SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: The Grim(m) and Glorious Story of Children's Lit
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “The Grim(m) and Glorious Story of Children’s Lit\,” on the history of tales that stick with us well into adulthood\, with Melissa Jensen\, award-winning lecturer in English literature at the University of Pennsylvania and scholar of Children’s Literature\, the Gothic\, and adolescence in media and society. \nJust about every single one of us can quickly invoke a favorite or personally influential children’s book. We can finish nursery rhyme lines and almost instinctively sing along with songs from countless Disney films. But what do we really know about the body of literature that played such a profound role in shaping our young minds? \nJoin Children’s Literature scholar and author Melissa Jensen for a talk that will have you thinking about the beloved books of your formative years in an entirely new way. \nShe will explore the evolution and convolution of Children’s Literature from the 17th to 21st centuries\, discussing the beloved\, the famous\, and the just plain odd. She’ll help you understand why these books are not just an integral part of the developmental fabric of our youth\, but also have critical literary\, scholarly\, and cultural importance. \nHer talk will lean into more than three centuries of grim(m) messaging in books for children\, with takeaways from “Do good or get dead” to “Do bad and get dead” to “Do good and get dead anyway.” She’ll discuss whether plunking death front and center in the literature makes perfect sense or is counterintuitive. \nWe’ll discuss beginnings\, endings\, and countless other elements that determine the value of “kidlit.” We’ll look at how far Disney’s Ariel is from Andersen’s original Little Mermaid\, and how that difference turns a whole new lens on the meaning of “happily ever after.” \nAmong the questions we’ll tackle: Is there a value in contemporary kids knowing centuries-old nursery rhymes involving babies falling out of trees? Why does it work that Jensen’s all-time favorite novel—not just children’s novel\, but novel of any sort—begins with “Where’s Papa going with that ax?” (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage: From an Arthur Rackham illustration of the Brothers Grimm’s “Hansel and Gretel” as published by Dutton and Company in 1920 (New York Public Library / The Internet Archive).

DESCRIPTION:Join coven organizer Cassie Jones in an open studio session of discussion and crafty play. Different mediums each day\, & enjoy a free beer!\n\n\nCome by the coven studio at 10 North Third Street and join in on whatever craft I’ve got planned for the group. Throwback style to hosting events in my basement for years\, I get to choose the craft\, and you just show up! \nThis series will serve as a creative exploration project both for me\, and for anyone that chooses to come to multiple sessions. People often ask me how I’ve built up a collection of so many different skillsets in the craft and art world- this is how. I’ll be inviting you all into my studio to see how I work from one project to the next\, and how each of them are treated as a way to hone my artistic mind and keep the motivations flowing in a productive direction. \nEach session will begin with a circle discussion of what we’ve been processing in our art lately\, and where we’d like things to go next. We’ll trade feedback with anyone looking for insight on their work\, and each person will have an alotted time to speak -or not speak- After the discussion portion of our workshop I’ll introduce the skill for the day\, something different for each group. Some of the projects that are on the list for this summer are: \n-Puppet Building \n-Stop Animation \n-Gelli Printing \n-Cyanotypes \n-Accessory Design \nWe’ll make some things together and work open studio style. Feel free to bring your own projects and you have access to the tools on hand. Message if you’re looking for something specific like a sewing machine etc. \nBYO snacks\, beverages\, party favors etc. I’ll have beers available\, filtered water and a handful of tea varieties. \nAbout the Location: \nThe coven studio is located in the heart of Olde City in a below ground storefront. There are 10 steps down to get into the space\, and our ceilings are not very high. Anyone over 6’4″ will have watch their head until they have a seat. SUMMARY:In Pursuit of Preservation: A Community Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Hear from experts and community members shaping what it means to protect Black Historic Districts.\n\n\nThe Dox Thrash House Project\, Brewerytown-Sharswood Neighborhood Coalition\, and Community Design Collaborative presents “In Pursuit of Preservation: A Community Conversation for our Black Historic District\,” a panel discussion. \nProduced by Scribe Video Center for the North Philadelphia History Festival. \n___________________________________________________________________________________________ \nABOUT THE PROJECT: \nThe Dox Thrash House Project\, Brewerytown-Sharswood Neighborhood Coalition\, and Community Design Collaborative are hosting an important community conversation about officially nominating their neighborhood as a Local Historic District! Come together with neighbors\, cultural stewards\, and design thinkers for a panel discussion to explore how historic district recognition can reflect who we are\, protect what we’ve built\, and shape a future that honors our roots. \nThe historic Dox Thrash House at 2340 Cecil B. Moore Avenue is more than just a building—it’s a cornerstone of Philadelphia’s Black Renaissance and a symbol of our community’s rich artistic legacy. As the former home and studio of pioneering printmaker Dox Thrash\, who co-invented the carborundum mezzotint technique while working with the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Art Project\, this Victorian house