SUMMARY:Clay Play Open Studio Making
DESCRIPTION:Come out and touch some clay!\n\n\nThis is an open session clay making workshop. Each person will receive 1-2 pounds of clay per session and access to our basic tools and supplies. Pieces can be glazed with color and will be once fired and ready for pickup in 3-4 weeks. We will have limited colors available and suggest that you purchase your own Stroke and Coat glaze if you’d like consistent color and control. You’re welcome to bring any of your own tools. \nThe instructor leading your session will have a basic project that you can build if you aren’t working independantly. Some sessions will be more guided than others. \n \nFor most people we recommend that you can complete your piece in the 2 hour session\, leave it at the studio to dry and be fired for you. Alternatively you can come to this session\, take your piece home to finish and dry it fully\, then bring it back in the future to have it fired. We will have a clay artist on site that can answer technical questions and get you started with a project idea. \nAny unfinished clay pieces should go home with you. We will do our best to provide you with plastic and wrap enough to walk out with your piece so you can keep it moist enough to complete it and dry it ahead of firing. Please plan ahead if you know you were looking to make something complex that you’ll want to take home and continue working on.This is an ongoing workshop offering every month except through the Summer \n \nSuggested age is adults but ages 7+up can attend along with a paying adult. \n \nAbout your instructors: \nCassie Jones (pronouns: She/They) is the craft coven founder and lead organizer. She has her hands in most crafts but has a great passion for anything scultping. When running open studio you can expect a concentration on non-funtional applications and decorative projects. Currently working on staff at Black Hound Clay studio Cassie has also worked many years at Painting with a Twist in Philadelphia\, run a leather brand CUSP by Cassie\, is building a line of chain stitch embroidered patches\, as well as many other ventures since graduating from The Savannah College of Art and Design in 2010. \n \n(on teaching haitus until March while building houses in MOAB) \nClay artist Sea Star (pronouns: they/them and she/her) has been making sculptures with clay since they were 2 years old. The material has been a great exercise in play\, design\, and patience. Over the years\, they have harvested and processed unique clays from Maine to Tennessee to Puerto Rico. In 2022 Sea earned a BFA in Interdisciplinary Sculpture from MICA and currently works as a Glaze and Decoration Technician for a Philadelphia pottery manufacturer. \n \nAbout the space:This event is located in the Starr Garden Playground rec center. When you enter the gates for the playground you will walk to the right of the building to the entrance that is facing Lombard Street. The rec center is mostly used for after school programs and kids camps but is empty in the evenings so they allow us to have adult programming. You’re welcome to bring your own water bottle or snacks\, and there will be light music and a social studio atmosphere rather than a classroom. \nOrganized by The Craft Coven\, this event is part of a community oriented series of creative enrichment projects focused on affordability for all. For more information on the group’s missions and to get involved more widely check out https://www.TheCraftCoven.org and become a Member for all the inside opportunities and classes. If you woud like updates on pieces that are in the firing process please watch the IG account @CassiesCraftCoven for updates\, or email Info@TheCraftCoven.org with the date you attended.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: Sex with Shakespeare
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Sex with Shakespeare\,” a surprising look at how the Bard thought about gender and sexuality and how it influenced his works\, with Abdulhamit Arvas\, scholar and historian of sexuality and assistant professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania. \nBefore “gender” became a culture-war keyword\, London audiences watched William Shakespeare’s plays with an open secret: Because women were barred from the public stage\, every Juliet\, Desdemona\, and Rosalind was played by a boy actor. \nWhat did that theatrical reality do to ideas of masculinity\, femininity\, desire—and to the plays themselves? \nHear such questions tackled in a talk that will use Shakespeare’s work as a vivid guide to a world whose assumptions about bodies\, desire\, and intimacy will seem both recognizable and surprisingly alien. \nWith sharp\, accessible examples from Shakespeare’s plays and the histories around them\, Dr. Arvas will trace how modern assumptions about gender and sexuality\, as well as love\, emerged over time. He’ll invite us to read Shakespeare not as a mirror of the present\, but as a window to see how our thoughts about the body—and the meanings we attach to our body and its intimacies—all have a history. \nInstead of treating Shakespeare as timeless\, this talk will ask what his plays reveal about the historical ideas that once organized everyday life. It will discuss how bodies were classified\, how difference was explained\, what counted as normal\, sinful\, healthy\, or “natural\,” and why categories we take for granted today did not always exist in the same form. \nWe’ll look at whether Shakespeare’s world recognized anything like “sexual orientation” and whether the gender binary was as stable—or as important—then as it seems now. We’ll explore how religion\, medicine\, and law shape what people believed about sex and desire. \nYou’ll be invited to consider: What changed between then and now and why do those changes matter for how we read Shakespeare today? What was love back then? What is it today? (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage by Canva

