SUMMARY:Uncle Bobbie's X Eddie Glaude Jr. - Book Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome NYT bestselling author\, Eddie S. Glaude Jr. for his latest book\, “We Are The Leaders We Have Been Looking For”\n\n\nWe are excited to welcome\, Princeton University professor and New York Times bestselling author\, Eddie S. Glaude Jr. to discuss her newest book\, We Are The Leaders We Have Been Looking For. \nEddie will be in conversation with author\, activist and the owner of Uncle Bobbie’s Marc Lamont Hill. Q&A to follow. \nAll copies of We Are The Leaders available will be signed. \nYou don’t want to miss this! \n****** \nAbout the Book: \nFrom the author of the New York Times bestseller Begin Again\, a politically astute\, lyrical meditation on how ordinary Black Americans can shake off their reliance on a small group of professional politicians and pursue self-cultivation and grassroots movements to achieve a more just and perfect democracy. \nWe are more than the circumstances of our lives\, and what we do matters. In We Are the Leaders We Have Been Looking For\, one of the nation’s preeminent scholars and a New York Times bestselling author\, Eddie S. Glaude Jr.\, makes the case that the hard work of becoming a better person should be a critical feature of Black politics. Through virtuoso interpretations of Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, Malcolm X\, and Ella Baker\, Glaude shows how ordinary people have the capacity to be the heroes that our democracy so desperately requires\, rather than outsourcing their needs to leaders who purportedly represent them. \nBased on the Du Bois Lectures delivered at Harvard University\, the book begins with Glaude’s unease with the Obama years. He felt then\, and does even more urgently now\, that the excitement around the Obama presidency had become a disciplining tool to narrow legitimate forms of Black political dissent. This narrowing continues to undermine the well-being of Black communities. In response\, Glaude guides us away from the Scylla of enthusiastic reliance on elected leaders and the Charybdis of full surrender to a belief in unchanging political structures. Glaude weaves anecdotes about his own evolving views on Black politics together with the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson\, John Dewey\, Sheldon Wolin\, Toni Morrison\, James Baldwin\, and Ralph Ellison. \nNarrated with passion and philosophical intensity\, this book is a powerful reminder that if American democracy is to survive\, we must build a better society that derives its strength from the pew\, not the pulpit. \n****** \nDoors open at 6:00pm. \nBuy your book now and save on the General Admission fee! A ll tickets are non-refundable. \nStreet parking available. Wheelchair accessible entrance also available.

SUMMARY:Electricity Bills and Climate Change: Should Energy Hogs Pay More?
DESCRIPTION:Visiting Scholar Severin Borenstein delves into the costs driving up bills\, equitable solutions\, and the debate overburdening “energy hogs”.\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event. For those attending virtually\, a Zoom link will be sent out the day of the event.\nBoxed lunches will be available to go following the talk!\n\n\nRapidly rising electricity bills in a few states foreshadow the impact of climate change on utility customers everywhere. What costs are driving those bills and what are the options for covering them? Some alternatives focus on distributing these costs according to wealth or income\, while others would allocate a greater share to the heaviest electricity consumers\, the so-called “energy hogs.” Visiting Scholar Severin Borenstein discusses the equity and economic efficiency implications of each cost recovery approach\, and then takes a closer look at the arguments for having “energy hogs” bear a disproportionate share. \n \nSpeaker\nSeverin Borenstein is E.T. Grether Professor of Business Administration and Public Policy at the Haas School of Business and faculty director of the Energy Institute at Haas. He is also Director emeritus of the University of California Energy Institute (1994-2014). He received his AB from UC Berkeley and PhD in Economics from MIT. His research focuses on business competition\, strategy\, and regulation. He has published extensively on the airline industry\, the oil and gasoline industries\, and electricity markets. His current research projects include the economics of renewable energy\, economic policies for reducing greenhouse gases\, and alternative models of retail electricity pricing. Borenstein is also a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge\, MA. \nModerator\nSanya Carley is the faculty co-director of the Kleinman Center and Presidential Distinguished Professor of Energy Policy and City Planning at the Stuart Weitzman School of Design. She holds secondary appointments at the Wharton School and the School of Social Policy and Practice. She also co-directs the Energy Justice Lab and is a Resources for the Future (RFF) university fellow. \nCarley’s research focuses on energy justice and just transitions\, energy insecurity\, electricity and transportation markets\, and public perceptions of energy infrastructure and technologies. With the Energy Justice Lab team\, she built and maintains the Utility Disconnection Dashboard. Carley is an author of the Fifth National Climate Assessment report and a member of the Innovation Policy Forum and the Roundtable on Macroeconomics and Climate-related Risks and Opportunities\, respectively\, for the National Academies. \n\n\nPlease note this is a hybrid event. We look forward to welcoming guests to the Kleinman Center’s Energy Forum. In accordance with the University of Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 guidelines\, masks are optional for all visitors. Boxed lunches will be available to go following the event!

