SUMMARY:Clay Play Open Studio Making
DESCRIPTION:Come out and touch some clay!\n\n\nThis is an open session clay making workshop. Each person will receive 1-2 pounds of clay per session and access to our basic tools and supplies. Pieces can be glazed with color and will be once fired and ready for pickup in 3-4 weeks. We will have limited colors available and suggest that you purchase your own Stroke and Coat glaze if you’d like consistent color and control. You’re welcome to bring any of your own tools. \nThe instructor leading your session will have a basic project that you can build if you aren’t working independantly. Some sessions will be more guided than others. \n \nFor most people we recommend that you can complete your piece in the 2 hour session\, leave it at the studio to dry and be fired for you. Alternatively you can come to this session\, take your piece home to finish and dry it fully\, then bring it back in the future to have it fired. We will have a clay artist on site that can answer technical questions and get you started with a project idea. \nAny unfinished clay pieces should go home with you. We will do our best to provide you with plastic and wrap enough to walk out with your piece so you can keep it moist enough to complete it and dry it ahead of firing. Please plan ahead if you know you were looking to make something complex that you’ll want to take home and continue working on.This is an ongoing workshop offering every month except through the Summer \n \nSuggested age is adults but ages 7+up can attend along with a paying adult. \n \nAbout your instructors: \nCassie Jones (pronouns: She/They) is the craft coven founder and lead organizer. She has her hands in most crafts but has a great passion for anything scultping. When running open studio you can expect a concentration on non-funtional applications and decorative projects. Currently working on staff at Black Hound Clay studio Cassie has also worked many years at Painting with a Twist in Philadelphia\, run a leather brand CUSP by Cassie\, is building a line of chain stitch embroidered patches\, as well as many other ventures since graduating from The Savannah College of Art and Design in 2010. \n \n(on teaching haitus until March while building houses in MOAB) \nClay artist Sea Star (pronouns: they/them and she/her) has been making sculptures with clay since they were 2 years old. The material has been a great exercise in play\, design\, and patience. Over the years\, they have harvested and processed unique clays from Maine to Tennessee to Puerto Rico. In 2022 Sea earned a BFA in Interdisciplinary Sculpture from MICA and currently works as a Glaze and Decoration Technician for a Philadelphia pottery manufacturer. \n \nAbout the space:This event is located in the Starr Garden Playground rec center. When you enter the gates for the playground you will walk to the right of the building to the entrance that is facing Lombard Street. The rec center is mostly used for after school programs and kids camps but is empty in the evenings so they allow us to have adult programming. You’re welcome to bring your own water bottle or snacks\, and there will be light music and a social studio atmosphere rather than a classroom. \nOrganized by The Craft Coven\, this event is part of a community oriented series of creative enrichment projects focused on affordability for all. For more information on the group’s missions and to get involved more widely check out https://www.TheCraftCoven.org and become a Member for all the inside opportunities and classes. If you woud like updates on pieces that are in the firing process please watch the IG account @CassiesCraftCoven for updates\, or email Info@TheCraftCoven.org with the date you attended.