SUMMARY:Unraveling Botanical Names (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Scientific names offer precision and accuracy when identifying plants\, but they can also intimidate even the most seasoned gardener. Élan Alford\, Mt. Cuba’s conservation scientist\, breaks down the various components in a Latin binomial\, including why plants are named in this way and what a Latin name can teach us about a plant. This introductory course leaves you well prepared for any magazine article\, nursery catalog\, or class with a strong Latin component. \nJoin live to participate in our online learning community or watch after as your schedule allows. All registrants will receive a recording of the class with access to view the class for 30 days after the live session. \nThis program takes place online Wednesday\, February 25\, 2026. \n About the Instructor: \nÉlan Alford\, Plant Conservation Scientist at Mt. Cuba Center\, earned a B.S. in Ecology & Evolution at the University of Pittsburgh and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Ecology at Colorado State University. Élan initially worked in ecological consulting where she conducted rare plant\, habitat\, and wetland surveys. With survey knowledge she aided clients to achieve their projects in a regulatory-compliant manner. After seeing many remarkable sites during her private-sector career\, Élan transitioned from finding practical and responsible environmental solutions in development to a conservation-centered approach. Now Elan focuses on using survey and data to tell native plant stories. \nREGISTER NOW: \nGeneral Public \nIndividual+ & Dual+ Members \nSupporter\, Advocate & Conservator Members \n

SUMMARY:Legacy: Apartheid's Shadow: Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about the ways Apartheid’s enduring legacy continues to shape South Africa and the pursuit of justice today.\n\n\nJoin us at Public Trust for Legacy: Apartheid’s Shadow\, a film screening and conversation about the ways Apartheid’s enduring legacy continues to shape South Africa and the pursuit of justice today. Following the screening\, director Tara Erica Moore will engage in conversation with with Andrea Mitchell Center Director Jeffrey Green. \nAbout the film: \nThirty years after the fall of apartheid\, South Africa remains a divided nation and one of the most unequal countries in the world. Legacy is a landmark documentary film that reveals how the deep-seated inequalities created by decades of oppression continue to shape South African society. Offering a global call to confront the past in order to re-imagine a more equal future\, Legacy is a vital meditation on accountability and social justice that resonates far beyond one nation\, mirroring struggles playing out worldwide today. \nWith unprecedented access\, the film follows Wilhelm Verwoerd\, the grandson of HF Verwoerd\, the former Prime Minister of South Africa and so-called “Architect of Apartheid\,” as he grapples with his family’s role in one of history’s most brutal regimes. His deeply personal reckoning exposes apartheid’s endurance today\, both systemically and psychologically. \nLegacy also features intimate interviews with key figures in the history of Apartheid\, including Hilda Ndude\, a resistance leader and anti-apartheid activist\, Z Pallo Jordan\, a Government Minister in Mandela’s Cabinet\, and Mac Maharaj\, who was imprisoned alongside Nelson Mandela\, as well as sociologists\, political scientists\, land accountability lawyers\, spiritual leaders and others. Through their voices and stories of resilience and struggle\, we hear firsthand accounts of the lasting trauma and challenges of building a truly equitable and just society. Legacy concludes with a series of reflections on the progress made and unfinished work of creating a truly post-Apartheid South Africa. \nAbout the speakers: \nTara Erica Moore is the award-winning South African director\, editor\, and producer of Legacy: Apartheid’s Shadow. The film won the Best South African Documentary award and was a contender in the 2025 Oscar® race for Best Feature Documentary. Born under the complex backdrop of Apartheid and raised bouncing between South Africa and Connecticut\, Tara’s unique bi-racial\, bi-continental perspective informs her film-making. She has spent the past 15 years in Los Angeles gaining experience in the entertainment industry through various roles\, from acting in well-syndicated television shows\, to assisting prominent studio executives\, to working on high-budget production sets\, to over-seeing development. Tara holds a BA from Wesleyan University and an MBA from UCLA Anderson. \nJeffrey Green is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania and the Andrea Mitchell Endowed Director of the Andrea Mitchell Center for the Study of Democracy. His books include The Eyes of the People: Democracy in an Age of Spectatorship (2010) and The Shadow of Unfairness: A Plebeian Theory of Liberal Democracy (2016). He is political theorist who explores how democracy feels to those who live it—and what it would mean for those experiences to be taken more seriously in public life.

