SUMMARY:Amish Country Queer: A Night of Film\, Art & Drag
DESCRIPTION:An award-winning documentary\, a photo exhibition celebrating rural LGBTQ+ life\, and a homegrown drag show converge in one unforgettable night. \nAmish Country Queer is a film about Lancaster’s queer nightlife and drag culture\, and a story about what it means to be visibly\, joyfully\, unapologetically queer in a place the world told you wasn’t built for you. \nTulle Queer is an ongoing portrait series by trans artist Brady Pappas that honors the queer icons of the 717 region. Using tulle as a recurring visual motif\, the project creates a vibrant\, community-rooted celebration of visibility and resilience. \nThe Angel Hour is Lancaster’s second-longest-running drag show\, celebrating five years of glamour and sisterhood\, created by Charlize Angelz. \nThis is a night of celebration. Of queer bodies\, queer lives\, and queer autonomy. Of breaking the binaries and changing the narratives we’ve been handed about where we can live\, whom we can love\, and who we can be. Queerness has never been confined to city limits\, and this night proves it. \nAnd this is where the future gets made. Not at the center\, but at the fringes. \nAmish Country Queer: A Night of Film\, Art & Drag is presented by Little Echo Productions and co-presented by cinéSPEAK.

SUMMARY:No Country for Mothers Screening
DESCRIPTION:True statement: In Pennsylvania\, it is illegal to separate a puppy from its mother before 8 weeks of age. Yet 1 in 4 women return to work within just 10 days of giving birth because they can’t afford not to. \nJoin us for an evening featuring excerpts from the new documentary No Country for Mothers\, followed by a live conversation with Reshma Saujani (lawyer\, bestselling author\, activist\, and founder of Girls Who Code and Moms First.) \nTogether\, we’ll explore the culture wars surrounding American motherhood and why so many families lack the support they need. The film reveals that what many women experience isn’t personal failure – it’s the result of systems that were never designed to support families. \nThe evening concludes with a conversation led by The Fund for Women and Girls\, connecting the film’s themes to what’s happening locally and exploring opportunities for change. \nCome join us\, share your experience and be part of the solution. \nThis event is free and open to everyone. Registration is required.

SUMMARY:Gender Minorities in the Sciences Panel
DESCRIPTION:Scientists share their experiences and strategies for advancing equity and inclusion in STEM across gender-diverse communities.\n\n\nJoin us as the Gender Minorities in the Sciences Panel brings together scientists to share their experiences and strategies for advancing equity and inclusion in STEM across gender-diverse communities. \nWomen and gender minority scientists have made significant strides in overcoming gender bias in areas such as recruitment\, promotions\, publications\, salaries\, and funding over the past decade. Despite their growing involvement in the scientific community\, they remain underrepresented and face considerable challenges across various scientific disciplines. \nThe Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University and the Science History Institute are hosting the second Gender Minorities in the Sciences Panel. During this panel\, speakers will share their journeys\, experiences\, challenges\, and successes in building meaningful careers in science and technical fields. They will provide insights into how to advocate for oneself while fostering partnerships in male-dominated environments and discuss the unique experiences of scientists at the intersection of diverse identities. \nThis panel brings people together to raise awareness and advocate for equitable representation and leadership across gender lines in the sciences. It will also serve as an opportunity for networking\, community building\, and fostering meaningful dialogue about creating an inclusive workplace that emphasizes diversity\, equity\, access\, and leadership for all. \n\n\nAbout This Event\nThis lecture is part of our Science and Society speaker series\, which explores the history of science embedded in our everyday lives. We invite scientists\, historians\, policymakers\, and educators for engaging\, in-depth conversations that expand our perspectives. Program formats include lectures\, interviews\, roundtables\, and book launches. Science and Society events are curated for an adult audience\, fostering curiosity\, conversation\, and interactivity. Each evening concludes with a free reception with the speakers.

