SUMMARY:PRISM Quartet with Miguel Zenón – World Premiere of El Eco del Tambor (pay-what-you-wish)
DESCRIPTION:PRISM Quartet joins forces with the Grammy Award-winning composer/saxophonist\, MacArthur Fellow\, and long-time collaborator Miguel Zenón for the world premiere of Zenón’s newest work\, El Eco del Tambor (The Echo of the Drum). \nZenón writes\, “El Eco del Tambor is an extended\, multi-movement saxophone quintet that draws on rhythmic traditions from around the globe\, focusing specifically on drumming from West Africa and its extension into Afro-Caribbean music. The title is an allusion to both the percussive elements within the piece and to the idea of music as an ancient language that is in constant evolution.” \nThe program also includes Zenón’s Clemente (after Roberto Clemente)\, and two additional sax quintets by Zenón that he arranged just for PRISM: The Missing Piece (from Heritage/Evolution\, Vol. 1) and Camarón. The original versions of both pieces are on Zenon’s highly acclaimed 2008 album\, Awake. \nAlso featured is Forbidden Drive (from Heritage/Evolution\, Vol. 2) by PRISM’s resident composer Matthew Levy\, Levy’s arrangement of the Sondheim classic Send in the Clowns (upon hearing it\, Sondheim himself declared\, “I love it”) and selections from Melissa Aldana’s Reflections. Clowns and Reflections both appear on PRISM’s 2024 album\, Heritage/Evolution\, Vol. 3.

SUMMARY:Community Resilience Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Community Resilience Group focuses on learning about resilience issues in food systems\, water systems\, energy systems and more. We are reviewing ways in which we could survey our community and create a resilience baseline to gain some indication of where we can improve. \nOur group initially focused our meetings on discussing the book The Community Resilience Reader (available for free at: resilience.org). We will be shifting to exploring The Community Resilience Toolkit in order to do a community resilience assessment of the Greater Media area. You can learn more about that here. \nWe’re also learning about the long term impact of climate change on different regions of the country. Using the American Resiliency channel on Youtube which gives forecasts and projected outlooks for every state in our country\, we compared the PA and NJ assessments. The projections for NJ are much grimmer than for PA. Something our group recognized is that the videos focus narrowly on Climate\, We’re committed to exploring what Community Resilience requires within the broader polycrisis and ecological predicament we face. \nIn the future\, the Community Resilience group will also be organizing community documentary film nights around Greater Media – coming soon! \nOur regular meeting date is the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm. We meet at a group member’s house and you can email Will Powers for the address if you’d like to attend.

SUMMARY:Outdoors Online – Insects in Art Through History
DESCRIPTION:From the dawn of time to the present\, bees and insects have been depicted in carvings\, jewelry\, coins\, songs\, tools\, sculptures\, and paintings. Consider the great cultural heritage of insect art found throughout the world\, whether super-charged with the science of new knowledge\, symbolic and fantastical features\, and\, at times\, otherworldly meaning. Bees and bugs have been part of nature-based “cabinets of curiosity\,” stand-ins for saints\, and admired for their dance of life.  \nJoin arts educator Lynn Berkowitz for a virtual discussion of the fascinating depictions of insects through art. With artists who range from Maria Sibylla Merian\, Jan van Kessel the Elder\, right through the newest public art of Matthew Willey\, artist and founder of The Good of the Hive\, our artful conversation includes historic to contemporary images\, a diversity of artists\, and short enlightening videos.  \nThis is a virtual event. The Zoom link will be shared in the confirmation email.

