DESCRIPTION:Get Involved on Nice Roots Farm!\nThanks so much for your help in the fight against food insecurity in Philadelphia!  \nNice Roots Farm and Orchard hosts Community Farming days\, a series of monthly work days taking place monthly from March – to December 2023. \nVolunteering At Nice Roots Farm (no experience necessary! all tasks will be taught & demonstrated) \nParticipants will learn about growing food in an urban environment\, make an impact with hands-on help\, and get to know others looking to do the same. No green thumb necessary! \nOur Farming Days are being hosted in partnership with Philadelphia Orchard Project. The food grown on Nice Roots Farm and Orchard is donated to local organizations fighting hunger. \nFarm and orchard activities will include:   \n\nPreparing beds for planting\nHarvesting & processing produce\nMaintatining plants (weeding\, watering\, fertilizing) and flowers\nMulching trees & shrubs\nCleaning up the grounds (raking\, picking up trash)\nStarting seeds in the ground & planting vegetable seedlings\nPruning\n\nFarming Tips and Preparation: \n\nAll ages are welcome; anyone under 16 should be accompanied by an adult\nCheck the weather a day before your shift! Remember that this experience is fully outside\, so wear the appropriate amount of layers to be comfortable!\nWe recommend wearing closed-toed shoes/boots as well as bringing a water bottle and bring garden gloves\, if you have them.\nWear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty\nCheck the weather before arriving to make sure you are wearing an appropriate amount of layers.\nSafety first! We highly encourage sun protection – much of the work area has full sun exposure most of the day! Recommended but not required: a hat\, lightweight long sleeves and pants.\nIf you are prone to mosquito bites or allergic to insect stings\, please take proper precautions before arriving\n\nMore about Nice Roots Farm \nNice Roots Farm is an urban agriculture project located in the West Allegheny neighborhood of Philadelphia\, started in 2010. Through partnerships with the Philadelphia Orchard Project\, the Philadelphia Horticultural Society\, and Penn State Extension\, the farm now features 20+ fruiting trees\, two high tunnels for extended season growing and harvesting\, and 20+ raised beds. \nThe quarter-acre farm grows over 4\,000 lbs. annually of fully organic vegetables and herbs\, and donates the yield to the community\, to Share-affiliated pantries and mutual aid networks. This class is taught by our finance administrator\, Candy Hasan\, who has worked in our finance department for 9 years!  \nT﻿his is an in person workshop which will be hosted on 8/19 from 1-2pm at our Germantown Outreach Office\, located at 326B W Chelten Ave\, Philadelphia PA  19144 \nAbout the instructor of the workshop: Candy has always had an organized way of handling money. From early on in her Weavers Way career\, her colleagues noticed her drawer was never short and her money handling systems always worked. She quickly became an interim member of the finance department. That was 9 years ago. Since then\, she has gotten promoted to Finance  Administrator and continues to be a reliable pillar of our finance department. Candy is constantly researching and educating herself on new money management techniques and\, thankfully\, she is eager to share her findings with us in this upcoming workshop.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a morning of field work which could include harvesting\, weeding\, planting\, mulching\, seeding\, and more!\n\n\nT﻿HIS WORK SHIFT IS FOR NON-MEMBERS ONLY! IF YOU ARE A MEMBER\, PLEASE REGISTER FOR YOUR SHIFT THROUGH THE MEMBER PORTAL.  \nWhat to expect: You will be working with Alessandro (he/him)\, who goes by Ali\, and Nicole \n(she/they)\, the farmers at Awbury\, as well as potentially other Weavers Way farmers\, co-op \nmembers completing working member shifts\, and other volunteers. Field work generally involves kneeling\, squatting\, or bending over for extended periods of time and being exposed to the \nelements and the outdoors\, i.e. sun\, rain\, bugs\, mud\, etc. We encourage taking breaks\, drinking \nlots of water\, and doing only what feels right for your body! There is drinking water available and \na porta potty a short walk from the fields. We are out there rain or shine\, but not in unsafe \nconditions – you’ll receive an email if we cancel the volunteer day due to anticipated inclement \nweather. \nHow to get there: On google maps\, search “The Farm at Awbury Arboretum.” The address is \n6336 Ardleigh Street. Park on Ardleigh St. and walk in through the gate. Stay to the right and \nwalk past the community garden\, the pavilion\, the greenhouse\, and the Philly Goat Project. \nMeet us at the wash station/picnic table or peek into the field if you don’t see us. \nWhat to bring: Water\, sun protection\, clothes and closed toed-shoes for working outside and \ngetting dirty\, garden/work gloves if you have them \nAccessibility: There is a paved path from the entrance gate on Ardleigh St. to the greenhouse\, \nthen a gravel path with a mellow slope down to the fields. The porta potty is wheelchair \naccessible. We have a folding table and a shade tent that can be set up near the greenhouse for \nwheelchair accessible work – please let us know if you need accessible work options so that we \ncan have projects set up.
