SUMMARY:In Conversation: Carl Cheng & Alex Klein
DESCRIPTION:This conversation will reflect on Cheng’s artistic practice spanning photography\, installation\, and technology.\n\n\nJoin us for a conversation with exhibiting artist Carl Cheng and Alex Klein\, Head Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs at The Contemporary Austin\, as they reflect on Cheng’s artistic practice spanning photography\, installation\, and technology. This conversation will provide an insightful deep-dive into the multi-year process of organizing the exhibition and a dynamic look into Cheng’s fascination with topics such as the relationship between fine art and other disciplines like science\, ecology\, nature\, and the role of museums during an environmental crisis. A Q&A with the audience will follow the conversation. \nCarl Cheng: Nature Never Loses is curated by Alex Klein\, Head Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs\, The Contemporary Austin\, with assistance from Rachel Eboh\, Curatorial Assistant\, The Contemporary Austin. The exhibition is organized for ICA by Denise Ryner\, Andrea B. Laporte Curator. \n \nRegistration\nVirtual viewing for this program will be available soon. \nLive captioning and ASL interpretation will be provided for this program. \nICA is committed to creating a welcoming environment for all visitors. For more notes on accessibility including accessible parking nearby visit our Accessibility landing page. If you require any accessibility accommodations or have any questions about the program\, please contact Brittany Clottey (bclottey@ica.upenn.edu). \n \nAbout the exhibiton\nCarl Cheng: Nature Never Loses is the first in-depth survey of Carl Cheng’s prescient\, genre-defying work from the 1960s to the present that will transform both floors of the ICA. Cheng began his career in the experimental context of the Southern California art scene and the post-war aerospace industry\, resulting in artworks that operate at the intersection of identity\, technology\, and ecology. Over the last six decades he has worked in a variety of media to reflect on environmental change\, the relevance of art institutions to their publics\, and the role of technology in society. Because the majority of Cheng’s oeuvre is still in his possession\, the exhibition will be an exciting and rare opportunity to animate the arc of his career through a presentation of artworks that are multidisciplinary\, ephemeral\, material\, process-based\, and interactive. The exhibition will also be presented at The Contemporary Austin – Jones Center (September – December 2024)\, Bonnefanten (May – September 2025)\, and Museum Tinguely (December 2025 – May 2026). \n \nSupport\nProgramming at ICA is made possible in part by the Emily and Jerry Spiegel Fund to Support Contemporary Culture and Visual Arts and the Lise Spiegel Wilks and Jeffrey Wilks Family Foundation. Public and Student Engagement at ICA is supported by the Bernstein Public Engagement Fund\, Suzanne Weiss Doft & Jacob W. Doft\, Stacey & Robert Goergen Jr.\, Hilarie L. & Mitchell Morgan\, the Nash Family Foundation\, Joline & David Stemerman\, and by Dana McDonald Strong & Mark W. Strong. \nCarl Cheng: Nature Never Loses is organized by The Contemporary Austin\, Texas\, in partnership with the Institute of Contemporary Art\, University of Pennsylvania\, Philadelphia; Bonnefanten\, Maastricht; Museum Tinguely\, Basel; and the Institute of Contemporary Art\, Los Angeles. \nMajor support for Carl Cheng: Nature Never Loses has been provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage\, also by the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and Teiger Foundation\, with sustainability efforts guided by Rute Collaborative as part of Teiger Foundation’s Climate Action Pilot. Additional support has been provided by Nancy & Leonard Amoroso\, Barbara & Theodore Aronson\, Dorothy & Martin Bandier\, Carol & John Finley\, Cheri & Steven Friedman\, Marjorie & Michael Levine\, Bryan & Meredith Verona\, and Caroline & Daniel Werther. \nSpecial thanks to Philip Martin Gallery\, Los Angeles; Art + Technology Lab\, LACMA\, Los Angeles; REDCAT\, Los Angeles; curatorial fellows Emily Leifer and Pelle Tracey; and studio assistants Maya Buffett-Davis and Markele Cullins.

SUMMARY:Winter Gull Watching with Bird Philly
DESCRIPTION:Glen Foerd is one of the best places in the city to study gulls during the winter. While there is no guarantee\, we are hoping to see a rare gull such as Iceland or Glaucous Gull. There should also be a good amount of waterfowl out on the river and we can discuss how to distinguish Double-crested Cormorants from the Great Cormorants that visit the area in winter. \nWe plan this as a stationary event overlooking the river\, but if folks want\, we can also explore the parkland surrounding the mansion.\nPlease dress according to the expected weather. \nNo registration is needed. We will meet at 11 am at the flagpole along the river. Folks can join at any point during the event. \nNo binoculars? No worries! Birding backpacks with binoculars and field guides are on loan at the following local Philly libraries: Andorra\, Cobbs Creek\, Cecil B. Morre\, Chestnut Hill\, Eastwick\, Falls of Schuylkill\, Fishtown\, Fox Chase\, Greater Olney\, Independence Library\, Logan\, Lovett Memorial\, Northeast Regional\, Oak Lane\, Parkway Central\, Richmond\, South Philly\, Torresdale\, West Philadelphia Regional\, and Widener. \nFor questions\, please reach out to birdphillywalks@gmail.com.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the opening of Carl Cheng: Nature Never Loses \, a retrospective show of the experimental and genre-defying artist.\n\n\nJoin us for an evening celebrating the opening of Carl Cheng: Nature Never Loses\, a retrospective exhibition of the experimental and genre-defying artist\, Carl Cheng\, whose six-decade career operates at the intersection of identity\, technology\, and ecology. \nEnjoy small bites from Dim Sum House and vibe to the electrifying sounds of techno\, deep house\, and disco music courtesy of DJ Yolo Ono. Welcome Remarks by Hallie Ringle (Interim Director and Daniel and Brett Sundheim Chief Curator) will take place at 7:15PM. \nNote: ICA will be closed to the public until Friday\, January 17th at 7PM. Regular hours will resume on Saturday\, January 18th. \n\nAccessibility\nASL interpretation will be provided for this program. \n \nAbout the exhibitions\nCarl Cheng: Nature Never Loses is the first in-depth survey of Carl Cheng’s prescient\, genre-defying work from the 1960s to the present that will transform both floors of the ICA. Carl Cheng: Nature Never Loses is curated by Alex Klein\, Head Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs\, The Contemporary Austin\, with assistance from Rachel Eboh\, Curatorial Assistant\, The Contemporary Austin. The exhibition is organized for ICA by Denise Ryner\, Andrea B. Laporte Curator. \nEntryways: Nontsikelelo Mutiti is the inaugural project for a new series that commissions artists to activate the façade of ICA’s building in partnership with Maharam. For this iteration\, Mutiti combines African hair braiding patterns with symbols often found in ironwork. She reimagines the decorative architectural features first created by enslaved blacksmiths from West Africa which is now found across the United States\, including in Philadelphia. This exhibition is organized by Hallie Ringle\, Daniel and Brett Sundheim Chief Curator.

