SUMMARY:Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s The Beautyful Ones Mural Dedication
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 4 | 12–4 pm | 5547 Chester Ave\, Philadelphia \nJoin us for a massive afternoon block party\, celebrating Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s new mural in the heart of the city’s Africatown neighborhood. Mural Arts and the Philadelphia Museum of Art have collaborated to bring the internationally renowned artist to Philadelphia to recreate her artwork\, The Beautyful Ones Series #1c\, as her first permanent public art installation. \nIn her methodically layered compositions\, Crosby combines painted depictions of people\, places\, and subjects from her life with photographic transfers derived from her personal image archive\, Nigerian magazines\, and other mass media sources. The resulting works are visual tapestries that bring to life the personal and social dimensions of contemporary life while powerfully expressing the complexities of African diasporic identity. \nThis Saturday afternoon event is open to the public\, with free water ice and refreshments\, live African dance and drum performances\, spirited DJ sets\, and Henna painting\, tote bag airbrushing\, and other art activations.

SUMMARY:October First Saturday Open House—The Birds\, the Bees and the Pawpaw Trees
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we unveil the Wagner’s new native plant pollinator gardens and learn all about the birds\, the bees and our Pawpaw trees!\n\n\nExplore the Wagner inside and out during this special Open House! In addition to enjoying the wonders of the museum\, you can step outside to observe nature and learn about the array of native plants that make the Wagner’s yard a green oasis for humans and all kinds of local fauna. \nOver the summer we replanted the Wagner’s teaching gardens\, removing invasive species and adding a variety of native plants designed to attract birds\, bees\, butterflies and other pollinators. We also added different kinds of milkweed as sustenance for endangered monarch butterflies that pass through our yard during their long migration. Garden designer Christina Doe will provide tours of the gardens at 1 and 3 pm\, explaining the garden design and how it supports our educational mission while providing food and habitat for urban wildlife and a feast for the eyes of our visitors. \nWe will have binoculars\, magnifying glasses\, nature identification guides\, and friendly staff on hand throughout the day to teach about the natural resources in our yard. \nIn the Lecture Hall at 2 pm\, botanist and chemical ecologist Dr. Kate Goodrich from Widener University\, will give a lively presentation: Flowers\, Flies and Fermentation\, about the pollination ecology of the native pawpaw. The pawpaw is a fascinating local tree that produces the largest native fruits in North America. A staple for indigenous people and early colonists\, the pawpaw has a long local history and is gaining fans for the mango-like fruit that ripens in late summer. The Wagner’s three pawpaw trees produce an abundance of fruit. As part of the day\, there will be young pawpaw plants\, grown from seeds in our yard\, and a few other select plants for sale to plant in your own garden. \n\n\n\nThe Exhibit Hall will be open from 12 – 4pm where visitors can see the full range of our natural history collection with 100\,000+ specimens on display\, including local birds like the Purple Martin\, Yellow-winged Sparrow\, and American Goldfinch\, and a large collection of insects\, many of which were collected on the Wagner’s grounds. Visitors can wander at their own pace\, follow the path of one of our themed scavenger hunts\, or even fill in a coloring page with images from the Wagner’s library! \n \nAdmission is free to everyone and donations are welcome to support our mission. \n \nThings to Know Before Your Visit\n\nWalk-ins are welcome! Advance registration speeds your entry to the museum. Visitors who register in advance do not need to present their registration or confirmation email at the desk—just your name!\nThere is no coat check or place to stow personal items – please travel light.\nThe museum is located on the second floor of the building. There are 5 steps at the entryway and a flight of stairs to access the museum. It is not wheelchair accessible.\nTo protect the specimens and our historic interiors\, photography is not allowed in the museum. Open containers of food and drink are not permitted in the building.\nThe Institute does not have a parking lot. Street parking on Montgomery Avenue and 17th Street is free. There is 2-hour free parking on Bouvier Street and on many blocks near the Wagner and metered parking on Cecil B. Moore Avenue. The nearest parking garage is at the Liacouras Center on 15th Street and Montgomery Avenue.\n \n\n\nA dream that keeps growing… \nIn 1855\, William Wagner had a dream of providing free science education to anyone who wanted to learn\, regardless of background or ability to pay. Today\, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education\, not only through the museum\, but through a wide range of courses\, lectures\, field trips\, and children’s science programs. Donations also assist us in caring for the museum and library collections and in preserving our wonderful building\, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. To learn more about what we do please visit our website. \n \nRegistration Information\nIn keeping with its original charter\, admission is FREE—donations are suggested to ensure the future and quality of Wagner’s free education programs and to preserve its National Landmark building and collections. \nSuggested Donations \n$25/Family \n$10/adult \n$5/student \nFor any questions\, please email communications@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x17. \nIf you are a group leader and wish to bring a group of 10 or more to the program\, please email our museum educator\, TobeyC@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x17. \nIf you would like to check your membership status or become a member\, please email KellyT@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x11.

