the inaugural visiting faculty fellow at the Campus Abolition Research Lab (CARL) at the University of Michigan. Previously\, he worked as a policy analyst at the state and local levels and as a high school English teacher. Dr. Jenkins earned his PhD in Urban Schooling from the University of California\, Los Angeles. He received his EdM from Georgia State University and MA from American University. He holds a BA in English and Afro-American and African Studies from the University of Michigan. \nAyana Colvin is a PhD student at the School of Social Policy and Practice. Before joining SP2\, she worked as a high school English and a New Language (ENL) and English Language Arts (ELA) teacher in the New York City public schools system for eight years\, gaining valuable insights that propelled her toward a career in social work. \nShe holds a BA in Humanities with minors in French and film studies from Ohio Wesleyan University\, a Master’s in TESOL Education from City College of New York\, and a Master’s in Social Work from Columbia University.

SUMMARY:Nature Hour: How to Love a Forest
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this virtual presentation to learn about how to care for our forests and ecosystems at this moment in time.\n\n\nAbout the Presentation\nIn this talk\, Ethan Tapper\, a forester\, bestselling author and digital storyteller from Vermont\, will draw from his work as a forester and his book How to Love a Forest: The Bittersweet Work of Tending a Changing World to discuss what it means to care for forests and other ecosystems at this moment in time. How do we respond to the harmful legacies of the past? How do we use our species’ incredible power to heal rather than to harm? How do we reach toward a better future? In a time in which many believe that “protecting” ecosystems means protecting them from ourselves\, Ethan argues that humans must take action to help ecosystems heal and to move into a more abundant future\, and that to do so is an act of care and compassion – of love. \nEthan’s message is at once compassionate and pragmatic\, clear-eyed and hopeful\, sobering and inspiring – a powerful new vision for how we can build a world that works for all of its ecosystems and all of its people. \n \nAbout Your Presenter\nEthan Tapper is a forester\, digital storyteller\, and the bestselling author of How to Love a Forest: The Bittersweet Work of Tending a Changing World. For more than a decade\, Ethan has been recognized as a thought-leader in the world of ecosystem stewardship\, winning numerous regional and national awards for his work. More recently\, he has been recognized as a writer – since its publication in 2024\, How to Love a Forest has been named the winner of the 2025 New England Book Award for nonfiction and received international acclaim. \nEthan’s message of relationship\, responsibility and hope reaches millions of people each year through his writing\, social media channels with hundreds of thousands of followers\, and the hundreds of walks\, talks and keynotes that he delivers across North America each year. \nEthan works\, writes\, hunts\, birds and runs a small consulting forestry business from his home at Bear Island – his 175-acre working forest\, homestead\, orchard and sugarbush in Vermont – and plays in his punk band\, The Bubs. \n \nAbout Nature Hour\nNature Hour is a lecture series presented by Lancaster Conservancy\, taking place on Thursdays throughout the winter. The one-hour virtual lectures\, which include a Q&A with the expert presenter\, cover a wide range of conservation\, environmental\, and nature-related topics impacting our community\, region\, and world to an audience of all ages of learners. \nTo find out about other events in the series please follow this link: Nature Hour Collection 2025/2026 \nTo see recordings of past Nature Hour lectures\, please visit the Conservancy’s YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@LancasterConservancy \n\n\nThank you to our incredible Annual Sponsors for their generous support!

DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome bestselling author\, Sharon G. Flake for a book signing celebrating the release of “Hattie Mae Begins Again”.\n\n\nWe are so excited for this! \nThree-time Coretta Scott King Honor winning author\, Sharon G. Flake is coming to Uncle Bobbie’s to sign copies of her new book\, Hattie Mae Begins Again. \nThis is the perfect event to bring your young reader to! \nEach ticket comes with a copy of Hattie Mae Begins Again. \nSee you in Germantown! \n——– \nAbout the author: \nSharon G. Flake is best known for her ground-breaking novel The Skin I’m In \nwhich changed the way many Black girls viewed themselves. Considered a modern \nclassic\, this best-selling novel is used in classrooms worldwide and studied by experts in \nthe field of education and literature. Flake is the best-selling author of over a dozen \nbooks\, with more than 1.5 million in print on six continents. She has won numerous \nawards and recognition by the pillars in the publishing industry\, including having her \nwork named a Kirk’s Prize finalist. Her books continue to empower and shine light on \nteens and communities often underrepresented in publishing. \n \nAbout the Book: \nFrom the three-time Coretta Scott King Honor winning author of The Skin I’m In comes a poignant story about a southern girl far from home at an elite girls boarding school in the north\, who must find the courage to be herself and to dream of a brighter future\, set against the backdrop of the great migration in South Philly. \nYou can be what you want in life.Climb as high as you wish.Nothing can stop you\,not even pedigree. \nHattie Mae is from Seed County\, North Carolina. She knows hard work: milking cows\, plucking chickens\, minding the garden. Her hands are made for manual labor\, her feet for dirt—that is\, according to Lisa and some of the girls at Miss Abigail’s School for Exceptional Young Ladies in Philadelphia. In their eyes\, Hattie Mae will never break into upper society and is unworthy of becoming a doctor or a lawyer. \nThough Hattie Mae sticks out like a sore thumb and has more in common with the hundreds of Black folks pouring into the city looking for better opportunities during the Great Migration\, she knows that she belongs. She just has to prove it to the rest of the girls—and maybe even to herself. \nA moving coming-of-age story about finding the courage to be yourself\, chasing your dreams\, and lending a hand to others along the way. \n—— \nDoors open at event start \nEach ticket comes with a copy of Hattie Mae Begins Again. \nAll sales are final. \nOrder of entry will be on a first come\, first serve basis. \nYou must have a ticket to enter. \nPeople18 years and older need their own ticket

SUMMARY:Right in the Eye - Georges Melies live movie-concert
DESCRIPTION:Live music blends with classic film in this movie-concert by France’s Alcoléa & cie. A Philadelphia debut\, Right in the Eye celebrates Georges Méliès\, a pioneer of the cinema and inventor of special effects\, by adding an original\, multi-layered score to complement and interpret 12 of his otherwise silent films. A trio of musicians play an extraordinary range of 50 instruments\, from the classics to the obscure\, evoking the technical wizardry and playful creativity that defined Méliès’ work. This unique production puts music and film in perfect harmony to reimagine cinema’s early years.

SUMMARY:Mudlarking with Cory Kram
DESCRIPTION:Mudlarking is the act of looking for discarded remnants along creeks and riverbanks during low tide. In this workshop\, former Glen Foerd Artist in Residence Cory Kram will lead participants to the Poquessing Creek (a former dumping ground in the early 1900s) for a treasure hunt! \nAntique bottles\, ceramic shards\, buttons\, marbles\, and bottle-stoppers are just some of the many objects that visitors may find in the creek. Participants will collect these objects\, wash them\, and take them home as souvenirs. A corresponding creek clean-up will occur during the mudlarking. Let’s see what we can find! \nParticipants should dress in warm clothes and wear study shoes/boots. Note that the ground will be relatively solid due to the cold\, but feel free to bring a backup pair of shoes to change into. Gloves\, trash grabbers\, and bags will be provided. \nPlease reach out to Colleen at cwinslow@glenfoerd.org with any questions you may have.
