SUMMARY:The Potential for Mycofiltration of E. coli Pollution in The Crum Creek
DESCRIPTION:The Potential for Mycofiltration of E. coli Pollution in The Crum Creek Using T. versicolor and P. ostreatus \nThe Philadelphia Mycology Club  welcomes you to join us in our fifth installation of bimonthly meetings at the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences! We are excited to have a regular meeting space to work on some more in-depth community science projects and to welcome academic and professional mycologists to speak to our community about their work. \nEvent Description: \nMycoremediation is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional wastewater and drinking water treatment\, as well as other environmental remediation methods. This project will design a mycofiltration system using mushroom species Trametes versicolor and Pleurotus ostreatus. Water from a section of the Crum Creek\, located in Swarthmore\, Pennsylvania\, U.S.A\, will be sampled and filtered through this system to remove Escherichia coli (E. coli). The mycofiltered water will be compared to the Environmental Protection Agency standards for E. coli concentrations in recreational and drinking water to measure how effective T. versicolor or P. ostreatus may be at removing E. coli present in freshwater drinking sources. \nRegistration is limited. Please register in advance and cancel your tickets if you find you can no longer attend this event. \nEnter the Academy of Natural Sciences through the 19th Street entrance. If arriving late\, please ask to be directed to the BEES classroom. \n**This event is free and open to everyone. The PMC is funded entirely through donations. If you are able\, please consider giving an amount of your choice at checkout** \nBy registering for this event you grant the Philadelphia Mycology Club to use photographs and/or video of you taken at the event in publications\, online\, and in other communications related to the Philadelphia Mycology Club.

SUMMARY:Counter Cartographies: Mapping Spaces of the Unhoused in Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Counter Cartographies is a community art project in collaboration with unhoused shelter residents served by Bethesda Project.\n\n\nCounter Cartographies is a community art project in collaboration with unhoused shelter residents served by Bethesda Project. The project spatially maps residents’ lived relationships with the city of Philadelphia – its paths\, barriers\, and refuges – and transforms those maps into collective art. The project’s artmaking draws on ethnographic mapping practices to challenge how power shapes spaces and their representations\, using maps grounded in community experience and co-creation to collaboratively create art. \nThis free event will take place at the Rotunda from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Light refreshments from Renata’s Kitchen will be provided. \nThis project was conceptualized and initiated by volunteer contributor Nayantara Ghosh\, who continues to participate in a volunteer capacity. Collaborators include Bethesda Project residents\, staff\, and volunteers\, and Design Fellows through PennPraxis and Civic House (University of Pennsylvania). Support for this project has been provided by The Sachs Program for Arts Innovation.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: What Awaits the Naughty
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “What Awaits the Naughty\,” a guide to supernatural beings around the world who keep kids in line and Christmas weird\, with Linda Lee\, lecturer in folklore and fairy tales at the University of Pennsylvania. \nThe song says “Santa Claus is coming to town\,” not “Santa Claus is coming specifically to your house.” In many parts of the world\, children who misbehave expect visitors of an entirely different sort\, in the form of unwelcome bringers of punishment and fear. \nCome to Fishtown’s Black Squirrel Club to get the lowdown on strange beings that prowl the long nights during the Christmas and Yule season. Linda Lee\, a scholar of folklore and fairy tales who has taught at Penn and other universities throughout the region\, will discuss a host of entities who appear at this time of year to make the naughty rethink their ways. \nHigh on her list will be Krampus\, the goat-like\, devilish being from Central and Eastern Europe who carries chains and punishes naughty children with a birch rod. \nLooking to Iceland\, Lee will tell us about that nation’s Yule trolls and its monstrous Yule Cat\, Jólakötturinn\, known to devour those who don’t receive new clothes to wear on Christmas Eve. \nWe’ll also get to know La Befana\, an Italian witch who rides a broomstick and visits homes on Epiphany. Turning her attention closer to home\, Lee will discuss the origins and ways of Pennsylvania-famous Belsnickel\, a sketchy-looking import from southwest Germany who prowls these parts handing out candy or coal. \nWe’ll learn about the traditions associated with each of these figures and how each one fits into celebrations of Christmas\, Yule\, or the winter seasons. Among the questions we’ll consider: Why do so many of them enforce good behavior? Should we be worried? \nLee’s audience has loved this talk when she gave it in the past. You’ll be glad you have survived Krampus long enough to be on hand for Lee’s return to discuss him. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage by Canva.
