SUMMARY:NATURAL EMOTIONS - A Carlos A. Gil Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Da Vinci Art Alliance is proud to present “NATURAL EMOTIONS\,” an exhibition of dimensional collage by Carlos Gil.\n\n\nJoin us at the Da Vinci Art Alliance on Sunday\, March 2nd at 3 pm for a look into the creative mind of Carlos Gil as they give a talk surrounding their new exhibition. \nSince photography’s inception\, the image-making technology has been associated with reality. Yet it is within these assumptions of truth that we are most likely to fall into illusion. Da Vinci Art Alliance is proud to present “NATURAL EMOTIONS\,” an exhibition of dimensional collage by Carlos Gil. \nThe latest evolution of Gil’s multi-decade practice\, this exhibition utilizes collage and photography to deconstruct narratives we infer from photography and the fictions we tell ourselves about our relationship with the natural world. \n \nBorn in Caracas\, Venezuela\, Carlos studied at the “Cristobal Rojas” School of Arts from 1956-60\, and has participated in residencies and studies in Amsterdam\, Holland\, Belgrade\, Yugoslavia\, Zaragoza and Spain\, as well as taking photography courses at the Photographic Society of Aragon. Gil has lived and worked in Philadelphia since 1994\, and his work has been shown both locally and internationally over the course of his decades-long career. Gil alters what seems-to-be by way of mutations\, formation and deformation\, trying to dispel the illusion of reality created by the camera. With this in mind\, he simultaneously captures the beauty of the natural environment\, and the contours threatened by climate change and rampant man-made destruction.

SUMMARY:Getting Real About Net Zero
DESCRIPTION:What does ‘net zero’ mean? Explore pledges\, energy equity\, fossil fuel phaseouts\, renewables\, and the path to a Paris-aligned future.\n\n\nBoxed lunches will be available to go following the talk!\n\n\nAt COP21 in 2015\, the world coalesced around what has come to be known as the Paris Agreement\, which aims to limit global warming to well below 2C and pursue efforts towards 1.5C. In 2018\, the IPCC published their special report on 1.5C\, making it clear that a key milestone of achieving this aim is getting to “net zero”. By 2019\, national pledges had started to come in. Starting with the UK\, roughly 90 % of the planet is covered by a net zero pledge of one kind or another. \nBut what does net zero mean\, exactly? Net zero CO2 emissions\, or all greenhouse gases? Absolutely zero carbon (fossil or otherwise in the energy system)? Is nuclear permissible\, or should we rely exclusively upon wind\, water\, and solar power? Once the net zero pledge had been made\, the question arose: “Who should pay”? How long have we understood climate change’s anthropogenic and dangerous nature? What\, if anything\, does this mean about culpability? \nRecent publications by\, among others\, the IEA propose that fossil fuel use should imminently peak\, and no further investment should follow–but how realistic is this\, how can we reconcile this idea with that of addressing energy poverty\, and to what extent is an apparent consensus on “phasing down” coal and phasing out fossil fuels compatible with broader questions of national sovereignty? Suppose we do start focusing on deploying renewable energy. How does intermittency impact the quantum of capacity required to replace or displace conventional thermal power generation? To what extent will EVs reduce oil demand? In all scenarios compatible with a Paris-aligned outcome\, the deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies emerges as being indispensable–but this technology has consistently failed to overcome barriers to commercialization; how might this barrier be surmounted? \nSpeaker\nNiall Mac Dowell is a professor of energy systems engineering at Imperial College London. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of both the IChemE and the Royal Society of Chemistry. His research is focused on understanding the transition to a low-carbon economy\, and he has published more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers\, technical reports\, and books in this context. \nMac Dowell has more than a decade’s experience as a consultant to the public and private sectors. He has worked with a range of private sector organizations spanning the energy industry and financial sector and recently completed a two-year secondment to the UK Government Department BEIS (now DESNZ)\, where he acted as an expert policy advisor on CCUS and GGR. \nMac Dowell has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of TotalEnergies\, the Norwegian CCS Research Centre (NCCS)\, and Joule. He was a member of the US National Petroleum Council (NPC) CCUS Roadmap Team\, as well as the technical working group of the Zero Emissions Platform (ZEP)\, the Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA)\, and acts as a science advisor to a number of venture capital\, private equity funds\, and global banks. \nA multi-award-winning scientist\, Mac Dowell was awarded the Qatar Petroleum medal for his research in 2010 and the IChemE’s Nicklin and Junior Moulton medals for his work on low carbon energy in 2015 and 2021\, respectively. \n \nModerator\nJennifer Wilcox is Presidential Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering and Energy Policy at the University of Pennsylvania\, with a home at the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy and the School of Engineering and Applied Science. At Penn\, she oversees the Clean Energy Conversions Lab. \nWilcox is also a senior fellow at the World Resources Institute\, where she leverages her expertise to help accelerate policy support and investments in research\, development\, and deployment of industrial decarbonization and carbon removal solutions in order to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. \nMost recently\, Wilcox served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management