SUMMARY:The State of Democracy in 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join Perry World House as we discuss how we should be thinking about democracy\, and democracy promotion\, in 2025.\n\n\nIn 2024\, two billion people in over 70 countries were eligible to exercise their basic democratic right to vote for their leaders in a national election.       \nThe results were all over the map.    \nThere is no simple explanation for the disparate outcomes. In some cases – India\, the United States\, and Botswana\, for instance – incumbent parties either lost or fared worse than expected.  But in other places incumbent parties fared well.  In Moldova and Romania foreign election interference dramatically altered the outcome of elections; in other places – like Taiwan – foreign influence efforts were less successful.  In Venezuela a dictator stole the election to retain the presidency; in Senegal citizens’ demands ensured a fair vote and transfer of power.  Right wing populist parties did well in some votes\, but in other cases democratic forces successfully united to thwart the far right’s bid for power.   \nLooking back at these consequential votes\, what can we learn about state of democracy today?  What lessons can we draw from the elections of 2024?  How should we be thinking about democracy – and democracy promotion – in 2025?   \n\n\nSPEAKERS\n \nTamara Cofman Wittes became the fourth president of NDI in 2024. Before joining the Institute\, she served as Director of Foreign Assistance in the U.S Department of State. Previously\, she led the Russia sanctions effort for the State Department’s sanctions coordination office. Dr. Wittes also served in the State Department from 2009 – 2012 as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs\, coordinating U.S. policy on democracy and human rights in the Middle East during the Arab uprisings. Dr. Wittes spent nearly twenty years as a foreign policy scholar at the Brookings Institution\, including as director of its Center for Middle East Policy. Her analysis focused on U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East\, political and economic change in the region\, and the Arab-Israel conflict. She is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University\, where she has taught courses in international relations\, Middle East policy\, and security studies. \nDr. Wittes was one of the first recipients of the Rabin-Peres Peace Award\, established by President Bill Clinton in 1997. Dr. Wittes has published three books\, most recently Foreign Policy Careers for PhDs: A Practical Guide to a World of Possibilities (Georgetown University Press\, 2023). She holds a bachelor’s in Judaic and Near Eastern studies from Oberlin College\, and master’s and doctoral degrees in Government from Georgetown University. She is a founder of the Leadership Council for Women in National Security\, and served on the board of the National Democratic Institute from 2014 – 2022. She is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and Women in International Security. A native of Michigan\, Dr. Wittes lives in Washington\, D.C.\, where she tends a robust pollinator garden. \n \nSarah Bush is an associate professor of political science at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research examines how international actors try to aid democracy\, promote women’s representation\, and influence elections globally. A more recent interest is the politics of climate change. She is the author of two books: The Taming of Democracy Assistance: Why Democracy Promotion Does Not Confront Dictators (Cambridge University Press\, 2015) and Monitors and Meddlers: How Foreign Actors Influence Local Trust in Elections (Cambridge University Press\, 2022). Dr. Bush’s work has also appeared in journals such as the American Political Science Review and International Organization and been covered in outlets including the Economist and Washington Post. She received her Ph.D. from Princeton University.

Join us on Sundays at 11:00 AM for some time dedicated to self-care and relaxation. This event will take place at Black Lotus HHC at 206 Rittenhousetown Lane\, where you can unwind and focus on yourself. \nTake part in yoga sessions\, meditation exercises\, and mindfulness activities to rejuvenate your mind and body. See you there! \n\n\n\n\nMore about Black Lotus HHC \n \nBlack Lotus Holistic Healing Collective is known for is a space designed for BIPOC healers/practitioners to be centered in the healing in order for them to heal those in the BIPOC community. Vibrational healing is the ancient art of healing with sound; it traces back to ancient Egypt & Tibet. Sound vibrations can heal the physical body at a cellular level by adjusting blockages and imbalances. These imbalances can cause the body to have a slower frequency vibration which may lead to dis-ease or illnesses. Natural healing sound frequencies can be transferred or introduced externally or directly into the body to create a more harmonious state. \nAt Black Lotus\, we combine the use of crystal chakra singing bowls\, gongs\, tuning forks\, and more to give a relaxing & transformative experience. We can balance chakras\, repair auras\, uplift the mood or help with grounding. Vibrational healing is a great tool for meditation\, alleviating stress\, and relaxing stiff or sore muscles. \nFor more visit: www.diasporaeducationalservices.org/black-lotus \nhttps://linktr.ee/blacklotushhc \n\n\n\nDIRECTIONS: \n \nBlack Lotus is not on Lincoln Drive despite the address…it is actually on Rittenhousetown Lane. SUMMARY:In Conversation: Carl Cheng & Alex Klein
