SUMMARY:Over\, Under\, Around and Through the Wissahickon Watershed with Lisa Donahue and Jon McCabe
DESCRIPTION:Mt Airy Ave Trailhead \nAn exciting hike through some of the most interesting and historically significant areas of the park. We will visit the wildlife at the frog pond\, discuss industrial history at Glen Fern\, visit the unique habitat for snakes and other wildlife\, and cross the stunning Fingerspan bridge. Along the way\, hikers will learn about the park’s crucial role as a watershed\, and how the size\, shape\, and vegetation of the surrounding land directly impacts the amount of water flowing into the creek. We will discuss challenges such as land erosion damage\, pollutants\, and the complicated relationship with the Chestnut Hill sewer intercept. Most importantly\, hikers will learn what they can do to help preserve the watershed. A note that this trail is challenging. There are rocks (esp. around climbers rock)\, hills\, and gaps to navigate around. Although dogs are welcome\, they should be prepared for these challenges\, and hikers should be informed that most dogs are afraid of the Fingerspan. Distance:~2 miles. Level: Difficult (many inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces). Recommended for ages 12+ \nRegistration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations. We ask all event attendees to bring a mask and mask up if a distance of six feet cannot be maintained during the activity. He is internationally known within the field of reductive geometric abstraction. \nWitmer’s work manifests decades of inquiry into the materiality of the painted object through refined processes within the framework of reductive abstract painting. His elemental compositional structures are activated by sensuous color and various improvised gestural and incidental actions. \nThe subject is presence–establishing a visual place that offers someone an open invitation for a personal experience of seeing and feeling. \nIn his recent work\, Witmer applies the paint in watercolor-thin layers. From start to finish on a painting\, his interactions with the surface are completely additive. Sometimes a wash is cascaded down the entire face of the painting. Other times Witmer introduces structure with flat housepainters’ brushes. And still other times he creates marks in gestural strokes or in ways where resulting marks will be unexpected or unanticipated\, such as purposely touching wet paintings against one another. The highly fluid nature of this painting process sets up challenging dynamics of control and release. And Witmer coaxes a wide range of emotional results from his basic approaches. \nWitmer has said: “In the 21st century\, I see my work as offering a clear alternative in a visual culture dominated by speed\, layering\, and complexity. I do not believe my work requires any prequisite knowledge beyond what you bring to it. My hope is that it can activate the sense that you simply feel yourself seeing. I like to think of that kind of moment as clear\, pure\, innocent\, and solitary. And if you can get to it\, then you have\, in a way\, started an experiential engine for yourself\, and your thoughts can begin to move in uniquely personal directions.” \nHis work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions around the world. Solo museum exhibitions include The Midwest Museum of American Art\, Elkhart IN (2023) and The Cornell Fine Arts Museum of Rollins College in Winter Park\, FL (2011). Other venues include: MoMA PS1\, Minus Space\, The Curator Gallery\, and The Painting Center (all NYC)\, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts\, Tiger Strikes Asteroid (Philadelphia)\, Hemphill Fine Arts (Washington\, DC)\, ICON Contemporary Art (Brunswick\, ME)\, The Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art\, Gray Contemporary (Houston)\, Gebert Contemporary (Santa Fe)\, The University of Maryland\, The University of Dayton\, Galerie Biesenbach (Germany)\, ParisCONCRET (France)\, Sydney Non-Objective (Australia)\, and Sol del Rio Arte Contemporanea (Guatemala City). His work is held in the collections of The Woodmere Art Museum\, The Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska\, The Columbus Museum\, Columbus\, Georgia and The Fellowship of The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts\, as well as numerous corporate and private collections internationally. \nHis work has been documented in publications by The Woodmere Museum of Art\, The Free Library of Philadelphia\, The Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State