at the Department of Energy. Before coming to Penn\, she was the James H. Manning Chaired Professor of Chemical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. \nWilcox’s research takes aim at the nexus of energy and the environment\, developing both mitigation and adaptation strategies to minimize negative climate impacts associated with society’s dependence on fossil fuels. This work carefully examines the role of carbon management and opportunities therein that could assist in preventing 2° C warming by 2100. Carbon management includes a mix of technologies spanning from the direct removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to its capture from industrial\, utility-scale exhaust streams\, followed by utilization or reliable storage of carbon dioxide on a timescale and magnitude that will have a positive impact on our current climate change crisis. \nFunding for her research is primarily sourced through the National Science Foundation\, Department of Energy and the private sector. She has served on a number of committees including the National Academy of Sciences and the American Physical Society to assess carbon capture methods and impacts on climate. She is currently a member of the Energy & Environmental Science Journal Editorial Board. She is the author of the first textbook on carbon capture and\, most recently\, the CDR Primer. In 2023\, she was named one of the TIME 100 Climate. \nHaving grown up in rural Maine\, Wilcox has a profound respect and appreciation of nature\, which permeates her work as she focuses on minimizing negative impacts of humankind on our natural environment. \n\n\nWe look forward to welcoming guests to the Kleinman Center’s Energy Forum. In accordance with the University of Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 guidelines\, masks are optional for all visitors. Boxed lunches will be available to go following the event!

SUMMARY:Weitzman Fine Art Lecture Series: BlackMass Publishing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an artist lecture and presentation with BlackMass\, a publishing collective founded by Yusuf Hassan.\n\n\nThe Weitzman Department of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania and the Institute of Contemporary Art are pleased to present an artist lecture and presentation with BlackMass\, a publishing collective founded by Yusuf Hassan\, which engages with printed matter as a means of Black artistic\, emotional and cultural expression. \nThis free public lecture is part of a series that gathers distinguished artists\, activists\, writers\, and disruptors whose work engages with the social and cultural themes of our time. This season of lectures presents a selection of artists whose work is connected to or featured in ICA’s current exhibitions. \n\nCaptioning will be available for this program via Zoom. \nICA is committed to creating a welcoming environment for all visitors. For more notes on accessibility including accessible parking nearby visit our Accessibility landing page. If you require any accessibility accommodations or have any questions about the program\, please contact Brittany Clottey (bclottey@ica.upenn.edu). \n \nAbout the collective\nFounded by Yusuf Hassan in 2019\, BlackMass Publishing is a New York-based collective and independent press. At once a structure of coherent units and a collection of disjointed parts\, BlackMass invokes an aggregate of Blackness\, of matter in resistance. Combining archival photographs and found print material with poetry and jazz music\, BlackMass grapples with the blurred lines and idiosyncrasies which make up the collective improvisation of African diasporic culture. \nBlackMass have publications included in the permanent book collections of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture\, New York\, RAW Material Company\, Dakar\, Center for Book Arts\, New York\, The Thomas J. Watson Library\, New York\, The Whitney Museum Library\, New York\, The Houghton Library\, Cambridge\, The Langston Hughes Community Library and Cultural Center\, New York\, The New York Public Library\, and The Evergreen State College\, Washington. \n \nAbout the series\nThe Institute of Contemporary Art and the Weitzman Department of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania are pleased to present a series of free public lectures and artist presentations that connect a group of distinguished artists\, writers\, activists\, and disruptors to the Philadelphia public. \nIn their varied approaches and techniques\, these individuals speak to ICA’s ethos of artistic experimentation and practice that engages with the social and cultural themes of our time. As artists\, writers\, and cultural producers\, their artwork and criticism expand across themes of popular culture\, queer life\, kinship & community\, and de/construction through the utilization of sculpture\, performance\, sound\, collage\, installation\, and more. \nIn this lecture series\, we invite you all to engage in conversation with our participants and become a part of an active dialogue that explores the stake of contemporary art in our society and culture. \n \nSupport\nProgramming at ICA is made possible in part by the Emily and Jerry Spiegel Fund to Support Contemporary Culture and Visual Arts and the Lise Spiegel Wilks and Jeffrey Wilks Family Foundation. Public and Student Engagement at ICA is supported by the Bernstein Public Engagement Fund\, Suzanne Weiss Doft & Jacob W. Doft\, Stacey & Robert Goergen Jr.\, Hilarie L. & Mitchell Morgan\, the Nash Family Foundation\, Joline & David Stemerman\, and by Dana McDonald Strong & Mark W. Strong. \nThe Master of Fine Arts program at Penn is focused on the professional development of visual artists. Through workshops\, seminar courses\, international residency opportunities and interactions with curators\, writers and artists\, the program provides an open intellectual framework to foster independent methods of artistic research.