DESCRIPTION:This conversation will reflect on Cheng’s artistic practice spanning photography\, installation\, and technology.\n\n\nJoin us for a conversation with exhibiting artist Carl Cheng and Alex Klein\, Head Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs at The Contemporary Austin\, as they reflect on Cheng’s artistic practice spanning photography\, installation\, and technology. This conversation will provide an insightful deep-dive into the multi-year process of organizing the exhibition and a dynamic look into Cheng’s fascination with topics such as the relationship between fine art and other disciplines like science\, ecology\, nature\, and the role of museums during an environmental crisis. A Q&A with the audience will follow the conversation. \nCarl Cheng: Nature Never Loses is curated by Alex Klein\, Head Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs\, The Contemporary Austin\, with assistance from Rachel Eboh\, Curatorial Assistant\, The Contemporary Austin. The exhibition is organized for ICA by Denise Ryner\, Andrea B. Laporte Curator. \n \nRegistration\nVirtual viewing for this program will be available soon. \nLive captioning and ASL interpretation will be provided for this program. \nICA is committed to creating a welcoming environment for all visitors. For more notes on accessibility including accessible parking nearby visit our Accessibility landing page. If you require any accessibility accommodations or have any questions about the program\, please contact Brittany Clottey (bclottey@ica.upenn.edu). \n \nAbout the exhibiton\nCarl Cheng: Nature Never Loses is the first in-depth survey of Carl Cheng’s prescient\, genre-defying work from the 1960s to the present that will transform both floors of the ICA. Cheng began his career in the experimental context of the Southern California art scene and the post-war aerospace industry\, resulting in artworks that operate at the intersection of identity\, technology\, and ecology. Over the last six decades he has worked in a variety of media to reflect on environmental change\, the relevance of art institutions to their publics\, and the role of technology in society. Because the majority of Cheng’s oeuvre is still in his possession\, the exhibition will be an exciting and rare opportunity to animate the arc of his career through a presentation of artworks that are multidisciplinary\, ephemeral\, material\, process-based\, and interactive. The exhibition will also be presented at The Contemporary Austin – Jones Center (September – December 2024)\, Bonnefanten (May – September 2025)\, and Museum Tinguely (December 2025 – May 2026). \n \nSupport\nProgramming at ICA is made possible in part by the Emily and Jerry Spiegel Fund to Support Contemporary Culture and Visual Arts and the Lise Spiegel Wilks and Jeffrey Wilks Family Foundation. Public and Student Engagement at ICA is supported by the Bernstein Public Engagement Fund\, Suzanne Weiss Doft & Jacob W. Doft\, Stacey & Robert Goergen Jr.\, Hilarie L. & Mitchell Morgan\, the Nash Family Foundation\, Joline & David Stemerman\, and by Dana McDonald Strong & Mark W. Strong. \nCarl Cheng: Nature Never Loses is organized by The Contemporary Austin\, Texas\, in partnership with the Institute of Contemporary Art\, University of Pennsylvania\, Philadelphia; Bonnefanten\, Maastricht; Museum Tinguely\, Basel; and the Institute of Contemporary Art\, Los Angeles. \nMajor support for Carl Cheng: Nature Never Loses has been provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage\, also by the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and Teiger Foundation\, with sustainability efforts guided by Rute Collaborative as part of Teiger Foundation’s Climate Action Pilot. Additional support has been provided by Nancy & Leonard Amoroso\, Barbara & Theodore Aronson\, Dorothy & Martin Bandier\, Carol & John Finley\, Cheri & Steven Friedman\, Marjorie & Michael Levine\, Bryan & Meredith Verona\, and Caroline & Daniel Werther. \nSpecial thanks to Philip Martin Gallery\, Los Angeles; Art + Technology Lab\, LACMA\, Los Angeles; REDCAT\, Los Angeles; curatorial fellows Emily Leifer and Pelle Tracey; and studio assistants Maya Buffett-Davis and Markele Cullins.