University\, and The University of Manitoba press\, and his exhibitions have been reviewed in The Washington Post\, Two Coats of Paint\, and Art New England\, and other arts periodicals and websites. \nWitmer has also curated numerous exhibitions in the United States mostly centered on themes and issues within the discipline of abstract painting. \nWitmer holds a B.A. from Goshen College and an M.F.A. from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a moonlit hike and telescope observation! \n\n\n\nTIME\n8:30pm – 10:30pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION\nLemon Hill\n3298 Sedgley Drive\nPhiladelphia\, PA 19130 \n\n\n\nOur moonwalk and stargazing series continues as we celebrate the appearance of August’s “Sturgeon Moon”. According to the Farmers Almanac\, August’s full moon is given this name because\, you guessed it…it marked the return of sturgeon! This prehistoric-looking fish was most readily caught on the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain during this part of the summer. \nFirst\, we’ll use the moonlight to guide us on a short hike on the Lemon Hill Rim Trail\, appreciating nature lit by the glowing moon. \nNext we’ll turn our attention to the moon itself by ending the hike with a guided moon and planet observation. Novice and experienced astronomers alike will be given insights and tips by experienced instructor Buddy Muhler. Each attendee will have the chance to travel close up to the moon’s surface by looking through Buddy’s high-powered telescope! Buddy will discuss the lunar cycles\, point out interesting visible surface features such as dark gray mares (seas) and white reflective highlands. We’ll gaze at planets and discuss other astronomical wonders of the night sky. \nIf you’re a lunar lunatic\, this is an evening not to miss! \nEstimated distance: 2 miles\nLevel: easy to moderate\nTerrain: combination of flat open parkland and hilly trails \nIMPORTANT: This is a night hike and after a short intro talk\, we will leave promptly. Please arrive at the departure location at scheduled time.  We cannot guarantee latecomers will be able join after the group has departed. \nTICKET PRICES: Pay what you can – $10\, $15\, or $20\n[ Not sure what to pay? Please refer to this Sliding Scale Pricing FAQ for additional info. ] \n\nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nThis hike is roughly two miles in length over a combination of open parkland and hilly terrain (easy-moderate exertion).\nAppropriate for adults and families with children ages 6 & up. Minors must be registered and accompanied by an adult.\nAttendees are encouraged to bring their own telescopes or high powered binoculars.\nPlease dress according to weather conditions and wear sturdy walking / hiking footwear.\nPlease bring your own water and snacks (drinking water is not available in the park).\nFriendly dogs on leash are welcome.\nWe will use moonlight whenever possible\, but for portions of the trail\, we recommend bringing flashlight\, headlamp\, or fully charged smartphone.\nThere are bathrooms available at the beginning and end of the hike (porta-potties).\n\n\nPARKING: There is plenty of free parking available in the park. As always\, NEVER leave valuables in your car!

SUMMARY:Public Meeting with Hilco Executives on Refinery Redevelopment
DESCRIPTION:Join Philly Thrive for the FIRST in-person public meeting on the historic refinery redevelopment where Hilco executives will be present to listen\, answer questions\, and work to rebuild transparency & accountability.\nWe are excited to focus on key issues around the redevelopment in a public forum with real back-and-forth dialogue – including the site cleanup\, flood protection plans\, community reinvestment through a CBA\, and jobs for residents impacted by the site’s history.\nIt’s been a priority of Philly Thrive’s since Hilco took over in 2020 to have regular in-person public meetings\, to ensure genuine repair of the 150+ years of harm the land’s use has caused. After multiple attempts\, Philly Thrive and Hilco Redevelopment Partners have managed to come together to hold this August 2023 meeting\, with the hopes that it will be the first in a series of ongoing in-person meetings where the developer and the community are in face-to-face conversation.\nCome one\, come all: join us on August 2nd share your feelings with Hilco\, your visions for the future of the refinery site and your neighborhood\, and your needs and expectations for public involvement with this project.\nRAIN/HEAT LOCATION: Audenried High School