SUMMARY:Inner Transformation Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of the Inner Transformation group is to provide us real-world benefits of becoming more emotionally resilient during tough times.  This work also helps us to make decisions in the absence of substantial data or authority to guide us.  We cannot expect the government\, corporations\, society\, or religion to always be there when we need them.  Aligning with Transition Town Greater Media’s practice and philosophy of self-sufficiency\, we are learning to make the best decisions possible in crisis when too little or too much information is coming at us.  To do so\, we make use of many different paths\, including communing with Nature\, Shamanism\, Quakerism\, Buddhism\, Native American wisdom\, quantum physics\, meditation\, strengthening intuition\, and receiving direct messages from the Spirit.  All paths lead to the same place and all are valuable. \nPlease join us for lively discussions and information sessions on the 3rd Thursday of each month. Come when you can; no commitment is needed. \nEmail: LeeTTM606@gmail.com to be placed on the mailing list for announcements and reading material.

SUMMARY:Clinic Cleaners
DESCRIPTION:Clinic Cleaners are volunteers who help us maintain a neat and tidy space for our patients at the Wildlife Clinic.\nWildlife rehabilitation can be messy work\, and volunteers foster a healthy environment by assisting with laundry\, sweeping floors\, and cleaning the lobby. This allows our expert staff to focus more time on caring for the thousands of animals that the Wildlife Clinic cares for every year.\nRegister Now\nCleaning materials and personal protective equipment\, such as gloves and masks\, are provided. Volunteers should wear clothing they don’t mind getting dirty (yes\, that includes animal waste) and sturdy closed-toe shoes. Clinic Cleaners will not be working directly with animals or have access to patient areas. Clinic Cleaners must be at least 18 years old to sign up. Due to limited space\, we are unable to accept walk-ins.\nCan’t make this date but want to attend an upcoming event? Fill out our volunteer application and we’ll let you know about upcoming volunteer opportunities here at the Schuylkill Center!

DESCRIPTION:Join us in making Vermicomposters from simple plastic bins to turn food scraps into “black gold” or rich compost.\n\n\n(Pre-registration required at least 24 hours in advance to participate in the event) \nTurn your food scraps into “black gold” with us! Join our hands-on workshop to create Vermicomposters from simple plastic bins and discover the magic of turning leftovers into rich\, nutritious compost. With the help of hardworking earthworms and microorganisms\, your food scraps will transform into worm castings—a powerhouse of nutrients\, boasting 7 times more phosphates\, 5 times more nitrogen\, and 11 times more potash than your average soil. Plus\, the “compost tea” produced during the process can be used as a nutritious liquid fertilizer\, ideal for potted plants and seedlings. Just remember\, your worms thrive best between 60–80°F\, so make sure you’ve got a cozy winter spot ready for your vermicomposters. \n \nThe workshop will be held in a heated greenhouse\, all materials and worms will be provided. \n \nPresenter Bio \nAnamaya Farthing-Kohl started a roof garden in Mexico City in 2014\, where they fell in with vermicomposting. They had a surplus of castings and worm tea and started gifting and selling bottles of “lombripis” (worm juice) in the Lagunilla market in Mexico City. Anamaya is a maker and solver of problems through diverse methods and materials.

SUMMARY:Historical Society of Pennsylvania presents Researching Building Ghosts: A Talk and Booksigning
DESCRIPTION:Join author Molly Lester and photographer Michael Bixler to discuss their new book\, Building Ghosts: Past Lives and Lost Places in a Changing City (Temple University Press\, November 2024)\, and the ghosts that reveal new truths and provocations about the changing city. For this engaging event\, Lester and Bixler explain and explore “Building ghosts\,” the idiosyncratic remnants or imprints of demolished buildings\, left behind on the sides of neighboring structures. Mostly seen in older Northeastern cities with rowhomes or party-wall adjacencies\, they can reveal remarkable things\, such as an old staircase going up the side of a building or plaster traces left by a set of shelves in an attic gable. As history in our changing cities is erased and remade\, these ghosts can be ephemeral or enduring. They can be quickly revealed and replaced in a neighborhood seeing rapid change or unveiled and never re-covered in a neighborhood that has not seen new construction in substantial time. The Historical Society of Pennsylvania proudly offers this evening of discovery onsite and virtually with the book available for purchase onsite.
