SUMMARY:Chestnut Hill Conservancy's Discovering: Pastorius Park
DESCRIPTION:The Discovering series\, one of the Chestnut Hill Conservancy’s signature public programs\, spotlights the area’s rich architecture\, history\, and natural beauty through guided tours and lectures\, offering Conservancy members discounted tickets.\nConservancy members enjoy discounted tickets and exclusive access to special events\, fostering deeper connections throughout the Wissahickon watershed. Join today to receive program discounts and help preserve the stories and spaces that define our community.\nWednesday\, February 11\, 2026\nVirtual\, via Zoom | 7:00–8:30 PM\nRegistration: $20 for conservancy members | $25 for non-members\nAdvance registration is required.\nClick Here to Register.\nJoin the Chestnut Hill Conservancy for a two-part edition of Discovering focused on Pastorius Park. The series opens with a virtual lecture on Wednesday\, February 11\, exploring a century of design\, stewardship\, and renewal\, followed by a moderated Q&A.\nNestled in the heart of Chestnut Hill\, in Northwest Philadelphia\, Pastorius Park is far more than a neighborhood green. Designed and constructed during the New Deal era and shaped by earlier Olmsted Brothers planning efforts\, the park reflects a long arc of civic vision\, community advocacy\, and evolving stewardship. Join landscape historian Rob Fleming\, ASLA\, and park steward James McNabb for a richly illustrated lecture exploring newly compiled research from their forthcoming Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) submission.\nDrawing from historic drawings\, rare archival photographs\, and contemporary documentation\, the talk traces the park’s origins as an unrealized traffic circle\, its transformation under WPA designers such as Frederick W. Peck and Stephen Ford\, and the significant restoration and ecological renewal efforts led by the Friends of Pastorius Park from 1987 to the present. The program will also preview new GIS-based mapping and tree inventory work completed in partnership with the Morris Arboretum.\nThis session will conclude with Q&A. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of Pastorius Park as a rare example of an intact 1930s civic landscape that now serves as a Level I accredited arboretum and a model for community-driven stewardship.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: The Dark Side of Fairy-Tale Romance
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “The Dark Side of Fairy-Tale Romance\,” on the nightmarish elements of the tales we’ve repackaged as the stuff of lovers’ dreams\, with Linda Lee\, lecturer in folklore and fairy tales at the University of Pennsylvania. \nFrom romcoms to reality TV shows to wedding venues to Valentine’s Day\, we’re inundated with messages idealizing the idea of a “fairy-tale romance.” But the fairy tales underlying all the hype about charming princes\, grand balls\, true love’s kiss\, and the happily-ever-after actually can be profoundly unsettling and full of reasons to run like hell. \nGain an appreciation of how modern society glosses over the darker elements of fairy tales with Linda Lee\, who previously has given excellent Profs and Pints talks on witches and on Christmas folklore. \nShe’ll begin by discussing how much the idea of fairy-tale romance pervades mainstream media and popular culture\, giving her audience a brief tour of fairy-tale romance tropes across genres and in movies\, television\, advertising\, video games\, and elsewhere. \nIt’s understandable that people might swoon over canonical fairy tales’ fancy dresses\, crowded ballrooms\, expansive libraries\, and magical enchantments. But the romances at the core of the actual fairy tales often can be quite problematic\, and we’ll also look at those. \n“Cinderella\,” for example\, depicts women competing for male attention in ways that involve extreme measures like self-harm. Dead mothers\, abusive stepparents\, and family pressure to marry factor in as well. \nIn “Beauty and the Beast” a younger daughter is expected to sacrifice her future to rectify her father’s mistake. Other beastly elements of the tale: dubious consent\, arranged marriages\, anger management issues\, monstrous love interests\, isolation\, manipulation\, and possibly Stockholm syndrome. \nIn “Snow White” a young girl’s seemingly dead body is an object of desire\, and we’re told of pedophilia\, the threat of violence\, cannibalism\, necrophilia\, and consent violation. “Sleeping Beauty” features a prince who believes he’s entitled to sexual access to a sleeping princess\, as well as adultery\, cannibalism\, and abandonment. \nYou’ll come away with a deeper appreciation of the tales themselves and reason to roll your eyes at those who try to sell you on fairy-tale romance as an ideal. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage: A Jennie Harbour illustration of “Sleeping Beauty” from My Book of Favourite Fairy Tales\, published in 1921. (Public domain.)

SUMMARY:The Truth about Sign Language Acquisition
DESCRIPTION:The natural sign languages used in deaf communities are rich and structured\, in the same way that languages around the world are. Even still\, there are many misconceptions about whether or not it is appropriate for hearing parents of deaf children to sign with them. This presentation will show what it looks like for a child to become a bimodal bilingual\, using two languages in two modalities (speech and sign)\, and how hearing parents can be part of this journey.

SUMMARY:Bad Naturalist | Author Visit - Paula Whyman
DESCRIPTION:Paula Whyman author of Bad Naturalist is coming to campus!\n\n\nWhen Paula Whyman first climbs a peak in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in search of a home in the country\, she has no idea how quickly her tidy backyard ecology project will become a massive endeavor. She soon discovers just how much she has to learn about hands-on conservation work. Bad Naturalist is a memoir about Paula Whyman’s attempts to restore native meadows on a 200-acre mountaintop–about the obstacles she encountered\, the mistakes she made\, the failures and the all-important successes\, and the discoveries she made along the way. Douglas Tallamy calls Bad Naturalist “self-deprecating\, humorous\, and thoroughly engaging.” Washington Gardener calls it “glorious.”Whyman will share the story of her efforts to restore the land\, and she’ll answer audience questions. \nThis event will take place in VCAM 001. Her talk will be followed by a book signing. Copies of the book will be available for sale at the event in collaboration with Narberth Bookshop. \nNarberth Bookshop Information \nCurrent Hours: Sun – Mon: Noon – 5\, Tues – Sat: 11 – 7 \nNARBERTH BOOKSHOPA COMMUNITY OF READERS\, WRITERS\, AND LIFELONG LEARNERS \n221 Haverford Ave. Narberth\, PA 19072 610-664-1112 \nnarberthbookshop@gmail.com \nwww.narberthbookshop.com \nProud member of iNDiE MAiN LiNE! \n\n\n\nPaula Whyman Bio \nPaula Whyman is the author of Bad Naturalist and a finalist for the Philip D. DESCRIPTION:Looking to increase your native plants presence? Participants will leave with 1 or 2 sets ready to put in your gardens/backyards.\n\n\nWinter sowing is an easy\, low-cost gardening technique where seeds are planted in recycled plastic containers (like milk jugs) and left outdoors in winter to experience natural cold stratification\, germinating in spring when conditions are right\, creating strong\, pre-hardened seedlings without needing grow lights or heat mats\, perfect for many perennials\, native plants\, herbs\, and cool-season veggies.