SUMMARY:Building a Clean\, Equitable Economy: Where Do We Go from Here?
DESCRIPTION:Join Heather Boushey to learn about how the United States can embrace the clean energy transition without leaving communities behind.\n\n\nPenn Climate\, the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy\, and the Penn Center for Science\, Sustainability\, and the Media\, welcome Heather Boushey\, Professor of Practice at the Kleinman Center and former Chief Economist to President Biden’s Investing in America Cabinet\, for a conversation during Energy Week. \nOne of our nation’s most pressing economic challenges is embracing decarbonization as a strategic opportunity for shared growth and security. There is a need to rapidly transition from a carbon-intensive economy\, to adapt to the real-time physical damages incurred from a changing climate\, to bolster American competitiveness through technological innovation\, and to reverse decades of rising economic inequalities. Too often\, policymakers seeking policies that deliver both economic and climate benefits find themselves constrained by frameworks that assume decarbonization is a simple tradeoff between higher costs and lower emissions. \n \nFor the United States to maintain its role as an economic powerhouse\, it cannot be economically “blind” to the financial hazards of climate change and the economic upsides of decarbonization. The fundamental gaps in technical knowledge\, tools\, and communities of economic practice leave economic policymakers with outdated frameworks and capacities that fail to account for the requisite scale and speed of the energy transition\, which\, in turn\, results in people and places being left behind. \n \nIn this Penn Energy Week seminar\, Dr. Heather Boushey\, Professor of Practice at the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy\, will debunk old dogma on the economics of climate change and map out the necessary principles to deliver on our future\, which sets the table for a forward-looking plan where decarbonization delivers shared growth for people and places and bolsters national security.

SUMMARY:Cadence in the Clouds
DESCRIPTION:Cadence in the Clouds is an industry night that celebrates the dreamers in Philadelphia; the artists\, the creatives\, the entrepreneurs\, and the supporters of the arts. It is meant to show Philly artists that they don’t need to move out of the city to have a thriving career. Philly is a city rich in history\, and they should be a part of it given the necessary resources and connections. We aim to create the industry night that puts all of those people in one room\, while using all local Philadelphia businesses and artists\, to make a night where people connect and collaborate through the language of music. While patrons get to enjoy a live concert featuring music from DJ Bear One\, A.Rob\, and Sahlii\, their ticket also comes with artist bios\, raffles for a studio session and a photography/music video shoot\, live art\, complimentary snacks and sweets\, and so much more. \nThis particular concert is all about celebrating artists who are courageous enough to use their music and their art to make a change and stand up to what is going on in the world. It’s meant to show that while some pay punish you for speaking up\, we will highlight you\, putting you on our stage to amplify your voice. Every artist and business who is taking part has used their platform as a release\, and as a means to protest everything happening in the world. By purchasing tickets or any of the art that will be at the event\, you are directly putting money into the pockets of Black and Brown artists.

SUMMARY:Fierce Desires: Variation\, Conflict\, and Pleasure in the History of America
DESCRIPTION:From puritans to polyamory\, Professor Rebecca Davis explores the story of America’s sexual past.\n\n\nIn the United States today\, we have government decrees that there are only two sexes\, debates about “trad wives” and polyamory\, and frequent references to the nation’s “puritan” past. But in her latest book—and in this talk—Professor Rebecca L. Davis argues that seventeenth-century Puritans are a weak precedent for how the history of sexuality has unfolded in the United States. Into the 1800s\, the United States was far more welcoming of gender nonconformity and same-sex/queer desires than we might presume. Instead\, a significant shift occurred in the late nineteenth century\, when anti-obscenity and anti-immigration legislation vastly expanded the federal government’s investment in shaping sexual morality. The history that unfolds is far less about prudish puritans than shifting sexual values. Our contemporary conflicts over sex and gender highlight the power of this surprising history. \nRebecca L. Davis is the Miller Family Early Career Professor of History and an associate professor of Women and Gender Studies at the University of Delaware. She is a historian of marriage\, religion\, sexuality\, and politics in the United States. In addition to Fierce Desires: A New History of Sex and Sexuality in America\, she is author of Public Confessions: The Religious Conversions that Changed American Politics and More Perfect Unions: The American Search for Marital Bliss\, and the co-editor of Heterosexual Histories. She is also a podcast host and producer and writes the newsletter Carnal Knowledge\, which explains the history behind today’s headlines about gender\, sexuality\, and American politics. \nPenn State Great Valley strives to host inclusive\, accessible events that enable all individuals in our community to engage fully. The campus includes accessible and gender neutral restroom\, dedicated parking spaces\, elevators\, lactation room\, step-free access\, and a complimentary wheelchair.
