SUMMARY:Philly Pigeon Tour - Italian Market
DESCRIPTION:Join us for pigeon-focused urban birding tours in the Italian Market area of South Philly.\n\n\nOn our Italian Market Pigeon Tour\, meet the pigeons of the historic market on 9th St and Washington Ave. Your expert pigeon guide will bring you through the historic market and visit nearby established pigeon flocks. You’ll also get to see the market pigeons nesting in old buildings and braving traffic with confidence. \n \nWhat is a pigeon tour?\nOur pigeon tours are 90-minute walking tours\, and are great for all ages. \nTourists will get to experience Philly from a unique perspective. \nLocals will get to see their neighborhood in a new way. \nOn your Philly Pigeon Tour\, your pigeon expert guide will tell you all about the dramatic relationship between pigeons and humans\, including how pigeons have been maligned and redeemed throughout history. \nWe’ll visit a few established pigeon flocks in the neighborhood\, and our guide will teach the basics of birdwatching\, including how to use binoculars. \nYou’ll come away understanding pigeon behavior — and you might even see the elusive baby pigeon! \n \nWhat you’ll learn\n\nbirdwatching technique\, including how to use binoculars like a pro\nthe story of the pigeon-human relationship\, including how pigeons have been valued\, maligned and redeemed throughout history\nhow to interpret pigeon behaviors like cooing and wing clapping\npigeon biology and genetics\, including different varieties\, colors\, and markings\nhow we’re connected to the wider ecosystem\nwhy you never see baby pigeons (you actually do\, you just don’t realize it yet!)\n\n \nAccessibility\nMost tours involve about a mile of movement throughout the neighborhood. We choose routes that are easy to travel\, but construction work may require some detouring. Please email us if you or someone in your party have accessibility needs you’d like to touch base about. We do our very best to accomodate all requests! \n \nParking\nOur tours held in locations near paid parking or near 2-hour street parking. When you register\, location-specific parking advice will be sent to you. \n \nWhat to bring\nPigeon tours are rain-or-shine\, so please bring weather-appropriate clothes\, sun protection\, and a raincoat or umbrella. Bring some water to stay hydrated\, and you may consider bringing cash or Venmo to tip your tour guide. \nIf you have your own binoculars\, we recommend bringing them. If you don’t have binoculars\, we will have a few loaner pairs to share among the group. \n\nNot seeing a tour on the date you want?\nIf you’re looking for a tour on a specific day\, but there’s no tour scheduled\, please email us at hello@phillypigeontours.com to request that we add a tour. If we think we can fill a tour on your requested date\, we’ll add it to the public tour schedule — and we’ll notify you so you can be the first to snag tickets.

SUMMARY:Philadelphia: Workshop of the World
DESCRIPTION:Join us on First Friday as we unveil the newest exhibition in our A Closer Read series.\n\n\nPhiladelphia was once known as the “workshop of the world” due to the abundance of factories\, products\, and infrastructure located within the city. From the 1800s through the 1920s\, ships\, yarn\, paints\, and more were manufactured on the banks of the Schuylkill and Delaware. \nThis display features works originally published by some of the pioneering companies that made Philadelphia an industrial powerhouse. Guests can enjoy handling collection activities in our museum and a talk by curator Caroline Meehan\, followed by a light reception. \nThe Philadelphia Chapter of the Society of Industrial Archaeology will also be there to share information about their organization and events for those who are interested in Philadelphia’s industrial past. Their mission is the study\, interpretation\, and preservation of the surviving factories\, machinery\, bridges\, canals\, industrial communities and artifacts that are historically significant. They will also be selling their books Workshop of the World: A Selective Guide to the Industrial Archeology of Philadelphia and Workshop of the World Revisited. \n\n\nFeatured image: Lithograph of an advertisement depicting the Tatham & Brothers factory complex located at 608 Delaware Avenue in Philadelphia\, August 1847\nLibrary of Congress
