DESCRIPTION:Raised beds and raised awareness! Volunteer to clean up the West Oak Lane Library garden and do some early Spring planting.\n\n\n \n \nEarth Day is Everyday!\n \nVolunteer to prepare the West Oak Lane Library garden for the 2026 growing season. \n \nUrban gardens provide a wide range of benefits for the people who tend them and the communities they nourish. These productive green spaces support climate resiliency\, a healthier environment\, and health & wellness. Urban gardens like the one at the West Oak Lane Library are an integral part of a healthy neighborhood providing an avenue for food sovereignty. \n\n\n\nAll ages are invited to help prepare the West Oak Lane Library garden for the 2026 growing season!\n \nEarly Spring is an ideal time to prepare the garden for a season of successful growing. Volunteers will help refresh the garden at the West Oak Lane Library by building new garden beds\, removing weeds\, replenish soil nutrients\, loosen the soil and more! \nImproving soil health by increasing its organic matter (by introducing compost or adopting no-till methods) is critical. The United States is losing soil 10xs faster than it is replenished. Philadelphia has lost much of the organic matter\, minerals\, sand and clay that make up natural soil due to hundreds of years of urban development. Beneath our feet is lots of “rubble\, debris and the history of the city”. \n \nThrough this volunteer project\, we will all act as environmental and community stewards\, tending to the soil that nourishes the natural world and our place in it. \n\n\n\nRefreshments provided. \n \nBYOB…water bottle that is!\nIn being good stewards of our planet\, we will not be providing individual plastic water bottles\, although water will be available. \nIf you don’t have water bottles\, we will have Black Girls With Green Thumbs water bottles available for sale.

SUMMARY:Greening the Urban Landscape
DESCRIPTION:April 2026 Meeting of the Joseph Priestley Society\n\n\nNumerous recent studies in the U.S. and abroad have focused on the benefits of beautiful\, natural surroundings to health and happiness. Cities and urbanites are paying increasing attention to the impact of their connection to the outdoors. How has access to green space in urban areas in the Philadelphia region evolved over time? What has the relationship between the city and the natural environment been in contrast to today? And how have these shaped our understanding of what makes a healthy urban life? \nTim Bennett gives us insights on Bennett Compost’s efforts to make composting easy and accessible for all Philadelphians\, and Peggy Prevoznik Heins shares the work that Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids is doing to realize its vision for a school garden in every pre-K through middle school in Delaware. \n\n\nAbout the Speakers\nTim Bennett graduated from the Fox School of Business at Temple University in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He founded Bennett Compost with $100 and a desire to make composting easier for Philadelphians. Today\, Bennett Compost operates the largest curbside composting program in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The company serves more than 6\,000 households and 100 businesses every week\, employs 25 people\, and keeps over 4 million tons of food waste out of landfills every year. \nPeggy Prevoznik Heins joined the Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids (HFHK) team in 2024 eager to support HFHK’s vision for a school garden in every pre-K through middle school in Delaware. As chief growth strategist\, she helps articulate the organization’s strategic direction\, map and monitor the accompanying growth plan\, and manage internal operations for its growing team. An educator and community organizer at heart\, Peggy is the founder and former CEO of Serviam Girls Academy\, a math and science teacher\, and former director of parish social ministry at Catholic Charities\, among many other roles. \n\n\nAbout the Series\nThe Joseph Priestley Society (JPS) promotes a deeper understanding of science\, technology\, and industry\, with an emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship. Speakers are leaders from a wide variety of large and small chemical companies and the financial\, consulting\, and academic communities. \nFor more information about this event\, please contact jps@sciencehistory.org. \n\n\n \nImage: “First Aid to Trees Transplanted!” Advertisement for Dowax\, 1937

SUMMARY:Celebrate Earth Day by Learning about the Importance of Native Plants
DESCRIPTION:Curious about native plants? This “talk and walk” is a great opportunity to learn about the importance of native plants and what we do.\n\n\nEvery day\, more and more people are hearing about and gaining an interest in native plants. We are here to help both new and seasoned gardeners with their garden needs and provide the highest quality native plants to them\, as well as educating about the ecological value these plants provide. We understand there is a lot of information out there\, and getting started can be daunting. So\, what better day than Earth Day to celebrate native plants and talk about why they are important and why they make wonderful additions to your gardens and landscapes. \nThis talk is geared towards “beginners” but everyone could learn something new! Our horticulturalist\, Brandon\, will walk around the nursery display gardens with you to talk about the value\, cultivation\, and nuances of native plants. Learn what actually classifies plants as “native”\, why birds and butterflies need native plants\, why biodiversity is important\, what threats do native plants face\, and how to get started planting native plants in your own gardens and landscapes. This will be an informal\, open discussion based talk\, so please bring your questions and feel free to actively engage. \nThis talk is mostly geared for adults and interested teens\, but you are welcome to bring your children. We will be mostly walking around and stopping at various areas of the nursery\, but we can go at a pace comfortable for the group. Expect the talk to last between 60 and 90 minutes. \nThis event is rain or shine\, so bring an umbrella and wear proper shoes for the weather. In the event of extreme or dangerous weather\, we will cancel and postpone the event. \nThis event is FREE to attend but we ask you register so we have an idea of how many people will be attending. Please register each person in your group.

SUMMARY:Design A Doodad: Travel Game Zine
DESCRIPTION:BARRIO TELEVISION (work in progress) by Christina DiPasquale\n(USA\, 2026\, TBD) \nBARRIO TELEVISION uncovers the story of Puerto Rican activists who produced the first bilingual Latino television series to air nationwide called “Realidades.” After tracing U.S. complicity in the 1973 coup in Chile\, “Realidades” received backlash and the Nixon administration moved to cut public-media funding\, knocking the show off the air. Undeterred\, the creators mounted a comeback—training media makers in Philadelphia\, organizing a media coalition\, and sparking a fight for media power that continues to this day. \nChristina DiPasquale is a Colombian-American storyteller based in Philadelphia dedicated to advancing participatory media practices rooted in collective memory and movement-building.
