SUMMARY:Won’t You Be My Neighbor? Levittown\, Folcroft\, Whitman Park\, Mt. Airy.
DESCRIPTION:A roundtable discussion about race\, economic status\, and where people can live.\n\n\nWon’t You Be My Neighbor? Levittown\, Folcroft\, Whitman Park\, Mt. Airy. \nA roundtable conversation about race\, economic status\, and where people can live. \n \nAlex Baker\, whose parents were the first black family to move to Folcroft\, Delaware County will be our guest speaker. Others directly connected or witness to events depicted in the exhibition may also share their experiences\, to be followed by time for questions and comments. \nEach of the communities highlighted in the Rosalind Bloom’s “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” exhibition experienced attempts at housing integration during the Civil Rights Era. \n \nWe invite participants to think about: \n\nHow and why did these experiences differ?\nHow has the discussion of issues surrounding housing equity changed over the years?\nAre there lessons to be learned from the past?\n\n \nThis event and free and open to all. Suggested donation to attend is $5 per person.

SUMMARY:Saproxylic Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will create their own sculptures of saproxylic organisms to take home and learn about dead wood advocacy!\n\n\nThe term “saproxylic” refers to creatures who depend on dead trees for their survival. These critters are mostly hidden from view inside logs and hollow trunks\, but they form a large and diverse multispecies assemblage that is critical to forest health. \nSaproxylic creatures are under threat worldwide because dead wood is so often removed and destroyed out of a lack of understanding about its role in the environment. This issue is especially pressing in urban areas like Philadelphia\, but fortunately we can use art to protect dead wood habitats and raise awareness about its importance. \nIn this workshop\, participants will create their own sculptures of saproxylic organisms out of woodcrete to take home with them. They will learn how they can use their sculptures to protect dead trees in Philly\, and will be given information to help them become advocates for dead wood conservation. \n \n**Please note this RSVP does not include admission to the Morris Arboretum + Gardens. PennCard holders can enter the gardens for free. For more information about admissions pricing visit: https://www.morrisarboretum.org/visit/hours-pricing

SUMMARY:Annual Migratory Bird Census
DESCRIPTION:Preserve Manager Zane Miller guides this annual citizen-science effort to document birds at our Mariton Wildlife Sanctuary. Two decades of data reflects impressive avian diversity; birders find an average of 50 species each year.   \nMariton includes various habitats for thrushes\, flycatchers\, tanagers\, and a dozen warbler species. The Migratory Bird Census offers a great opportunity to hone observation skills and learn more about the species that migrate through the region.