SUMMARY:Right to Thrive with Philly Thrive
DESCRIPTION:In this program we will tell community how Hilco has been in violation of environmental justice principles\, and what that means for you.\n\n\nPhilly Thrive organizes for Environmental and Social Justice since our start in 2015 organizing to shut down the PES oil refinery. Our organizing efforts won its closure in 2020. Since our beginning\, we’ve been dedicated to community investment and health for residents of Grays Ferry\, and in turn Philadelphia as a whole\, not only in receiving the Right to Breathe\, but the Right to Thrive! We do this by holding the developer who purchased the refinery land\, Hilco\, accountable to the community. We also do this by organizing for Housing Justice — because we know winning community investment from Hilco is a win when affected residents get to stay in their homes as well.  \nIn this teach-in\, you will hear our two-pronged plan to address these injustices: the People’s Environmental Justice Enforcement Agency and our Home Repairs housing justice campaign.  \nFirst\, hear how Philly Thrive formed the People’s Environmental Justice Enforcement Agency: Hilco may be able to breeze through approvals from our government\, but that is not the case with the Environmental Justice Permit that we\,the people\, have the power to authorize or deny. Hilco is failing the community by moving forward with construction (despite leaving community demands for environmental justice unfulfilled for 3 years)\, marking a turning point in the struggle for healing & repair at the former PES oil refinery land\, obtaining permits from our government that allow them to drive the redevelopment forward more than a year ahead of schedule…while environmental justice is left in the rearview. We know what this is about: corporations taking the quickest path to a profit\, while our government rubber stamps their plans\, just as we know it is often done with the gentrification housing issues of our neighborhoods.  \nThen\, hear how we have started our Housing Repairs campaign. Housing justice IS environmental justice and we all deserve safe\, green\, and affordable housing! At Philly Thrive\, we’re making sure that long-term residents are able to thrive by staying in their homes\, by advocating green home repairs\, which include weatherization and clean energy. Green home repairs make our communities safer\, more resilient\, and more sustainable!  \nWe hope to have you join us in this important opportunity. We will learn how building our capacity towards self-sufficiency and community resilience is done by organizing together for the environmental and community justice we deserve\, and by creating housing programs that enable us to take care of ourselves outside of the ways the systems fail us! \nThis event is presented in partnership with Da Vinci Art Alliance’s Everyday Futures Fest. DVAA’s month-long art and sustainability festival includes all-ages programming throughout Philadelphia for the month of April. SUMMARY:Sisters of the Yam - Work Makes Life Sweet
DESCRIPTION:Eat more delicious sweet potato and considering how “any task becomes sacred when we do it mindfully and with care.”\n\n\nChef Tonii is preparing more delicious sweet potatoes! We’ve had Sweet Potato Stew. Then there was the salad with sweet potato\, pistachios\, and mint inspired by Middle Eastern cuisine. Come see what’s next! \nInspired by Sisters of the Yam: Black Women and Self-Recovery by bell hooks. hooks encourages us to interrogate and transform every aspect of our lives in the pursuit of self-actualization and collective liberation. \nWe will focus on Chapter 3\, Work Makes Life Sweet\, where we consider whether our work is in alignment or conflict with our self-recovery.“Right Livelihood… embodies self-expression\, commitment\, mindfulness\, and conscious choice.” \nSisters of the Yam echoes and responds to the healers in Toni Cade Bambara’s The Salt Eaters. \n“Are you sure\, sweetheart\, that you want to be well?… Just so’s you’re sure\, sweetheart\, and ready to be healed\, cause wholeness is no trifling matter.” \nCheck out Sisters of the Yam: Black Women and Self-Recovery at the Free Library of Philadelphia.

SUMMARY:The Secret Lives of Spring Wildflowers: Section A
DESCRIPTION:Skunk cabbage\, bloodroot\, and trout lilies are among the first signs of spring and warmer weather ahead. Spring ephemerals and wildflowers must complete part of their life cycle before the tree canopy leafs out\, reducing light levels at the forest floor. Spring wildflowers have special adaptations to overcome these challenges\, and intricate relationships with pollinators and seed dispersers. Learn more about these wildflowers\, their life histories\, and plant-insect interactions\, and look for them during a guided walk in the gardens.\nThis program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center on Thursday\, April 25\, 2024 (Rain Date: Friday\, April 26).\nAbout the Instructor:\nEllen Lake\, PhD\, is the Director of Conservation and Research at Mt. Cuba Center. She taught environmental education and was the Education Director at the Brandywine and Red Clay Valley Associations. Ellen has a master’s degree in Entomology and Ph.D. in Entomology and Wildlife Ecology from the University of Delaware\, where she researched biological control of mile-a-minute weed and how to integrate weed management techniques to restore plant communities. Ellen has extensive experience researching insect-plant interactions\, including work for the USDA in the Greater Everglades ecosystem.

Before and after the walk\, your guides will answer questions on how this watershed ecosystem matters to the greater region far and wide.\nThis walk will repeat at this location on May 9th\, allowing us to see the woodland before and after its emergence into spring. While the distance and elevation experienced on this hike are not difficult\, it’s important to be prepared with footwear appropriate for roots\, rocks\, dirt and possibly mud. Dress in layers for the weather\, and bring along water and snacks for one or two hours in the woods. Duration will be approximately 2 – 2 1/2 hours.\nDistance:~ 2 miles\nLevel: Moderate (some inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nRegistration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations.\nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain or icy conditions. Service animals are always welcome.
