With a commitment to uplifting the local economy and amplifying the voices of nearby black and brown communities\, d’griot is currently thriving as a gallery\, event venue\, and catering service. By fostering authentic and beautiful spaces\, it nurtures an environment for education\, creativity\, and mutual support. In a world that urgently needs more healing spaces\, d’griot stands out as a beacon of holistic living\, interwoven with the belief that our destinies are interconnected\, echoing the profound wisdom of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. \n \nUse of Funds Raised\nD’Griot plans to use its funds to enhance its bar\, back kitchen\, and outside garden. This expansion aims to increase monthly revenue from $5K to $30K by fostering daily connections with neighbors. The project will create jobs and offer a positive community space for healing and connection\, contributing to the local economy and social fabric.

SUMMARY:What Good Is Eco-Art Without Community? w/ Keg De Souza and Alicia Grullon
DESCRIPTION:Join Ulises for ESSSSSS #8: “What Good Is Eco-Art Without Community?” at Ulises with Keg De Souza and Alicia Grullon.\n\n\nBuilding on Grullon’s 2023 Hyperallergic article “What Good Is Eco-Art Without Community?” This night of presentations brings together two artists\, Keg De Souza and Alicia Grullon\, to share their work and observations about the field. Join us to welcome them to Philadelphia and continue the discussion from past Eco-Social events. \n \nImages: Keg de Souza “Not a Drop to Drink” (2021) Arts House\, Naarm (Melbourne) Photo credit: Bryony Jackson; Grullon’s 2023 Hyperallergic article “What Good Is Eco-Art Without Community?” \n \nAlicia Grullón is a Bronx-based artist and organizer. Grullon’s social practice work extends to exploring how people relate to land in order to rally a transformation of our living by using performance and self-portraiture as a critique on the politics of presence\, an argument for the inclusion of underinvested communities in political and social spheres. She was a Moore College of Art and Design Walentas Fellow for 2020-2022\, and teaches at Queens College. Alicia Grullón has exhibited work at Wallach Art Gallery\, Columbia University; Bronx Museum of the Arts; and BRIC Arts Media House\, all in New York\, among others. Grullón’s legislative art project PERCENT FOR GREEN looks at climate change from the perspective of environmental injustices in the Bronx and has created a functioning green bill with Bronx residents. This project contributed to her acting as one of the co-lead organizers in the Bronx for the People’s Climate March. Grullón’s works have been shown in numerous group exhibitions including The 8th Floor\, Bronx Museum of the Arts\, BRIC House for Arts and Media\, School of Visual Arts\, El Museo del Barrio\, Columbia University\, Socrates Sculpture Park\, Performa 11\, Old Stone House and Art in Odd Places \n \nKeg de Souza is an artist of Goan ancestry who lives on unceded Gadigal land in Sydney. Architecturally trained\, she creates social and spatial environments\, making reference to her lived experiences of squatting and organising with projects that use plant and food politics\, temporary architecture\, publishing and radical pedagogy. De Souza also draws from personal experiences of colonialism to inform her layered projects that centre voices that are often marginalised\, for learning about Place. Themes of displacement – through lenses such as colonialism and gentrification – filter through her work\, sharing (often lesser-known) stories of plants\, people and Place. Keg is a trained bookbinder and is represented by Booklyn Artist Alliance\, NY for her artist’s books and zines which she has been publishing for over 20 years; has a Certificate in Botanical Illustration from The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh; holds a PhD\, through the Wominjeka Djeembana Research Lab\, MADA\, Monash University titled: Relationality in Place: Radical Pedagogy and Decolonial Space; was the 2022 Parramatta Artists Studios Creative Fellow and received the 2024 Dahl Fellowship from Eucalypt Australia. Keg is a part of the Food Art Research Network\, an international network of established artists and researchers that engage with the politics and aesthetics of food and was a founding member of SquatSpace an artist collective exploring the poetics and politics of space. \n \nAbout the Eco-Social Salon\, Site-Seeing\, and Screening Series: \nEco-Social (aka Eco-Social Salon\, Site-Seeing & Screening Series) is an event series and learning community that will convene seasonally in Philadelphia since 2023 where ecologically-themed artwork is presented and excursions taken. SUMMARY:Wondering About Wampum
DESCRIPTION:Join Chris Applegate from the Museum of Indian Culture in Allentown\, PA to learn more about how wampum beads were produced and traded.\n\n\nWondering About Wampum. Presented by the Museum of Indian Culture \na Special Program is for Teens and Adults \nAlthough shell beads have been around for thousands of years\, the cylindrical white and purple beads we recognize as wampum were mainly produced after European contact. Steel tools facilitated drilling the long\, small diameter holes. These beads held more value than their beauty. Colonists used them as currency. Native communities used them to commemorate important events or send messages. \nJoin Chris Applegate from the Museum of Indian Culture in Allentown\, PA to learn more about how wampum beads were produced and traded. Once in Native hands\, the beads were made into strands or woven into “belts” that could be used to identify the bearer\, send a message\, or record a treaty. \nMethods of bead weaving are demonstrated. The historic and current significance of well-known belts including the William Penn Belt\, the Hiawatha Belt\, and the Two Row Belt is covered. \nAfter the presentation\, attendees are encouraged to use the pump drill and bow looms that have been demonstrated. \n \nAccessibility Check-in: please contact us if you would like an accommodation to access this program

SUMMARY:Zero Bills\, Zero Carbon - new with EVs and IRA subsidies
DESCRIPTION:How to save money by cutting your carbon emission on your home & car. This new webinar by David Green includes homes\, EVs and IRA subsidies\n\n\nIn this free\, and highly-acclaimed webinar\, you will learn how\, with MA and IRA subsidies: \n\nyou can cut your home’s carbon emissions and bills by at least 50%\, and\nwhy electric vehicles are now cheaper to buy\, cheaper to maintain and cheaper to run than gas-powered cars.\n\nAll attendees will get a free copy of David Green’s book “Zero Carbon\, Zero Bills”. \nPresented by David Green who has cut his own home’s carbon emissions and bills to zero (making a 15% return on investment) and loves driving his Tesla Model S and Ford F150 Lightning for far less than their gas-powered equivalents\, and without range anxiety. The F150 has also powered my house for 24 hours during a grid outage. \nDavid Green has authored two books on cutting carbon emissions (endorsed by both Bill McKibben and Paul Hawken) and has created this webinar that thousands of people have seen seen. David is an energy geek with a BA in physics from Oxford University and a finance nerd with an MBA from Harvard Business School. David has retired from a career in biotechnology (he founded two companies\, was CEO of both and took both public on NASDAQ) and does not work for any installer or manufacturer of energy products – his advice is completely independent. \nThe presentation part of the webinar lasts about 45 minutes and then David will stay on the call until the last person’s question gets answered. \n\n\n\nThe author and presenter\, David Green\, turning on his solar panels.