SUMMARY:Walking the Schuylkill: Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of a photography exhibit that follows the Schuylkill River captured by maritime museum expert John Brady.\n\n\nJoin us in celebration of the opening reception to preview the show\, meet the photographer John Brady\, and enjoy lite fare and drinks with the Fairmount Water Works community! \nWalking the Schuylkill \nOn display at Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center from Sept. 16\, 2026 – Jan. 8\, 2027 \nWilliam Penn placed the city where it is because of the Schuylkill River\, guaranteeing the city and the river a prominent place in American history. Over time\, the Schuylkill has served the city and its industry\, first with a canal system and later with railroads and highways in the river’s flood plain. Factories and mills were built along its full length. Industry radically changed the river. Along with bringing farm products and coal to the city. The Schuylkill River provided drinking water. These purposes often collided; eventually drinking water won out. The environmental movement changed the river as radically as the industrial age had. These changes\, and contemporary uses\, leave imprints. “Walking the Schuylkill” intends to capture and highlight those marks\, illustrating the character of the modern Schuylkill River. \nBio \nIn 2021\, John Brady retired from a long career in maritime museums and ship preservation. He has worked at South Street Seaport Museum\, The Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild\, and the Independence Seaport Museum. For thirty-two of these years\, he was a boat builder and shipwright. Under his leadership\, the Independence Seaport Museum’s boat shop rose to national prominence while focusing on constructing and preserving New Jersey and Delaware River watercraft. Following this\, he became President and CEO of the Independence Seaport Museum\, a post he held for ten years. Since leaving the museum world\, he has focused on photography and video work\, primarily featuring the waterways around Philadelphia.

SUMMARY:Diane Burko: Extraction\, Dialogue of Extremes
DESCRIPTION:August 24 – October 17\, 2026\nRUMOCA at 301 High Street\nIntersections of Art and Science: Communication and Collaboration\nSeptember 16th\, 4:00 – 5:00 PM with reception to follow \nIn collaboration with the Arctic Radium Isotope Observing Network (ARION) research project led by Rowan Associate Professor Dr. Lauren E. Kipp\, with Dr. Matt Charette and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution\, Diane Burko: Extraction\, A Dialogue of Extremes is the community engagement component of the National Science Foundation grant that has funded the research. \nPulling from scientific drawings and maps provided by the research team\, artist Diane Burko has depicted in her paintings the chemical changes and flow of elements recorded in the Arctic. Rendered as markings and data-like graphs\, these flows circulate within and around recurring spherical forms that anchor the paintings. The compositions feel distant and restrained\, their cool detachment echoing the region’s vast isolation\, yet they remain quietly captivating\, amplifying the Arctic’s environmental extremities. \nIn contrast\, a second body of work responds to the corporate mining industry and deforestation of the Amazon rainforest. Here\, the sphere reappears\, interchanging perspectives by encasing sites of extraction\, or amplifying the indigenous areas that have been impacted. Fragments of charred bark protrude from the surface of these paintings\, focusing attention on these locations as if viewed under a microscope. Unlike the Arctic works\, these paintings are intimate but foreboding and unavoidably dominant.

SUMMARY:Priority Hoarding: A Retrospectacle
DESCRIPTION:“Where our baggage is yours!” \nWelcome to the Bearded Ladies’ Hairport\, an interactive installation & performance series built on 16-years of accumulated baggage from a queer cabaret company devoted to art\, care\, mess\, and community. While you’re waiting for a flight that may never take off\, unpack your baggage and rifle through some of ours. You may recognize something as your own\, or find something you never knew you were carrying. \nMade for anyone who has ever lost a bag\, gotten stuck\, or missed a (metaphoric) flight\, this trans(formational) installation asks: how do you know it’s time to move on when you don’t know where you’re going? \nProduced by The Bearded Ladies Cabaret\nPart of FringeArt’s 2026 Festival & Collective Futures \nInstallation on view September 10-December 20\, 2026\nat The Hairport | 444 N 3rd Street\, Philadelphia PA 19123 \nInstallation hours:\nWednesday\, Thursday & Friday 4-9PM | Last timed entry at 8:15PM\nSaturday & Sunday 11AM-3PM| Last timed entry at 2:15PM \nLive events at The Hairport | Saturdays at 8PM \nThe Hairport is an interactive\, immersive installation filled with costumes\, cardboard props\, and other ephemera from the Bearded Ladies Cabaret’s 16-year performance history. Visitors will make their way through a sprawling multi-room space made to look like a fantastical\, metaphorical “airport”. Visitors will be invited to interact with components of the installation and may encounter docents in guiding roles. The experience will culminate in a “lounge” space full of “Bearded baggage” which will also serve as the performance site for the Now Hoarding: In-Flight Entertainment live event series. \nIt will take visitors approximately 60-75 minutes to view the entirety of the Priority Hoarding installation. Groups of 6 will enter the installation\, at 15-minute timed entry intervals. An opportunity to ride a Surrey bike is offered but not required.
