SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: Kafka and Prague
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Kafka and Prague\,” on how a great author and his works were shaped by the history\, culture\, and landscape of a city\, with Cynthia Paces\, professor of history at The College of New Jersey\, teacher of courses on European history and Holocaust studies\, and author of two books on Prague. \nWhere we’re from can profoundly shape how we think\, what we create\, and what we end up doing with our lives. Gain a much deeper understanding of Franz Kafka\, the acclaimed and influential author whose prophetic work anticipated European totalitarianism and still shapes dystopian visions\, through a talk examining Kafka’s relationship with the city of Prague and those who lived there. \nYour guide on this scholarly journey\, Professor Cynthia Paces\, has lived and worked in Prague and is the author of Prague: The Heart of Europe and Prague Panoramas: National Memory and Sacred Space in the Twentieth Century. She has extensively researched how Kafka\, a German-Jewish writer\, came to symbolize the capital of the Czech Republic. \nWe’ll start by looking at how Kafka’s worldview was influenced by his childhood in Prague’s Old Town during a time when the city was rapidly expanding and industrializing and shifting from being a primarily German-speaking place to being the center of Czech nationalism and culture. Born in 1883 only steps away from the city’s former Jewish Ghetto\, as a boy Kafka watched the destruction of the Jewish Quarter during an urban sanitation project. The event profoundly affected him\, prompting him to later remark: “We walk through the broad streets of the newly built town” but “inside we tremble just as before in the ancient streets of our misery.” \nProfessor Paces will discuss Kafka’s relationship to Prague’s rich Jewish heritage\, considering how he was influenced by the legacy of the Talmudic scholar Rabbi Loew and by folklore telling of the Golem of Prague\, a terrifying monster that Loew was said to have shaped from clay and given life. She’ll describe Kafka’s love for the Yiddish Theater and his involvement with the Prague Circle\, a group of German-Jewish intellectuals including Albert Einstein and the author Max Brod. \nWe’ll explore the tensions between Kafka’s creative endeavors and his work as a bureaucrat during Prague’s rapid modernization in the early twentieth century. You’ll learn about the Prague homes where he resided and cafés where he socialized. \nAlthough Prague place names appear in only one Kafka story\, the city shaped his fiction. The claustrophobic or ominous settings of works like The Metamorphosis and The Castle recall Prague’s labyrinthine streets\, modern office buildings\, and looming castle. We’ll listen for echoes of Prague’s landscape and landmarks in Kafka’s writings and end by exploring Kafka’s afterlife as a cultural icon of post-Communist Prague. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage by Canva.

SUMMARY:Clay Play Open Studio Making
DESCRIPTION:Come out and touch some clay!\n\n\nThis is an open session clay making workshop. Each person will receive 1-2 pounds of clay per session and access to our basic tools and supplies. Pieces can be glazed with color and will be once fired and ready for pickup in 3-4 weeks. We will have limited colors available and suggest that you purchase your own Stroke and Coat glaze if you’d like consistent color and control. You’re welcome to bring any of your own tools. \nThe instructor leading your session will have a basic project that you can build if you aren’t working independantly. Some sessions will be more guided than others. \n \nFor most people we recommend that you can complete your piece in the 2 hour session\, leave it at the studio to dry and be fired for you. Alternatively you can come to this session\, take your piece home to finish and dry it fully\, then bring it back in the future to have it fired. We will have a clay artist on site that can answer technical questions and get you started with a project idea. \nAny unfinished clay pieces should go home with you. We will do our best to provide you with plastic and wrap enough to walk out with your piece so you can keep it moist enough to complete it and dry it ahead of firing. Please plan ahead if you know you were looking to make something complex that you’ll want to take home and continue working on.This is an ongoing workshop offering every month except through the Summer \n \nSuggested age is adults but ages 7+up can attend along with a paying adult. \n \nAbout your instructors: \nCassie Jones (pronouns: She/They) is the craft coven founder and lead organizer. She has her hands in most crafts but has a great passion for anything scultping. When running open studio you can expect a concentration on non-funtional applications and decorative projects. Currently working on staff at Black Hound Clay studio Cassie has also worked many years at Painting with a Twist in Philadelphia\, run a leather brand CUSP by Cassie\, is building a line of chain stitch embroidered patches\, as well as many other ventures since graduating from The Savannah College of Art and Design in 2010. \n \n(on teaching haitus until