SUMMARY:Celebrate National Public Lands Day at Sankofa Community Farm
DESCRIPTION:Bartram’s Garden will serve as the signature event site for National Public Lands Day (NPLD) 2025\, a nationwide celebration of the places that connect us all. NPLD signature sites are selected because they embody the annual theme; this year’s theme\, “Our Home Outdoors”\, reminds us that public lands are more than just scenic spaces– they are where we gather\, grow\, and feel at home. This event is in partnership with the National Environmental Education Foundation\, the nonprofit coordinator of National Public Lands Day for more than 30 years. \nJoin us at Sankofa Community Farm in the morning for hands-on activities and community connection. Volunteers will work alongside Farm staff on projects\, including seasonal plantings\, harvesting\, weeding\, invasive species removal\, and orchard support. No experience is necessary.  Attendees will also have the chance to enter a raffle for a chance to win a pair of TEVAs. \nVolunteers will meet at the Sankofa Community Farm at 9:30 AM and be separated into groups and provided with instructions and safety protocols for the day. Out of respect and safety for our staff and others\, please arrive on time. \nPLEASE NOTE: Each adult must register individually in order to complete the waiver. Parents/guardians must complete registration for individuals 18 and under. \nRegistration full but would like to still participate? Please contact Kimani Keaton at kimani@bartramsgarden.org to be added to our waitlist. \nPlease also email Kimani immediately if you plan on cancelling your attendance\, so that we may make room for those on our waitlist. \nThank you! \nHealth reminders: We are in accordance with Pennsylvania and the City of Philadelphia’s current COVID-19 response levels. Please follow the link to stay up-to-date on our city’s protocols. If you are sick or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms\, please do not volunteer.

SUMMARY:Celebrate National Public Lands Day with a Playspace Build with TinyWPA
DESCRIPTION:Bartram’s Garden will serve as the signature event site for National Public Lands Day (NPLD) 2025\, a nationwide celebration of the places that connect us all. NPLD signature sites are selected because they embody the annual theme; this year’s theme\, “Our Home Outdoors”\, reminds us that public lands are more than just scenic spaces- they are where we gather\, grow\, and feel at home. This event is in partnership with the National Environmental Education Foundation\, the nonprofit coordinator of National Public Lands Day for more than 30 years. \nJoin us in the afternoon for hands-on activities and community connection. Volunteers will work alongside staff and TinyWPA project leaders to support the construction and installation of the new Bartram’s Garden playful learning space through a number of different tasks\, including building\, painting\, digging\, and landscape work! No experience is necessary. Attendees will also have the chance to enter a raffle for a chance to win a pair of TEVAs. \nRegistered volunteers will meet at the Welcome Center promptly at 12:00 PM. TinyWPA project leaders will provide instructions and safety protocols for the day. Out of respect and safety for our staff and others\, please arrive on time. \nPLEASE NOTE: Each adult must register individually in order to complete the required waivers. Parents/guardians must complete registration for individuals 18 and under. Capacity is limited; participants MUST be pre-registered (using link below) in order to partake. Our volunteer events often reach capacity quickly. If this event is sold out\, you may contact Kimani Keaton at kimani@bartramsgarden.org to be added to the waitlist. If you are no longer able to attend\, please email Kimani as soon as possible\, so we can offer your spot to someone on the waitlist. Thank you! \nHealth reminders: We are in accordance with Pennsylvania and the City of Philadelphia’s current COVID-19 response levels. Please follow the link to stay up-to-date on our city’s protocols. If you are sick or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms\, please do not volunteer.

SUMMARY:Epitaphs From a Forgotten Cemetery: Opera at Mount Vernon
DESCRIPTION:Join Opera on Tap Philly at Mount Vernon Cemetery for a classical recital tour at dusk through this hidden gem.\n\n\nJoin Opera on Tap Philadelphia at Mount Vernon Cemetery\, a forgotten Philly gem\, as we usher in spooky season! Enjoy classical singing as the sun sets on a tour of this historical graveyard. \n \nGates will open at 5:30pm\, with the cemetery tour to begin around 6:00pm. \n \nThe tour will make stops at specific locations throughout the cemetery\, where our singers will perform classical songs and opera arias befitting the surroundings. We’ll share stories of nature\, night\, death\, remembrance\, in multiple languages throughout all classical eras. \n \nWe’ll continue past sunset\, concluding back at the cemetery gate around 7:30pm. \n \nPerformers to be announced! \n \nMore about our gem\, Mount Vernon Cemetery. \nEstablished in 1856\, historic Mount Vernon Cemetery (MVC) is the final resting place of approximately 33\,000 people\, including famous actors\, beer barons\, Revolutionary War soldiers\, and many more! For over 30 years\, the 28 acre property has been closed to the public and left to fall into near-total ruin. In March 2022\, the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery (FMVC) took control of the blighted property and began remediation. Earlier this year\, the courts approved the sale of MVC to Steelmantown Cemetery Corporation (SCC). Together the FMVC and SCC are working together to not only make MVC an active\, thriving cemetery again\, but also a cultural heritage destination and environmentally preserved green space. \n \nContent Warning & Reminders: \nThe Opera Tour will include discussions of an adult nature that may be distressing to some visitors. \nPlease enter at Mount Vernon Cemetery’s main gate\, located at the corner of Ridge and Lehigh Avenues. The gates will be locked once the tour begins. \nThe tour will be going offroad. Regardless of weather\, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable closed-toed shoes and long pants. The tour is not recommended for those with mobility issues or those that recquire assistance via canes or wheelchairs. \nMVC is in a court-appointed conservatorship. As such\, all visitors will need to sign an access waiver. Paperwork will be provided to you upon arrival. \nAll visitors are required to follow all rules and guidelines set forth by the cemetery’s conservators and by the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery. Failure to adhere to these rules will result in immediate expulsion from the grounds without refund. \nBYOF – Bring your own flashlight (or use the one on your phone)! It will be very dark after sunset. \n \nFAQs \nIs there parking? \nYes\, FREE Parking along Lehigh Avenue across the street from the cemetery. There is NO PARKING inside MVC. We’re also accessible via public transportation and a short walk from the East Falls Regional Rail Station. \n \nCan I come and explore on my own/look for my family? \nNO. Sorry\, but No. We move through the property as a group. Anyone who goes off on their own is in violation of their access waiver and will be ejected from the property without refund. \n \nIs MVC handicap accessible? \nWe at MVC are all about accessibility and inclusivity. Unfortunately however\, the grounds are simply too overgrown and rough to accommodate wheelchairs\, strollers\, etc. We look forward to remedying that in the near future. \n \nAre there bathrooms? \nYes\, there is a porta-potty on the property. \n \n \nIf you haven’t been to the cemetery before\, check out some gorgeous pictures of the space including pictures from the Twilight Tour in May\, where Opera on Tap Philly sang a set.
