SUMMARY:Philadelphia Mid-Winter Bird Census
DESCRIPTION:Now running in its 39th year\, this census will gather data on wintering birds all over Philadelphia.\nThis is an all-day event that\, for some teams\, starts and ends with a search for owls. In the last few years\, this has resulted in around 107 species (typically besting all Christmas Bird Counts in the area). \nIf you are interested in participating\, please contact phillybirdcensus@gmail.com. \nYou can do this on your own (if you can ID sparrows\, you are good to go)\, or join one of the many teams at your favorite Philly birding location or while exploring a completely new area. \nThe individual territories largely overlapping with the city’s green spaces can be found here.\nWe are always open to including new locations that can be surveyed for many years.

Today\, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education\, not only through the museum\, but through a wide range of courses\, lectures\, field trips\, and children’s science programs. Donations also assist us in caring for the museum and library collections and in preserving our wonderful building\, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. To learn more about what we do please visit our website. \n\nRegistration Information\nIn keeping with its original charter\, admission is free—donations are suggested to ensure the future and quality of Wagner’s free education programs and to preserve its National Landmark building and collections. \nSuggested Donations \n$25/Family \n$10/adult \n$5/student \n$0 – Wagner members \nFor any questions\, please email tickets@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x17. \nIf you would like to check your membership status or become a member\, please email KellyT@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x11.

SUMMARY:The Wissahickon in December with Debbie Hoellein\, Jim McClory\, and Terry Fowler
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of Friends of Saylor Grove\nMeeting at Blue Bell Park\nOne reason we like hiking in the winter is that you can see clear across the Wissahickon. Join Debbie\, Jim\, and Terry on our first hike this winter season when we will not only see lovely vistas\, but also how the flora changes with the cold weather\, while beautiful rocks stay the same. And what type of fauna will we encounter in January? Our route to the other side of Lincoln Drive takes us through Historic Rittenhouse Town\, and the site of the McKinney Quarry and Saylor Grove.\nThis approximately 4 mile route has some rocky ascents and descents. Children 12 years of age and older are welcome when accompanied by an adult\, but no dogs except for service animals\, please.\nDistance: 4 miles\nLevel: Difficult (many inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nRegistration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations.\nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain or icy conditions. Service animals are always welcome. For more information contact Marisa Miller at miller@fow.org. Visit www.fow.org for updates.\nRegister below!

SUMMARY:Racial Equity\, Environmental Justice & Community Stewardship of Real Estate
DESCRIPTION:Community Land Stewardship work is one way to create climate resilience in a way that centers equity and racial justice.\n\n\nAs low-income BIPOC communities across the US continue to grapple with increasing racial\, health\, and economic disparities\, the root cause of these inequities remains the same—a country founded upon the slavery of Black People and the genocide of Indigengous People\, as well as extending US imperialism to other parts of the world. As a result of racist policies and practices\, our communities have become sacrifice zones for the benefit of whiter\, wealthier communities and community voices have been silenced\, limiting access to critical resources\, including health and housing. \n \nCommunity Ownership & Stewardship both center collective economics and self-determination which ensure residents have control over their own communities\, and that they share in all its work and wealth. Since traditional forms of land and resource ownership have extracted value from our communities\, we propose community control of assets as a strategy toward healing and justice by shifting toward a living economy. We create community control of assets and resources through community decision-making\, uplifting a model of public control over public resources for public good.
