SUMMARY:"Up Against It": Post-Pandemic Life and Community Response 1918-1923
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Bethany Johnson to hear about her recent research into the aftermath of the 1918 flu pandemic in Philaldelphia\n\n\nWhen thousands of Philadelphian families lost members in the October 1918 influenza wave\, Philadelphian organizations\, volunteers\, college students\, and even children pitched in to help survivors recuperate and rebuild their lives. Nevertheless\, influenza left medical\, economic\, and social scars in neighborhoods around the city. \nJoin Dr. Bethany Johnson to hear about her recent Ph.D. research into the aftermath of the 1918 flu pandemic\, research which drew heavily on Girard College student records\, as well as those in other local repositories\, including the Historical Society of Pennsylvania\, the College of Physicians\, and many others. \nIn this talk\, she will discuss the complex challenges facing the stricken families and the far-reaching efforts of institutions and organizations that changed their programs—and\, in some cases\, their politics—after seeing the suffering and the resilience of survivors firsthand

SUMMARY:Our House is on Fire Exhibit Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating the power of art to inspire environmental action and advocate for a greener\, healthier future!\n\n\nArtists are often inspired by nature and create art out of the outstanding natural beauty all around us. We are now at a critical juncture where we need to advocate for harnessing our imagination\, wealth\, and technology to make our communities and our country greener and healthier places for everyone to live. Recently the Supreme Court curtailed the powers of the EPA to protect the environment\, no longer requiring the reductions in emissions that are urgently needed to limit global warming. What are we to do? \nWe need clean air\, clean water\, clean energy\, open spaces and a livable climate for ourselves and future generations. Linda Dubin Garfield\, Pamela Tudor\, Elsa Wachs\, Chantal Westby\, and Fran Lightman Gibson interpret these catastrophic times and present works in their own visual language that strive to create an appreciation for natural beauty and a concern for its preservation. \nThis exhibit will be on display October 21 – December 18. \nPenn State Great Valley strives to host inclusive\, accessible events that enable all individuals in our community to engage fully. The campus includes accessible and gender neutral restroom\, dedicated parking spaces\, elevators\, lactation room\, step-free access\, and a complimentary wheelchair. If you require any accommodation not listed above\, or have questions about the physical access provided\, please contact Becky Stanko at rus1078@psu.edu or call 610-648-3236.

SUMMARY:An Evening of ART + FASHION + DESIGN
DESCRIPTION:Join 5 local woman-owned Philadelphia brands under one roof for an intimate evening of style\, creativity\, and connection.\n\n\nAn Evening of ART + FASHION + DESIGN \nOn October 22\, 2025\, five visionary women are coming together once again to celebrate creativity\, community\, and style in the heart of Philadelphia. This special gathering will take place at Paradigm Gallery\, the contemporary art space founded by Sara McCorriston\, and will feature a curated mix of art\, fashion\, jewelry\, and design. \nThe evening brings together: \n• Bela Shehu\, founder and designer of NINObrand \n• Parisa Abdollahi of Parisa Rugs & Décor \n• Rosa Agliata of My Italian Lifestyle \n• Angela Monaco of Angela Monaco Jewelry \n• Sara McCorriston\, co-founder of Paradigm Gallery & Paradigm Art Advisory \nThis is not the first time this collective of creatives has joined forces. Their previous collaboration sparked a memorable celebration of style and artistry that left a lasting impression on everyone who attended the sold-out event. Building on that success\, the group is excited to curate another evening where creativity collides and community thrives. \nThe Evening \nDoors open at 5:00 pm\, greeting guests with a welcome drink and inviting them into the gallery’s inspiring atmosphere. \nAt 5:30pm\, the participants will host an introductory panel discussion\, offering a glimpse into their creative processes\, inspirations\, and the shared vision behind this gathering. \nAt 6:00pm\, following the conversation\, guests will be invited to explore a curated shopping and art experience—a chance to connect with the makers\, discover new design perspectives\, and collect pieces that embody both craftsmanship and story. \n \nA Celebration of Community \nThis evening is designed as more than an exhibition. It’s a celebration of connection\, of the creative energy that runs through Philadelphia\, and of the unique experiences that emerge when art\, fashion\, jewelry\, and design are placed in dialogue with one another. \nGuests are encouraged to bring a friend (see our ‘bring a friend’ ticket option!) and step into an evening that promises discovery\, inspiration\, and lasting memories. \n \nSee you on October 22nd from 5-8pm at the Paradigm Arts Building located at 12 N. 3rd Street\, Philadelphia\, PA 19106. \nSPACE IS LIMITED. \n \nABOUT THE FOUNDERS \nAngela Monaco is a Philadelphia-based artist\, designer\, and entrepreneur who has been creating jewelry for over 20 years. Drawing from her background in fine art and a lifelong passion for crystals and energy work\, she crafts heirloom-quality talismans that merge elegance with intention. Every piece is handmade in Philly using responsibly sourced gemstones\, both new and antique\, and recycled metals\, reflecting her commitment to sustainability\, community\, and artistry. Known for her intuitive design process\, Angela infuses each creation with high vibrational energy\, transforming jewelry into tools for connection\, empowerment\, and story. (Learn more: Angela Monaco Jewelry) \nParisa Abdollahi is the owner of PARISA Rugs & Décor which debuted at the Marketplace Design Center in January 2000 before locating to Old City in 2016. \nBorn in United States\, Parisa spent her childhood years in Tehran and St. Gallen. Her international upbringing shaped a design perspective that seamlessly blends tradition\, innovation\, and cultural richness. One of her earliest memories is traveling with her father through the Zagros mountains of Iran to visit the Qashqai tribe and rug weavers—an encounter that sparked a lifelong passion for handcraft and multi-generational artistry. \nParisa obtained her Master’s Degree in Interior Architecture + Design from Drexel University\, which laid the foundation for her design career. Parisa’s signature style is eclectically modern\, uniting classic elements and unexpected clean lines\, all while emphasizing comfort\, functionality\, and sophistication. The building boasts multiple floors of exhibition space\, integrated in-house design and printmaking\, a dedicated events floor\, and art advisory offices. With this\, Chen and McCorriston expanded their vision for the greater Philadelphia arts community. The gallery is at the heart of this vision\, anchoring Paradigm’s overall mission of increasing access to the commercial art world\, supporting artists and advancing their careers\, and collaborating with like-minded partners to build a more equitable\, sustainable arts economy for all.