March while building houses in MOAB) \nClay artist Sea Star (pronouns: they/them and she/her) has been making sculptures with clay since they were 2 years old. The material has been a great exercise in play\, design\, and patience. Over the years\, they have harvested and processed unique clays from Maine to Tennessee to Puerto Rico. In 2022 Sea earned a BFA in Interdisciplinary Sculpture from MICA and currently works as a Glaze and Decoration Technician for a Philadelphia pottery manufacturer. \n \nAbout the space:This event is located in the Starr Garden Playground rec center. When you enter the gates for the playground you will walk to the right of the building to the entrance that is facing Lombard Street. The rec center is mostly used for after school programs and kids camps but is empty in the evenings so they allow us to have adult programming. You’re welcome to bring your own water bottle or snacks\, and there will be light music and a social studio atmosphere rather than a classroom. \nOrganized by The Craft Coven\, this event is part of a community oriented series of creative enrichment projects focused on affordability for all. For more information on the group’s missions and to get involved more widely check out https://www.TheCraftCoven.org and become a Member for all the inside opportunities and classes. If you woud like updates on pieces that are in the firing process please watch the IG account @CassiesCraftCoven for updates\, or email Info@TheCraftCoven.org with the date you attended.

SUMMARY:Democracy\, Gender\, & Leadership: President Nandi-Ndaitwah of Namibia
DESCRIPTION:Join PWH for a conversation with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of Namibia\, the second woman to be elected President in Africa.\n\n\nPlease join Perry World House for a conversation with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of Namibia. President Nandi-Ndaitwah began her term in March 2025 as only the second woman ever elected president in Africa\, and the first in Namibia. Today\, under President Nandi-Ndaitwah’s leadership\, two thirds of Namibia’s cabinet positions are held by women\, including offices in foreign affairs\, finance\, health\, and education. \nHer election comes at a time when democracy globally is under threat and policies supporting women’s empowerment are being rolled back on every continent\, including Africa. At the same time\, surveys show that support for democracy in Africa is strong: two-thirds of Africans say they prefer democracy to any other system of government. \nPresident Nandi-Ndaitwah has announced a commitment to democracy\, gender equality\, improved governance\, and economic growth. What can we learn from Namibia’s experience? What can it tell us about democracy and gender in the region and beyond? On a continent where the median age is 19\, the population is set to double to 2.5 billion by 2050\, and global share of GDP could triple in the next two decades\, the answers to these questions are of global importance. \n\n\nSPEAKER\n \nH.E. Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was elected president of Namibia in December 2024. Her political career started in 1966 when she joined the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) at the age of 14. In 1974\, she left the country to join SWAPO in exile to fight for Namibia’s independence. She returned to Namibia in 1989 and following Independence in 1990\, she was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. She served as a Minister of Women Affairs and Child Welfare from 2000-2005 where she played a pivotal role in advocating for the protection of the rights of women and children both domestically and internationally. She has held other ministerial positions including Minister of Environment and Tourism and Minister of Foreign Affairs. H.E. Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is married to the former Chief of Defence Force of the Republic of Namibia\, Lieutenant-General (Rtd) Epaphras Denga Ndaitwah with whom she shares three sons. \n \nMODERATOR\nJoseph Asunka has served as CEO of Afrobarometer since April 2021. He was previously program officer in the Global Development and Population program at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation\, where he managed a portfolio of grants that support efforts to increase transparency and accountability in fiscal governance and foster citizen participation to improve public services in developing countries. \nBefore joining Hewlett\, Joseph was a lecturer in political science at the University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA)\, where he taught courses on African politics\, political economy of development\, research methods\, and data analysis. Prior to that\, he was program officer at the Ghana Center for Democratic Development\, a Core Partner of Afrobarometer. He served as data manager for Afrobarometer prior to his PhD studies at UCLA. \nJoseph’s research interests include distributive politics\, elections and electoral processes\, and migration. He has published in journals such as the British Journal of Political Science\, Research and Politics\, and Population Research and Policy Review. Born in Ghana\, Joseph holds a PhD in political science from UCLA.