DESCRIPTION:Make your own collage protest poster inspired by Nicolo Gentile’s public artwork Bar None at this Collage Philadelphia-facilitated workshop!\n\n\nThe Association for Public Art (aPA) in partnership with the Free Library of Philadelphia’s Exhibitions presents a hands-on workshop that explores the collage medium as a response and in dialogue with artist Nicolo Gentile’s public artwork Bar None\, commissioned for aPA’s 2025 Art on the Parkway program and currently on view at Maja Park at 22nd Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway through October 26\, 2025. Facilitated by Collage Philadelphia\, participants will delve into the art of cutting and reassembling printed historic images and newspaper headlines. By the end of the workshop\, participants will have built their own narratives around public spaces as sites of civic gathering\, drawing inspiration from Bar None’s homage to the layered legacy of protest and public assembly that defines the iconic Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia. This workshop will take place over two hours. \nMaximum capacity is 30 participants\, so please register in advance.

SUMMARY:"Sessions with the Muse" Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION:“Sessions with the Muse” offers a peek into my creative process\, showcasing the documentation of my experiments\, the pages of my journals\, and an array of samples\, messy prototypes\, doodles\, sketches\, and pieces that are complete—for now—alongside those that remain works in progress. This collection emphasizes process and materials\, each drawing me back to nature and\, ultimately\, to my own wild nature. These sessions are practices\, pathways I’ve explored to find inspiration: looking to the light within\, channeling source energy\, and becoming quiet enough to hear the golden wisdom of ancestors. Through these pathways\, I seek the glow of inner muses to guide practices and illuminate pathways to purposeful\, meaningful creation. \nOver the last year as artist-in-residence at the Random Tea Room\, I’m was able to share the creative practices that help me connect with myself\, with nature\, with others\, and with sources of creative energy and inspiration—the muse within. I look forward to creating\, solving small process puzzles\, and playing together. Join me for journaling\, weaving\, mending\, natural dyeing… and plenty of tea and plant magic! I can’t create this without you\, so come\, bring your muses\, and let’s have tea together. \nNicole Duprée \nAbout/ Bio \nNicole Duprée is a teaching artist and founder of Indigo in Green–a Philadelphia-based creative workshop producing artisanal\, natural art supplies and educational resources. SUMMARY:Spider Web Stained Glass
DESCRIPTION:Assemble your very own Glass Spider Web sun catcher while learning the basics of how to make Stained Glass\n\n\nWith this workshop you will have a chance to learn about the basics of building stained glass by putting together a 12 piece spider web design. This class will focus on copper foiling and soldering with no glass cutting. You can choose your web color from a combo of clear\, black\, and white glass. We will be wrapping the piece in lead (not toxic to work with) and adding a hanger or metal stick. \nThis workshop is simple enough for beginners but it is not recommended for anyone without interest in learning. The session will involve educating you on all the steps\, using the tools\, and assembling a stained glass spider web with all glass pieces already cut out. This is essentially an instructed work session to make your own spider web\, and will take the entire workshop to complete your piece. We will have a 30 minute break during the workshop session and there are many local shops to grab a quick lunch to eat in the studio. In the event that you’d rather hang out and chat while working and you don’t finish your piece\, you can come back during our open studio hours (most Friday nights) to finish your piece. \nYou’ll choose the glass\, wrap your pieces\, and spend a lot of time with a personal solder to attach them together. This is a beginners project but is very involved. We will be working to wrap our glass and solder for most of the workshop. \nWhile working\, your instructor is happy to share all the best websites and shops to help guide you towards building your own stained glass studio. Come with questions if you’re looking to continue the glass journey\, or show up just for the experience. No previous knowledge necessary\, but you should be committed to doing the process if you are completely beginner. \nAbout the Location: The coven studio is located in the heart of Olde City in a below ground storefront. There are 10 steps down to get into the space\, and our ceilings are not very high. Anyone over 6’4″ will have watch their head until they have a seat. Any more questions about accessibility-please reach out! \nNote about Payment: If you would like to save yourself some dollars (eventbrite fees can really add up!) you can reach out directly for info on paying with Venmo or Paypal. If you’d liek to send money directly please email info@thecraftcoven.org and we will confirm there is still space and add you to the attendees after payment is sent.

See you there! \n\n\n\n\nMore about Black Lotus HHC \n \nBlack Lotus Holistic Healing Collective is known for is a space designed for BIPOC healers/practitioners to be centered in the healing in order for them to heal those in the BIPOC community. Vibrational healing is the ancient art of healing with sound; it traces back to ancient Egypt & Tibet. Sound vibrations can heal the physical body at a cellular level by adjusting blockages and imbalances. These imbalances can cause the body to have a slower frequency vibration which may lead to dis-ease or illnesses. Natural healing sound frequencies can be transferred or introduced externally or directly into the body to create a more harmonious state. \nAt Black Lotus\, we combine the use of crystal chakra singing bowls\, gongs\, tuning forks\, and more to give a relaxing & transformative experience. We can balance chakras\, repair auras\, uplift the mood or help with grounding. Vibrational healing is a great tool for meditation\, alleviating stress\, and relaxing stiff or sore muscles. \nFor more visit: www.diasporaeducationalservices.org/black-lotus \nhttps://linktr.ee/blacklotushhc \n\n\n\nDIRECTIONS: \n \nBlack Lotus is not on Lincoln Drive despite the address…it is actually on Rittenhousetown Lane.