built in 1895 represents a crucial piece of our neighborhood’s cultural identity. \n___________________________________________________________________________________________ \nABOUT THE CULTURAL WORKERS: \nThe Dox Thrash House Project is a Black-led historic preservation initiative focused on restoring the former home of pioneering artist Dox Thrash and nominating the surrounding Sharswood neighborhood as a historic district. Backed by community leadership\, the project trains residents in survey\, documentation\, and preservation practices to reclaim and protect their cultural heritage. It advances design justice and equity in the built environment through grassroots engagement and education. \nBSNC: Brewerytown-Sharswood Neighborhood Coalition is a resident-led community group of Brewerytown + Sharswood in North Philly. They organize and mobilize holistically to meet the needs and interests of neighbors\, families\, and each other. They also build allyship with fellow North Philly neighbors! \nCommunity Design Collaborative: Preserving Black Presence (PBP) is an initiative of the Community Design Collaborative\, a nonprofit that partners with communities to shape equitable\, thriving environments. PBP supports Black-led historic sites by providing technical assistance\, preservation planning\, and capacity-building resources. The initiative aims to address systemic inequities in preservation and ensure long-term sustainability for culturally significant spaces. \n___________________________________________________________________________________________ \nABOUT THE FESTIVAL: \nThe North Philadelphia History Festival (NPHF) is a cultural celebration of the African American and Puerto Rican communities in North Philadelphia. SUMMARY:Return of the Freedom Library
DESCRIPTION:Jubilee students present their version of the Freedom Library honoring Dr. John Churchville\n\n\nScribe Video Center in partnership with Jubilee School Students present “Return of the Freedom Library\,” a pop-up library and celebration of Black history and literature. \n__________________________________________________________________________________________ \nABOUT THE PROJECT: \nIn 1964\, John Churchville\, inspired by the work of Malcolm X\, created the Freedom Library. Its purpose was to expose his North Philadelphia community to the under-told stories of Black history and literature. \nOn July 25th\, Jubilee students in grades 4th and 5th grades will present their version of the Freedom Library in order to honor the legacy of the original library and its founder\, Dr. John Churchville. The event will take place in a large tent outside the Wagner Institute of Science\, not far from where the original Freedom Library was. Bookshelves will be filled with books telling stories of people of color from Philadelphia and around the world. Most of the books were written\, illustrated and published by Jubilee students through their student-created publishing company\, Jubilee Voices Publishing House. \nThe main speaker at the event will be Dr. John Churchville\, who will speak about the process of creating the Freedom Library\, how it evolved into a school\, and how it eventually gave birth to a powerful coalition of North Philadelphia community members called the Black People’s Unity Movement. Through poetry and artwork\, Jubilee students will honor members of the BPUM who are no longer with us and will pay tribute to them through a ceremony of libations. \nOther activities throughout the day will include story time for children\, a time for playing Black history games\, and a dance performed by Jubilee students. SUMMARY:A Strange Place for A Stitch- Embroidery Workshop with Danielle Clough
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multi-day workshop for advanced embroidery techniques taught by artist Danielle Clough.\n\n\nA Strange Place for a Stitch is a 3-day intermediate to advanced workshop. Artist Danielle Clough will teach a small class her secret techniques to sew without fabric\, as seen in her series What a Racket\, which she has been building for 9 years. \nYou will learn to stitch on alternative surfaces. This workshop builds confidence in thinking outside of the pattern and material. Participants will explore colour through a variety of value and palette exercises. This will be followed by Stitch Play\, which includes colour blending and creating dimension and texture with thread. \nBy the end of the workshop\, participants discover their voice in colour while building skills to continue creating unique designs. Learn to embrace your creative voice while becoming more playful in finding unique surfaces for stitching. \nSkill level:This is an intermediate workshop on embroidery and materials. A general understanding of basic embroidery is helpful. \nWhat will be provided? Each person will receive an embroidery kit and Danielle will provide threads\, fabric\, pens\, pencils and other goodies she thinks you may need. There is no rush with embroidery\, so your bespoke take-home kit means you can keep the sewing going. \nWhat do I need to bring?Bring your phone! We will use this and explore how your everyday tool can help your creative process. If you have your favourite pencil or pens\, bring them along too! But this is not a requirement. \nWhen?The workshop will occur three days in a row from Friday\, July 25th through Sunday\, July 27th. The workshop will be from 11:00am – 5:00pm each day with a meal break built into the daily schedule. \nDo you have local recommendations if I am traveling? \nYES! We know many of you will be traveling to Philadelphia for this workshop. Please email info@paradigm-gallery.com if you have any questions about traveling to Philadelphia\, booking a hotel in the area\, etc. We will also make sure to have plenty of food\, art\, and fun recommendations for you to enjoy while in Philadelphia for the workshop. \nBasic to advanced sewing experience is required.