SUMMARY:Black Box Presents: Sunset Seduction
DESCRIPTION:South Philly Autonomous Cinema is pleased to present Sunset Seduction by Charles de Agustin! Screening followed by discussion!\n\n\nBlack Box Presents: Sunset Seduction\nIn Partnership with South Philly Autonomous Cinema\n \n3/6 FREE Doors at 7:30pm\nSouth Philly Autonomous Cinema is pleased to present\, in collaboration with Vox Populi’s Black Box Presents Program\, Sunset Seduction by Charles de Agustin on Thursday\, March 6\, 2025. Doors at 7:30pm\, screening at 8pm\, followed by an extended audience discussion with the artist and organizers. \nSunset Seduction is an evolving project centered on a 45-minute film alongside site-specific contracts and discussions\, starring a liberal philanthropist who yearns for his next fling with radical politics. Made as the Palestine solidarity movement escalated in 2024\, the film unfolds in essayistic fragments considering ideas of freedom\, violence\, and the seductive capture of revolutionary ideology.  \nNonprofit organizations—even those driven by equity\, decolonization\, abolition—are tied to an unsustainable infrastructure that consistently creeps toward establishment liberalism. Sunset Seduction revitalizes the spirit of INCITE’s The Revolution Will Not Be Funded (2007); emphasizes collective grassroots action in the popular imagination\, which may include siphoning and subverting philanthropic resources\, far beyond electoral politics and do-gooder grantmaking; and works toward a “more radical form of complicity” (Moten & Harney). \nWith influence from Faye R. Gleisser’s notion of “risk work” and histories of the contract as artistic intervention\, a scene in the film explains that the artist will work with each exhibiting institution’s staff to enact a “genuine and disruptive act of treason against the socioeconomic interests of the ruling class” in order for the work to be presented\, intending to materialize the particular responsibilities of cultural workers in the global north. \nCharles de Agustin is an artist based in Brooklyn who primarily makes films. Rooted in essay and diary cinema alongside an expanded practice in writing and performance\, his work considers ideas around critique\, access\, intimacy\, and capture\, often in the context of cultural institutions. Solo and group presentations 2021-25 include Alternative Film/Video (Belgrade)\, Ann Arbor Film Festival (Michigan)\, Arts + Literature Laboratory (Madison)\, Gene Siskel Film Center (Chicago)\, Kassel Dokfest (Germany)\, Maysles Documentary Center (New York)\, Revolutions per Minute Festival (Boston)\, Saigon Experimental Film Festival (Vietnam)\, South London Gallery (England)\, Spectacle (Brooklyn)\, XINEMA (Vancouver)\, among others. de Agustin has a BFA from Rutgers University and an MFA from the University of Oxford. He has received grants from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts\, NYSCA\, Brooklyn Arts Council\, and the Elephant Trust. His artistic practice is mutually informed by experiences as an organizer\, educator\, and programmer. \n \nSouth Philly Autonomous Cinema is a collectively-run organization screening leftist\, queer\, and rare films in South Philadelphia. \n \nAbout Black Box Presents \nMade possible by the William Penn Foundation\, Black Box Presents is a yearlong series transforming our Black Box Performance Theater into a platform for 12 community arts organizations\, each curating their own monthly event. This initiative amplifies experimental music\, dance\, film\, and spoken word while ensuring free\, accessible programming that strengthens Philadelphia’s creative networks. \nAbout William Penn FoundationThe William Penn Foundation\, founded in 1945 by Otto and Phoebe Haas\, is committed to expanding access to resources and opportunities that promote a more vital and just city and region for all.
