SUMMARY:Intermediate Wheel Throwing
DESCRIPTION:This class is perfect for intermediate to advanced students who are interested in fine tuning their wheel throwing skills. We will practice throwing more complicated forms including lidded jars\, vases\, closed forms\, and more. We will also discuss techniques related to trimming\, carving\, glazing and surface decoration. If you have some wheel throwing experience and you are looking to grow and explore within the wonderful world of ceramics\, this is the perfect class for you! \nClass will run Tuesday nights October 28th – December 2nd 6-9pm \n—— \nPlease note that this workshop takes place in the Utility Works basement\, which is only accessible via stairs. The class requires participants to be able to sit and/or stand for at least three hours and use their hands for two hours. You must be able to lift 25lbs. There are two gender-neutral bathrooms available for students\, including one that is ADA accessible. If you have specific accessibility needs or questions\, please contact us in advance so we can discuss potential accommodations.

SUMMARY:Thanksgiving Appetite Builder with Ted Apple and Eric Dahlberg
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of Stacey Gray\nMeeting at Valley Green Inn (see map here)\nThe northern parking lot can be accessed by Wises Mill Road\, and the southern by Valley Green Road. Overflow parking is in the Upper Lot.\nThere are bathrooms available for use at the Inn.\nJoin FOW Trail Ambassadors Ted Apple and Eric Dahlberg for a moderately paced hike on the beautiful trails of the Wissahickon Valley. We will cover between four and six miles (depending on the group and trails chosen) as we enjoy building our appetites for Thanksgiving dinner while viewing the part in the late fall. While the leaves may be mostly gone\, this allows for great views of the park and Wissahickon Creek.\nWell behaved dogs on leashes are welcome as are children 12 and up able to keep the pace.\nHiking boots and poles are strongly recommended. Depending on the weather\, trail conditions and water levels\, there may be some water crossings. These should be able to be traversed without getting feet wet by going from stone to stone.\nDistance: 4-6 miles\nLevel: Moderate (some inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nAudience: Ages 12+\nRegistration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations. \nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. However\, we reserve the right to pause and enjoy whatever surprises nature offers.\nPlease come prepared to walk on a mix of asphalt\, gravel\, and natural surfaces. Solid hiking shoes are a must\, and hiking poles are recommended. Hikes are not suitable for those with limited mobility. Please make sure to pre-register\, as this program takes place outside our normal operating hours. GATES OPEN AT 7:45 am. First we remove invasive plants then plant native trees and shrubs that can handle both drought and wet conditions. The funding came initially from a riparian buffer grant to help divert storm water in a priority flood zone. This will provide natural habitat for wildlife and migrating birds while native flowering shrubs feed pollinators and flowering native trees help feed other insects. \n \n\nMore about this project\nPhoto Gallery / History\n\nSpecies totals \nWe planted 961 Trees of 14 native to Pennsylvania species from 2020 to 2022. \n225 trees in 2020\, 325 trees in 2021 and 411 trees in 2022. \n275 Shrubs from 8 native berrying species were planted between 2020 and 2022. 100 shrubs in 2020\, 25 in 2021 and 125 more 2022. \nTrees: \n\n183 Sycamore\n150 River Birch\n130 Pin Oaks\n125 Tulip Poplar\n100 Paw Paw\n47 Swamp White Oak\n50 Sassafras\n20 Sweet Bay Magnolia\n25 Black Gum\n25 Black Willow Oak\n25 Red Oaks\n8 Red Buds\n6 Sweetgum\n5 White Pine\n\nShrubs: \n\n50 Elderberry\n50 Winterberry\n50 Black choke berry\n25 WitchHazel\n25 Red Choke Berry\n25 Grey dogwood\n25 Red Dogwood\n25 Spice Bush\n\n \nHistory and Progress of this project:\nWe continually need help tree tending the weeding 1236 Native Trees and Shrubs \nFirst\, in September 2020\, we planted 100 Native trees / 22 Native shrubs with a fancy metal cage and large tree riparian grant from Tree Vitalize. \nIn October 2020 we planted an additional 125 trees and 75 Shrubs from a different grant from 10 million trees in the 2nd phase of the project. \nIn Spring 2021\, in our the 3rd Phase of the Neshaminy State Park Reforestation Project we planted 125 nice larger trees in fancy deer protection metal cages from TreeVitalize. \nIn the 4th Phase also in the spring of 2021 we planted another 200 bare root trees (Sycamore \, Tulip Poplar) in Tubex from a different grant from Keystone 10 million trees. \nIn the 5th Phase in Spring of 2022 we planted 2 areas in Neshaminy State Park with an additional 655 trees. 30 larger trees for a separate grove funded by Excel Events while an additional 600 trees and shrubs were provided through our partner Keystone 10 Million Trees (Chesapeake Bay Foundation). \n\n\n* Project update 5-11-22\nOn Saturday 5-28-22 we are still planting trees and Shrubs.
