SUMMARY:Owl Howl: Section D
DESCRIPTION:Many people have heard an owl\, but few have ever seen one. Mt. Cuba’s varied landscapes and topography provide the ideal habitats for three of Delaware’s native owl species – the barred\, great horned\, and Eastern screech – and winter is the best time to spot them roosting in our trees. Owls are nocturnal so join us as we search for them just after dusk. Following a brief introductory lecture\, we’ll head into the garden and listen for their unique calls. Dress for the weather.\nThis program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM on Wednesday\, February 7\, 2025 (Rain Date: Wednesday\, February 21).\nAbout the Instructors:\nJoe Sebastiani is the Director of Adult Engagement for the Delaware Nature Society. He is passionate about birds and wildlife\, founded the Ashland Hawk Watch\, and edits Delaware eBird\, an online checklist program\, for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.\nIan Stewart\, PhD\, was raised in Newcastle\, England and received a doctorate in ornithology from the University of Leicester. He has conducted research on tree swallows and bluebirds and how local land management activities are affecting bird numbers and diversity throughout the year. Ian works for the Delaware Nature Society where he is studying the effects of non-native plants on birds.

SUMMARY:First Friday Opening Reception: Echoes of Change and Origin
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the opening of Echoes of Change and Origin at The National Old City Apartments\n\n\nJoin us for the Opening Reception of Echoes of Change and Origin! Featuring work by Deborah Moss Marris and Demetra Tassiou. \nFriday\, February 7th\, 6p – 8p \n \nAbout the Exhibition: \nEchoes of Change and Origin presents a compelling exploration of humanity’s complex relationship with the natural world. Featuring the works of Deborah Moss Marris and Demetra Tassiou\, whose layered approaches uncover profound narratives of transformation\, memory\, and connection. \nMarris delves into the urgent themes of climate change and pollution. Through meticulously layered images of nature and animals\, her work juxtaposes the beauty of the natural world with its fragility in the face of atmospheric and environmental degradation. Her pieces evoke a visceral sense of how external landscapes mirror the internal\, the shifting climates within us shaped by a planet in flux. \nIn contrast\, Tassiou\, a Greek-American artist\, turns inward to reconstruct her ties to her homeland. Her abstracted\, memory-driven compositions layer impressions of natural scenes\, offering a dreamlike reimagining of a place both lost and retained in her psyche. Her work invites viewers to consider how landscapes are not merely physical spaces but repositories of identity\, nostalgia\, and cultural heritage. \nTogether\, these artists illustrate the dualities inherent in our interaction with nature: external versus internal\, global versus personal\, degradation versus preservation. Their shared use of layering serves as both a technique and metaphor\, symbolizing the interconnected strata of memory\, identity\, and environmental impact. \nThis exhibition not only highlights the unique approaches of these artists but also asks critical questions about our shared future. How do we reconcile the past with the rapidly changing present? What responsibilities do we hold as stewards of the environment? Through their layered visions\, the artists prompt us to reflect on the imprints we leave on the earth\, and the imprints it leaves on us. \nLearn More: \nhttps://www.inliquid.org/satellite-events/echos-of-change-origin