SUMMARY:Weeknights at the Wagner: Art\, Science\, and the "Super/Natural"
DESCRIPTION:Artist Judith Schaechter discusses her monumental exhibit Super/Natural and how she combines science and art in her work to conjure wonder.\n\n\nWEEKNIGHTS AT THE WAGNER\nIn Conversation with Judith Schaechter: Art\, Science\, and the “Super/Natural”\n \nAcclaimed stained glass artist Judith Schaechter will discuss her immersive installation “Super/Natural”—a luminous\, three-tiered cosmos rendered in glass. The work draws on her residency at the Penn Center for Neuroaesthetics\, incorporating insights from biophilic design and the rich history of women’s contributions to botanical art. “Super/Natural” reimagines nature as a space of awe and contemplation\, inviting viewers into a renewed sense of wonder and connection with the living world. \nThe daughter of renowned microbiologist Elio Schaechter\, Judith will also explore the interplay between art and science. Through the lens of her own work\, she will consider where these disciplines intersect\, where they diverge\, and whether true objectivity is even possible in a world observed from within one’s own mind. \nAn evening lecture series\, Weeknights at the Wagner\, invites experts into our Victorian lecture hall to speak on a range of science and history of science related subjects. Each talk includes a Q&A with the speaker. \n“Super/Natural” is on view at the Michener Art Museum through September 14th\, and will then be on view at the Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco\, California. \n \nAbout the Speaker\nJudith Schaechter lives and works in Philadelphia. Her work is collected internationally and is represented in the collections of the Smithsonian\, the Metropolitan Museum in New York\, the Victoria and Albert in London and the Hermitage\, among others. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2005 and her work was in the 2002 Whitney Biennial. In 2013\, Judith was inducted to the College of Fellows of the American Craft Council. She received a lifetime achievement award from the Glass Art Society in 2022 and in 2023\, she was named a Smithsonian Visionary Artist. \nIn 2020-21\, Judith’s work was the subject of a retrospective exhibition organized by the Memorial Art Gallery of Rochester\, NY\, which traveled to the Toledo Museum and the Des Moines Art Center. \n \n\n\n\n \nA dream that keeps growing… \nIn 1855\, William Wagner had a dream of providing free science education to anyone who wanted to learn\, regardless of background or ability to pay. Today\, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education\, not only through the museum\, but through a wide range of courses\, lectures\, field trips\, and children’s science programs. Donations also assist us in caring for the museum and library collections and in preserving our wonderful building\, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. To learn more about what we do please visit our website. \n\nRegistration Information\nIn keeping with its original charter\, admission to the lecture is free—donations are suggested to ensure the future and quality of Wagner’s free education programs and to preserve its National Landmark building and collections. \nSuggested Donations \n$10/adult \n$5/student \nFor any questions\, please email communications@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x17. \nIf you would like to check your membership status or become a member\, please email KellyT@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x11. \n \nImages: \nDetail shots of “Super/Natural\,” stained glass dome structure. SUMMARY:Dinner with King Tut
DESCRIPTION:Join author Sam Kean for an archaeological experience like no other. \nWhat does history taste like? How about the smell? Sound and touch? \nExperimental archeologists have gone rogue and immersed themselves fully into the material landscape of a time long ago. Sam Kean’s latest book\, “Dinner with King Tut\,” tells about his time learning with this team of innovative researchers across the globe to uncover what life was really like for our ancient ancestors. From firing medieval catapults\, trying his hand at ancient surgery and tattooing\, to building Roman-style roads\, this is sure to be an exciting tale of history’s often neglected tastes\, textures\, sounds\, and smells that were an intimate part of our ancestors’ lives.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Love Sick in the West Bank & Coyotes
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, December 11 at 7 PM for a screening of Love Sick in the West Bank & Coyotes\, the acclaimed 20-minute short film recently awarded Best Short at the BFI Film Festival. \nAbout Love Sick in the West Bank \nA Palestinian family hosts a young American tourist after a simple misunderstanding. But as chaos unfolds in their village\, it doesn’t take too long for them to become part of the absurd mayhem that immediately ensues. \nAbout Coyotes \nSet on a desolate night in the occupied West Bank\, Coyotes follows young surgeon Lubna as an unexpected breakdown on a remote road leads to an unsettling encounter with a stranger. Blending thriller elements with sharp political insight\, director Said Zagha offers a gripping look at autonomy\, vulnerability\, and the pressures facing Palestinians simply trying to live their lives. Inspired by real accounts\, Coyotes reframes familiar narratives with complex characters and a tense\, atmospheric unfolding that highlights the emotional and political landscape of the region. \nThe screening will be followed by a pre-recorded interview with the director of both films\, Said Zagha and film critic\, Joseph Fahim. Tickets are pay-as-you-wish\, with a suggested donation of $10.