SUMMARY:Weeknights at the Wagner—A Flood of Pictures—Photography Deepens the Waters
DESCRIPTION:Learn how illustrations\, photographs and other visual communications came to permeate everyday lives and experiences in the United States.\n\n\nWEEKNIGHTS AT THE WAGNER\nA Flood of Pictures: Photography Deepens the Waters\nwith Dr. Michael Leja\, James and Nan Wagner Farquhar Professor Emeritus of History of Art\, University of Pennsylvania\nIn a contemporary society completely saturated with visual art\, advertising\, and other media\, it is difficult to imagine pictures as a novel way of communicating. At this Weeknights at the Wagner talk\, Dr. Michael Leja will take us back to the formative period of this cultural transformation in the U.S.—three decades before the Civil War—when pictures began to permeate everyday life. This flood of images included illustrations in books\, pamphlets\, and newspapers; photographs on cards; prints of various kinds; posters and broadsheets; and large scale paintings for theatrical displays. In a short span of time pictures assumed important functions by supplementing\, and in some cases overshadowing\, verbal texts in conveying news and information. \nDr. Leja will discuss the emerging technologies that enabled this cultural shift\, with a focus on photography. In Philadelphia\, the Langenheim Brothers introduced a string of innovations that led to travel stereographs becoming the first type of photograph to achieve mass distribution. They had a significant but under-appreciated role in bringing photography into the flood of pictures. \nDr. Leja will be speaking from his new book\, “A Flood of Pictures: The Formation of a Picture Culture in the United States” (2025)\, which reconstructs the era in which mass-produced pictures in many media began to permeate Americans’ everyday lives. \nThe book will be available for purchase and a book signing will follow the talk. \nProgram Schedule: \nMuseum open until 5:45 pm. \n6 – 7:30 pm: Talk and Q&A in the Lecture Hall. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\nMichael Leja is James and Nan Wagner Farquhar Professor Emeritus of History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania. He studies the visual arts in various media (painting\, sculpture\, film\, photography\, prints\, illustrations) in the 19th and 20th centuries\, primarily in the United States. His work is multidisciplinary and strives to understand visual artifacts in relation to contemporary cultural\, social\, political\, and intellectual developments. He has authored many books\, including the most recent “A Flood of Pictures: The Formation of a Picture Culture in the United States” (2025). \n\n\n\nA dream that keeps growing… \nIn 1855\, William Wagner had a dream of providing free science education to anyone who wanted to learn\, regardless of background or ability to pay. Today\, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education\, not only through the museum\, but through a wide range of courses\, lectures\, field trips\, and children’s science programs. Donations also assist us in caring for the museum and library collections and in preserving our wonderful building\, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. To learn more about what we do please visit our website. \n \nRegistration Information\nIn keeping with its original charter\, admission to the lecture is free—donations are suggested to ensure the future and quality of Wagner’s free education programs and to preserve its National Landmark building and collections. \nSuggested Donations \n$10/adult \n$5/student \nFor any questions\, please email communications@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x17. \nIf you would like to check your membership status or become a member\, please email KellyT@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x11. \nImages: \n“Mermaids\,” Sunday Mercury (New York)\, July 17\, 1842\, p. 1\, wood engraving\, 4 x 6.75 in.\, Library of Congress. \nWilliam Langenheim\, Frederick Langenheim Looking at Talbotypes\, 1849-51\, daguerreotype\, 4.75 x 3.5 in.
